Newlight Marine Technologies has demonstrated a retrofit that adds hydrogen to an existing marine diesel engine and uses an AI-guided controller to adjust injection as operating conditions change. The diesel engine remains in service; this is a hydrogen-diesel hybrid, not a hydrogen-only ship. In a September 2026 announcement, project partner lomarlabs said the system cut fuel use and emissions on one commercial voyage, but those results have not been publicly established across multiple vessels or independently verified.
How does the AI-powered hydrogen upgrade work?
The retrofit feeds hydrogen into the combustion process of an existing diesel engine. A controller adjusts hydrogen injection in real time as engine conditions change. SlashGear reports that the system monitors combustion pressure, exhaust temperature and intake pressure. The aim is to improve combustion while keeping the ship’s diesel engine in service.
That distinction matters: the vessel still uses diesel fuel, and the system supplements rather than replaces the engine. It is therefore a hybrid retrofit, not a hydrogen-powered ship in the usual sense.
What happened on the commercial voyage?
On September 1, 2026, lomarlabs announced that the system had completed an 8,500-nautical-mile (15,700 km) commercial voyage from Singapore to Ghana aboard a 199 m (650 ft), 57,038-DWT Lomar Shipping bulk carrier. Lomarlabs reported the following results for that voyage:

- Horizon puts renewable energy technology into the hands of our future scientists
- Solar Hydrogen Education Kit generates clean energy using the sun
- Renewable hydrogen is created using only solar energy and water
- Combining cutting-edge science, education and fun for all!
- Includes fuel cell, small electric motor, propeller blade, experiment manual and assembly guide
| Reported measure | Result announced by lomarlabs |
|---|---|
| Fuel consumption | 24% reduction |
| Carbon dioxide emissions | 28% reduction |
| Carbon monoxide emissions | 22% reduction |
These are company-announced figures from a single voyage. The public announcements do not establish an independent evaluation of the measurements, publish a full test protocol, or show replicated results on several ships. The voyage is evidence of a commercial demonstration, not proof that other vessels will achieve the same reductions.
Can the retrofit be installed without taking a ship out of service?
Lomarlabs says installation can take one to two weeks and can be completed while a vessel is in the water, without dry-docking. That is the partner’s stated deployment approach; the announcements do not provide a vessel-by-vessel installation record or establish that the same schedule applies to every ship.

Before the voyage, a November 2025 factory acceptance test (FAT) announcement said testing covered safety layers, control and monitoring logic, electrical integration, engine behavior, emergency stops, and fire and leak detection. Lomarlabs also described the package as designed to the IGF Code and validated to RINA class rules. Factory testing and class-related validation address the system’s design and functions; they are not the same as independent verification of the voyage’s fuel or emissions results.
What do the projected savings and payback mean?
Lomarlabs projected annual savings of $500,000 and a payback period of under 18 months for similar vessels. These are projections, not guaranteed returns or results measured across a fleet. The announcements do not provide enough detail to assess the assumptions behind those estimates, such as a particular vessel’s operating profile, fuel costs, retrofit price or hydrogen supply costs.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
For an operator assessing the proposal, the voyage figures are a reason to investigate compatibility and economics for a specific vessel—not a substitute for a vessel-specific assessment. Relevant questions include engine compatibility, hydrogen supply and storage, installation timing, safety and class requirements, operating route, capital cost, and the emissions profile the operator needs to address.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the voyage demonstrate—and what does it not?
The reported voyage shows that a hydrogen-injection retrofit was used on a commercial bulk carrier over a substantial route. It does not establish fleet-wide savings, independent confirmation of the emissions measurements, or that every ship can be retrofitted on the same schedule.

- 1. Electrical part: motor with wind shoulder, ammeter, voltmeter.
- 2. Ammonia fuel cell.Hydrogen's electrons travel from the anode to the cathode through an external circuit, generating an electric current. At the cathode, the electrons, protons, and oxygen in the air combine to produce water, which is the main by-product of the fuel cell.
- 3. PEM (proton exchange) water electrolyzer.Gaseous hydrogen is sent to the anode of the membrane, and air is sent to the cathode. The hydrogen atoms are stripped of electrons on the anode side, and the positively charged protons pass through the membrane to reach the cathode. In order for this reaction to occur, a platinum catalyst must be used.
- 4. The two proton exchange membrane electrodes in the organic base and the presenter are 35mm*35mm. Experimental steps. Add deionized water to the water level in the PEM water electrolyzer. The amount of water should not be too much to prevent water from flowing into the battery. After adding water, connect the hydrogen gas outlet on the water electrolyzer to the hydrogen gas inlet on the electrical energy with a gas pipe.
- 5.Then connect the 6V-12V DC power supply to the positive and negative wiring of the water electrolyzer part, and connect the transportation line of the electrical part to the electric energy after 2-3 minutes, the small motor starts to work, and the current is displayed on the current and voltmeter. Positive value.
Stylianos Papageorgiou, Managing Director of lomarlabs, said: “This voyage has demonstrated that hydrogen can safely be managed and used onboard, to enhance the combustion of HFO and reduce emissions. It therefore provides a new pathway for sustained compliance within the IMO 2050 framework for existing and aging vessels.” This is Papageorgiou’s assessment of the demonstration, not a finding or endorsement by the IMO or a regulator.
For shipowners, the practical significance is the retrofit approach: it seeks emissions and fuel savings while retaining an existing diesel engine. Whether it makes operational and financial sense for a particular vessel depends on a vessel-specific evaluation and results beyond this one announced voyage.
