Can you convert a Volkswagen Multivan into a camper?
Yes, but “convert” can mean anything from adding removable sleeping equipment to fitting a more extensively equipped camper interior. The Multivan’s modular seating makes it a useful base for exploring the lighter, reversible end of that range: Volkswagen says the rear five seats can move or be removed, and that the second row can face rearwards in the described configuration. That lets owners adapt the passenger cabin for different journeys rather than assuming every conversion must be permanent. A modular passenger van is not automatically a finished camper. Sleeping platforms, storage and any additional equipment must fit the particular interior and remain within the vehicle’s permitted load. The available sources establish a factory bed accessory and the California’s camper equipment, but do not establish a universal Multivan conversion specification or a cost for a custom build.
What bed fits a VW T7 Multivan?
Volkswagen Belgium’s accessory shop lists a “Comfort bed VW T7” that mounts in the original T7 floor rail. This is evidence that a rail-mounted sleeping platform is available for at least the T7 application described by the shop; it is not proof that the bed fits every Multivan configuration. REIMO’s 2024 catalogue also references Multivan setup modules from 2022 and comfort-bed equipment. Treat that catalogue as a lead to investigate, not a blanket fitment confirmation: confirm the specific module and vehicle combination with the supplier. REIMO’s 2024 catalogue.
How much room and payload does a Multivan have?
Volkswagen UK’s figures illustrate why configuration matters. Its technical page lists 469 litres of luggage capacity for the standard model and 1,844 litres with the rear seats removed. For the long-wheelbase model with panoramic glass roof, it lists up to 4,053 litres of total load capacity. These are different stated configurations and measures; they should not be treated as interchangeable estimates of usable camper storage.

The same UK page gives dimensions for a standard Multivan Life 2.0 TDI 150 PS 7-speed DSG: 4,973 mm long, 1,941 mm wide without mirrors and 1,907 mm high, or 1,887 mm with lowered chassis. For that stated specification, Volkswagen lists a gross vehicle weight of 2,850 kg and payload of 717 kg. The page says payload may vary with trim and options, and its figures are accurate as of October 2024. Payload is the allowance for the load carried by the vehicle, not just conversion furniture. Occupants, luggage, water and all installed or carried equipment count toward what the vehicle is carrying. The published 717 kg figure is for the specified standard model, not a finished conversion or a universal Multivan payload. Use the exact vehicle’s documents to establish its applicable limits before planning a build.

Removable bed or factory California?
A removable or rail-mounted bed prioritizes flexibility: it can preserve the Multivan’s passenger-carrying role when the sleeping equipment is removed, subject to the specific product’s fit and the owner’s layout. The factory California is a more integrated camper option. Volkswagen’s MY26 California brochure describes equipment including a pop-up roof and kitchen options; it identifies the California as using the long Multivan platform. What to check before choosing conversion modules
- Identify the vehicle precisely. Confirm model year, wheelbase, trim, roof, seat layout and floor-rail arrangement from the vehicle documents or seller.
- Confirm fitment with the product provider. Ask whether the exact bed or module fits that configuration, including how it interacts with the seats and rails.
- Measure the actual cabin. Do not assume the standard-model dimensions or a different wheelbase’s luggage figures describe the usable space in your van.
- Account for the complete load. Include occupants, furniture, bedding, luggage and any other carried equipment when checking the actual vehicle’s permitted payload.
- Decide how much flexibility you need. A removable sleeping setup and an integrated camper address different priorities; choose according to passenger use and the equipment you want built in.
