Yes. A Kia Niro EV can charge at home using AC charging equipment. For regular charging, Kia recommends a 240-volt Level 2 charger in its 2024 U.S. Niro EV guide. A household outlet can also support slower Level 1 charging if the outlet and circuit are suitable. Exact charging times, connector compatibility and included cables depend on the vehicle’s model year and market.
Which home charger should you use?
The main choice is between Level 1 charging from household electricity and a dedicated Level 2 setup. For the 2024 U.S. Niro EV, Kia recommends Level 2 for regular charging. The estimates below are specific to Kia’s 2024 U.S. guide, not universal figures for every Niro EV.

| Option | What it uses | Charging guidance | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | Household outlet; Kia describes it as 110 V in its 2024 U.S. guide. | Kia estimates up to 57 hours for a full charge in that guide. DOE’s general U.S. estimate is 2–5 miles of range per hour; that is not a Niro-specific rate. | The outlet should be on a dedicated circuit and must not be old, damaged, corroded or cracked. Kia says not to use an extension cord. |
| Level 2 | Dedicated 240 V charging equipment. | Kia recommends Level 2 for the 2024 U.S. Niro EV and estimates approximately 6 hours for a full charge, based on Kia testing with an SAE J1772 charger at 11 kW. DOE’s general U.S. estimate is 10–30 miles of range per hour. | Actual time depends on the vehicle, charger and conditions. Verify the model year, connector and vehicle charging limit. |
The full-charge times are Kia’s stated estimates, not guarantees for every home or Niro EV. DOE’s range-per-hour figures are general guidance for EVs, not Niro-specific results. For U.S. Level 1 and Level 2 charging, DOE identifies SAE J1772 in its connector overview.
What equipment and installation do you need?
Confirm the car’s connector and charging limit
Before buying equipment, check the owner’s manual for the exact model year and market. Connector, maximum AC charging rate and supplied cable can vary. Kia’s 2024 U.S. owner manual says its portable charging cable is sold separately; check what came with your particular vehicle rather than assuming a cable is included.

Plan a Level 2 installation with an electrician
For a U.S.-market Level 2 setup, an SAE J1772 EVSE is a candidate, subject to confirming compatibility with the vehicle. A qualified electrician can assess the home’s electrical capacity, circuit needs and installation route. Some homes may need additional electrical work before Level 2 equipment can be installed.
Ask the electrician or local permitting authority about:

- Whether the home can support the proposed charger and circuit.
- Whether the charger will be plug-in or hardwired, and the outlet or circuit it requires.
- Where the charger and electrical panel are, and whether the wire run requires trenching, other construction or a service upgrade.
- Which permits and inspections the jurisdiction requires.
- Whether the equipment matches the Niro’s model year and intended charging rate.
Follow applicable electrical codes and local requirements; permitting rules vary by jurisdiction. Choose safety-certified equipment, such as equipment tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, and use a certified electrical contractor. For an outdoor installation, the equipment must be rated for outdoor use. DOE’s home charging guidance and charging infrastructure guidance discuss electrical capacity, contractors and equipment.

| Cost component | Published figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Residential Level 2 equipment | $380–$690 | DOE AFDC cites a Rocky Mountain Institute report; the report year is not stated on the AFDC page. |
| Residential Level 2 connector installation | Approximately $1,300 per connector | DOE AFDC cites an NLR and INL report; the report year is not stated on the AFDC page. The estimate excludes labor and permitting. |
Do not add these figures and treat the total as a typical installed price: the installation estimate excludes labor and permitting, and a home may also need electrical upgrades. Actual quotes depend on location, existing wiring, distance from the panel, trenching, permits and site conditions. Ask a qualified electrician and your utility about likely costs before proceeding. DOE’s procurement and installation guidance notes that Level 2 equipment prices vary.

DOE AFDC gives an illustrative general-EV example of $0.03 per mile, using an assumed electricity rate of 10.7 cents per kWh and consumption of 27 kWh per 100 miles. That is not a Kia Niro EV test result. Its example of about $6 to add a full 54 kWh to a 200-mile-range EV uses the same assumed electricity rate.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Your cost will depend on your actual utility rate, any time-of-use plan and the vehicle’s energy use. Some utilities offer time-of-use rates or other incentives; check with yours. DOE’s home charging guidance, accessed October 4, 2026, explains the cost calculation and examples.
Are incentives available for installation?
Do not assume the federal alternative-fuel infrastructure credit is currently available based on the deadline described in DOE AFDC guidance: that guidance tied eligibility to qualifying property placed in service by June 30, 2026, a date that has passed. Residential eligibility was also tied to an eligible census tract. Check current IRS rules and your state, local government and utility for incentives that may apply to your installation. See DOE AFDC’s tax credit guidance, accessed October 4, 2026.
Quick Recap
How to choose between Level 1 and Level 2
- Consider Level 1 if slower charging suits your routine and you have a safe, appropriately rated outlet and circuit.
- Consider Level 2 if you want faster home charging and can accommodate the equipment and installation work.
- Check your driving and parking pattern. The right setup depends on how much you drive and how long the vehicle is parked at home.
- Compare the full project cost. Level 2 may involve equipment, installation, permits or electrical upgrades, not just the charger itself.
- Confirm compatibility before purchase. Use the vehicle’s model-year manual and verify the connector and charging limit.
