Can Rivian Owners Use Tesla Superchargers? Adapters, Model Years and the Free-Adapter Question

Rivian owners can use compatible Tesla Superchargers in North America. CCS-equipped 2022–2025 vehicles need a NACS DC adapter; Rivian has not confirmed current eligibility for the free-adapter announcement.

Yes—Rivian owners can use compatible Tesla Superchargers in North America, but the connector depends on the vehicle model year. Model-year 2022–2025 R1T and R1S vehicles have CCS ports and need a compatible NACS DC adapter. Model-year 2026 and later Rivians have a built-in NACS port and do not need that adapter for NACS chargers.

The “free adapter” part needs qualification: Rivian announced in 2024 that existing owners would receive adapters, but its current public pages do not establish who can still claim one or whether distribution remains open. Rivian currently lists an approved replacement adapter for $200.

Which Rivians can use Tesla Superchargers?

Rivian’s current charging guidance says its vehicles can charge at Tesla Superchargers in North America. Compatibility depends on the vehicle’s charge port and the specific charging site.

Rivian model year Charge port What is needed for a compatible Tesla Supercharger
2022–2025 R1T and R1S CCS1 A compatible NACS DC adapter
2026 and later NACS No NACS-to-CCS adapter for NACS charging

Do not assume every Supercharger stall is available to every Rivian. Check Rivian’s live charging map or your vehicle’s or app’s route planning for compatibility and availability at the site you intend to use. Rivian’s current guidance describes access to more than 21,000 Tesla Supercharger sites in North America, but that network-wide count is not a guarantee for a particular route, site or stall.

What adapter do 2022–2025 Rivians need?

A 2022–2025 R1T or R1S with a CCS1 port needs a compatible NACS DC adapter to connect to a compatible Tesla Supercharger. Rivian’s Gear Shop listing describes its adapter as a Rivian-approved replacement part and lists it for those model years. The listing describes access to more than 20,000 Superchargers across the US and Canada; that is a separate, page-specific count from the figure in Rivian’s charging guidance.

This adapter is for DC fast charging only. Rivian says not to use it with an AC charger. It is also different from a CCS adapter that a NACS-port vehicle might use to charge at a CCS fast charger.

Use an approved, compatible adapter

Rivian warns against unauthorized or incompatible adapters. Its NACS DC adapter guide says damage caused by an unauthorized or incompatible adapter is not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Confirm the adapter is designed for the vehicle’s port and the charger type; do not treat an unverified third-party product as Rivian-approved.

Is the Rivian adapter still free?

Rivian’s Q1 2024 shareholder letter stated: “In addition to RAN, existing owners will receive NACS DC adapters providing them access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers.” That is a historical announcement, not confirmation of current eligibility or an open claim process. The letter does not establish whether a later owner qualifies, whether an adapter was already sent, or whether distribution is still active.

If you believe an adapter was promised to you or need to know whether one is available for your vehicle, check your Rivian account or contact Rivian support for an individual answer.

How to check a Supercharger before you go

  1. Open Rivian’s current charging map or use your vehicle’s or app’s route planning.
  2. Check that the specific Tesla Supercharger site is shown as compatible and available for your vehicle.
  3. For a 2022–2025 CCS1 vehicle, bring a compatible NACS DC adapter. A 2026-or-later NACS-port vehicle does not need that adapter for NACS charging.
  4. Review the current charging and payment details shown in Rivian’s guidance or in your vehicle or app before relying on a particular workflow.

In its Q1 2024 shareholder letter, Rivian said owners could plug in and charge with automatic billing without opening an app, and that compatible Superchargers would show live availability, pricing and charging speeds in Rivian’s app and in-vehicle route planning. Those statements describe Rivian’s 2024 guidance; check current owner information rather than assuming the same payment or display process applies today.
