Short answer: the Ripsaw is a real military and robotic vehicle family, but current official information does not establish a normal consumer purchase or road-registration route. Textron Systems and Howe & Howe present the RIPSAW M5, M3, A3 and M1 as defense platforms, prototypes and mission systems—not showroom vehicles with published prices, titles or street-use approvals.
Government procurement and Army testing prove that RIPSAW vehicles exist and are being developed or sold to institutional customers. They do not, by themselves, show that a private buyer can title one and drive it on public roads.

Can you buy a Ripsaw tank?
The public official pages reviewed do not provide a consumer price, checkout process, private-sale inventory, civilian trim, vehicle title, road-homologation certificate or registration instructions. They describe military and government programs instead.
The U.S. Army has reported demonstrations at Aberdeen Proving Ground and a proposed government contract. Textron has also reported delivering two M3 prototypes to the Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicle program. On December 2, 2025, Howe & Howe and Textron announced Sweden as the first European customer for a RIPSAW M3. That announcement confirms institutional procurement; it is not evidence of an ordinary private sale.

Is the Ripsaw street legal?
No current source establishes that any listed RIPSAW variant is approved for general public-road use. Street legality normally requires a jurisdiction-specific title and registration path, compliance with equipment and safety rules, and insurance that an authority and insurer will accept. The official RIPSAW material reviewed supplies none of those documents.

A privately held or modified vehicle might raise different questions from a factory-delivered defense platform, but that possibility cannot be treated as proof of legality. Before assuming a purchase is usable on the road, obtain written confirmation for the exact variant from Howe & Howe or Textron Systems and from the motor-vehicle authority in the relevant jurisdiction.

RIPSAW models compared
The family members are not interchangeable. Their published figures show different sizes, payloads, speeds and operating concepts.
| Model | Published role or configuration | Weight or GVWR | Dimensions | Payload | Published speed and terrain figures |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RIPSAW M5 | Fifth-generation robotic vehicle | 21,000 lb | 234 × 105 in; 60-in deck height | 8,000 lb | Over 25 mph |
| RIPSAW M3 | Uncrewed robotic ground vehicle | 14,000 lb | 206 × 80 in; 48-in deck height | 5,000 lb | Over 30 mph; the 2025 release cites over 180 miles of range for operationally relevant off-road environments |
| RIPSAW A3 | Robotic platform with amphibious capability | 14,500 lb | 206 × 80 in; 48-in deck height | 2,500 lb | Over 30 mph on land; over 5 mph in water |
| RIPSAW M1 | Compact wheeled, uncrewed vehicle for reconnaissance, logistics and force protection | 6,300-lb GVWR; 4,300-lb curb weight | 10.5 × 5 × 4 ft; 18-in ground clearance | 2,000 lb | Up to 53 mph in high range; 20 mph in low range; 48-in fording depth; 30 miles of silent all-electric range |
These are manufacturer-published figures, and they are not a promise of road performance, registration eligibility or civilian availability. The M1’s 53-mph figure is a high-range specification, while its silent-electric figure is a 30-mile operating capability; neither should be read as a conventional fuel-economy or highway-range rating.

Which Ripsaw model is fastest?
Among the published maximum figures, the M1 is fastest at up to 53 mph in high range. The larger M3 and A3 are listed at over 30 mph, and the M5 at over 25 mph. Those numbers come from different vehicle configurations and mission requirements, so they are not a consumer performance comparison or a guarantee of sustained speed on pavement.

What makes the M3 different?
The M3 is the larger tracked robotic vehicle associated with Army testing and the 2025 Swedish customer announcement. Howe & Howe and Textron describe a hybrid-electric powertrain, high ground clearance and composite rubber tracks, with over 180 miles of range in operationally relevant off-road environments.

How the Ripsaw became a military program
Geoff Howe’s official biography says the Howe brothers first gained attention in 2001 by developing what they described as the world’s fastest tank. The U.S. Army has reported that Mike and Geoff Howe developed the vehicle in a small Maine production garage before demonstrating it at Aberdeen Proving Ground and pursuing military contracts.
That history explains why videos and headlines often call the Ripsaw a “tank.” The current products are more precisely described as robotic ground vehicles, with variants designed for remote operation and mission payloads rather than a conventional crewed battle tank.
What a prospective civilian buyer should verify
- Identify the exact variant. “Ripsaw” covers multiple vehicles, and the M1, M3, A3 and M5 have materially different dimensions, weights and operating systems.
- Request a written sales and ownership path. Ask the manufacturer whether the vehicle is available to a private buyer, what documentation accompanies it and whether it is a prototype, production unit or government-controlled configuration.
- Check the motor-vehicle authority first. Ask whether that specific vehicle can receive a title, registration and road-use approval where you live.
- Confirm insurance and transport requirements. Even if an authority permits limited movement, weight, width, track design, lighting, braking and transport rules may prevent ordinary road use.
- Do not substitute another tracked vehicle. A model, toy, unrelated surplus vehicle or ordinary military-surplus listing is not a RIPSAW and does not answer the availability or legality question.
Is the Ripsaw a real Army vehicle or a movie prop?
It is real. The Army has documented RIPSAW demonstrations and the Army’s Robotic Combat Vehicle program has received M3 prototypes from Textron. Sweden’s announced M3 purchase is additional evidence of government or institutional use. None of those facts changes the absence of a published civilian road-registration pathway.
The practical verdict
The Ripsaw is a genuine Howe & Howe/Textron defense and robotic-vehicle family, not merely a film prop. However, the current official evidence does not support telling readers that they can walk into a dealership, buy one at a published price and legally drive it on public roads. Treat any private-sale claim as unverified until the seller, manufacturer and local authority document the exact vehicle’s ownership and registration status.
