The Kia Tasman has a credible shot at competing with established pickups—but the strongest case is in markets where Kia sells it, especially Australia, not a proven head-to-head against the U.S.-market Toyota Tacoma. Kia Australia lists the Tasman with up to 1,000 kg of payload and 3,500 kg of braked towing capacity, making it relevant to work and towing buyers. But those are manufacturer figures, not independent comparative results, and the available evidence does not show that the Tasman has beaten Hilux, Ranger or Tacoma.
What “Tacoma hunting” means—and what it doesn’t
The title’s Tacoma comparison needs a geographic qualification. Toyota sells the Tacoma in the United States, while Kia’s Tasman is positioned for other regional markets, including Australia. An Edmunds first-drive report said Kia did not sell the Tasman in the U.S. and had no plans to bring it there at that time; that is a dated statement, not confirmation of Kia’s current U.S. plans. The available evidence does not establish the Tasman as a current U.S. showroom rival to the Tacoma.
For Australian buyers, the more relevant established competitors are the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, the local comparison set identified in RACV’s 2025 Tasman preview. That makes “taking on the big boys” a fair description of the Tasman’s ambition, but not proof of a measured win over any rival.
Why the Tasman has a credible case
Work and towing figures that matter
Kia Australia specifies a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel producing 154 kW and 440 Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic. The Australian-market figures include up to 1,000 kg payload, 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, 350 kg tow-ball mass, a 6,200 kg gross combination mass (GCM) and a 3,250 kg gross vehicle mass (GVM). These are Kia’s regional specifications, not results from an independent comparison test. Confirm the figures for the exact grade and configuration before buying, particularly when planning a loaded tow vehicle and trailer.

Kia Australia also lists an SAE tub capacity of 1,336 litres and an integrated trailer brake controller. Equipment varies by grade: for example, Kia lists a tub liner on SX+. Check the local specification for the trim you are considering rather than assuming every Tasman includes the same equipment. The specifications and grade details are on Kia Australia’s Tasman features page.
A first pickup gives Kia a new way into the market
Kia introduced the Tasman as its first pickup. Its October 2024 corporate announcement described a planned 2025 launch beginning in Korea, followed by Australia, Africa and the Middle East. That history helps explain why the vehicle is being discussed as a challenger, but a launch plan does not establish current availability in every country. Check Kia’s local listings and dealer network for present availability.

Kia’s president and CEO, Ho Sung Song, said at launch that the pickup was created to “transform the market” and address demand for lifestyle-oriented trucks. That is the company’s positioning, not evidence of market share or superiority. Kia’s October 2024 launch announcement provides the original context.
How much does the Kia Tasman cost?
Prices depend on market, model year, body and trim. Kia New Zealand’s MY26 range page lists the double-cab wellside TX 2WD from NZ$47,690 and the X-Pro 4WD at NZ$79,690, both plus on-road costs. Those are New Zealand-dollar examples for the specified MY26 vehicles—not Australian prices or a global price range. The page also lists cab-chassis variants. See Kia New Zealand’s MY26 Tasman range for the local lineup.

What buyers should compare before calling it a winner
A serious comparison is between vehicles available in the same market and in configurations a buyer could actually purchase. Match the Tasman to the relevant Hilux or Ranger—and, in the U.S., to vehicles actually sold there—on the details that affect ownership and use:
- Price and configuration: compare local-currency prices for equivalent cab and body styles, grades and drivetrains, including on-road costs where applicable.
- Payload and towing: check the exact vehicle’s payload, braked towing limit, tow-ball limit, GVM and GCM. A headline towing figure alone does not establish what a loaded vehicle can legally or practically tow.
- Equipment and safety: compare off-road hardware and safety features at the specific grade, not just the model name.
- Ownership support: weigh local dealer coverage, warranty terms and service costs. Kia Australia promotes prepaid servicing options in 3-, 5- and 7-year periods; current terms should be confirmed with Kia or a local dealer.
- Independent evidence: look for like-for-like road tests and reliability evidence in the market where you will own the vehicle. The cited Tasman specifications do not establish comparative performance, reliability or sales success.
Verdict: a plausible challenger, not a proven champion
The Tasman’s Australian specifications give Kia a credible starting point: useful published payload and towing limits, a diesel powertrain, and a sizable tub. Its case against the pickup establishment will ultimately depend on how the exact local version performs, how it is equipped and priced, and whether Kia’s dealer and ownership support meet buyers’ needs. The evidence supports calling it a serious new contender in markets where it is sold—not claiming it has already beaten the Hilux, Ranger or Tacoma.
