Yes. A three-cylinder engine can power an all-wheel-drive hot hatch, a front-drive performance hatchback or a plug-in hybrid sports car. The examples verified here make the point without treating cylinder count as a performance rating: displacement, turbocharging, electric assistance and drivetrain layout matter too.
The requested “10 cars” framing is not supported by the available manufacturer specifications. Rather than pad the list with unverified models, this article covers four distinct model lines and labels the market and model-year context for each figure.

These manufacturer specifications demonstrate a range of performance-oriented uses for three-cylinder engines. They are not independent test results, and the figures are not all directly comparable: some are engine-only ratings, while the BMW i8 also has a separate combined hybrid-system rating.

GR Corolla: a turbo three in a U.S. hot hatch
Toyota’s 2025 U.S. GR Corolla page identifies the G16E-GTS as a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder and rates it at 300 hp and 295 lb-ft. That pairing puts a small-displacement engine in an all-wheel-drive performance hatchback. The figures describe Toyota’s U.S. model, not every market or model year.

Toyota has also published a different GR Corolla figure: 304 PS and 370 Nm as North American development target specifications. Those are targets in an older global announcement, not the same specification as the 2025 U.S. model page. Toyota Motor Corporation
GR Yaris: another three-cylinder, another market specification
Toyota’s updated Japanese-market GR Yaris specification lists a 1.618-liter turbocharged inline three-cylinder rated at 304 PS and 400 Nm. It pairs the engine with GR-FOUR sports four-wheel drive and offers a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. These are Japan-market, version-specific specifications; they should not be silently substituted for the GR Corolla’s U.S. ratings.

What the Fiesta ST adds
Ford’s European Fiesta ST shows a different format: a front-drive hot hatch using a 1.5-liter EcoBoost inline three-cylinder turbo. Ford’s 2018 technical sheet gives 200 PS and 290 Nm; the 2021 sheet gives 200 PS and 320 Nm. Ford’s launch announcement described cylinder deactivation alongside Normal, Sport and Track driving modes. That makes the Fiesta ST an example not only of a three-cylinder hot hatch, but of a manufacturer applying engine-management and drive-mode features to that layout. Why the BMW i8 is a different kind of example
The BMW i8 is not simply a sports car powered by a three-cylinder engine. It is a plug-in hybrid: a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol engine drives the rear wheels, while an electric motor drives the front axle. BMW called it the company’s first production model with a three-cylinder petrol engine in its launch-era materials.

For the original U.S. launch, BMW listed 231 hp for the combustion engine. Its 2019 update listed 228 hp for that engine and 369 hp as combined system output for the Coupe and Roadster. These examples use different markets, model years and measurement units. PS and hp are not identical units, and torque figures in Nm and lb-ft should not be treated as if they were. More importantly, the BMW’s combined system output is not comparable to an engine-only rating. For a fair comparison, keep the following distinctions attached to each number:

Yes: these four model lines show three-cylinder engines serving markedly different enthusiast-oriented roles, from turbocharged all-wheel-drive hatches to a front-drive hot hatch and a plug-in hybrid sports car. The headline promises ten cars, but only four distinct model lines are substantiated by the manufacturer specifications available here. The examples establish the narrower point that cylinder count alone does not define a car’s performance character or appeal.
