Yes, an automatic car can sometimes be converted to a manual, and a manual car may be convertible to an automatic. But neither is a simple gearbox swap: feasibility depends on the exact vehicle, and the work can involve other drivetrain parts, controls and installation changes. Before deciding, get a vehicle-specific parts and labor estimate and compare it with buying a factory-equipped car in suitable condition.
What a transmission conversion involves
A replacement transmission may require related changes. TREMEC says that replacing a factory transmission with one of its transmissions commonly involves modifications to the driveshaft and crossmember, as well as the clutch or bellhousing arrangement. The actual work depends on the vehicle and transmission; that guidance does not establish a universal parts list for every swap. TREMEC’s aftermarket FAQ describes its installation and conversion guidance.
Automatic to manual
A manual setup needs a clutch to connect the engine to the transmission and disconnect them when shifting or stopped. Depending on the vehicle, the conversion may also require compatible clutch and bellhousing parts and changes to other components or controls. Confirm the complete scope for the specific car rather than assuming a kit contains everything needed.
Manual to automatic
The reverse conversion is also vehicle-specific. The sources here do not establish a universal parts list, procedure or off-the-shelf kit for converting a manual car to an automatic. Ask a specialist to identify the transmission and supporting parts that fit the exact vehicle before buying anything.

How to check whether your car is a candidate
Compatibility cannot be determined from “automatic” or “manual” alone. Give a transmission specialist the car’s year, make, model, engine, drivetrain and current transmission configuration, plus your country or state if you need compliance guidance. Ask the specialist to verify parts fitment and availability for that exact combination.
TREMEC says it does not make automatic-to-manual conversion kits, although many of its distributors do. It also says it does not sell transmissions or components directly to the public and directs customers to authorized distributors. That makes specialist distributors one possible sourcing route, not proof that a compatible kit exists for your car. Check TREMEC’s FAQ and confirm fitment with the supplier.

What to ask before authorizing the work
- Which parts are required for this exact vehicle, and which have been verified as compatible and available?
- Does the estimate include related work to the clutch or bellhousing, driveshaft, crossmember and any other systems the installer identifies?
- What parts and labor are included in the written estimate, and what could change the scope?
- What local requirements apply to this vehicle and conversion?
- How will the conversion affect the car’s suitability for your needs, and is keeping this particular car worth the work?
Do not rely on a generic online price or labor estimate: the reviewed primary sources do not establish a universal cost, duration or cost advantage over buying another car. Compare a written, vehicle-specific estimate with the price and condition of a factory-equipped alternative.
Tools and installation safety
For installing its transmissions, TREMEC lists a transmission jack, flywheel wrench, wrenches, spline alignment tool and socket set as minimum tools. This is guidance for TREMEC’s installation context, not a complete universal tool list. A transmission jack may be appropriate for some jobs, but having one does not make the conversion beginner-friendly; the safe equipment and setup depend on the vehicle, workspace and work being performed. See TREMEC’s tool guidance.

Clutch selection matters on a manual conversion. TREMEC warns that an incorrect clutch can affect drivability and the durability of the engine, transmission, driveline and chassis. Have the clutch and related parts selected for the vehicle’s complete configuration, rather than choosing by transmission fit alone. TREMEC explains clutch function and selection considerations.

Do not treat a narrow regulatory source as blanket approval or prohibition for an ordinary owner-performed swap. The U.S. EPA’s Kit Car Policy concerns a specific rebuilt kit-car context: to be considered covered by a previously certified configuration, the vehicle must retain the same transmission configuration along with other listed criteria. The policy says EPA may consider minor variations when an appropriate demonstration shows the altered configuration will meet federal emissions requirements. It does not settle every transmission conversion.

A 1989 NHTSA interpretation addresses a proposed dual-function transmission with automatic and manual shift functions. NHTSA treated that described design as automatic for the federal motor vehicle safety standards at issue and discussed manufacturers’ responsibility to meet applicable requirements. That interpretation is about the described design, not a general approval for an ordinary conversion. Check the rules that apply to your vehicle category and location, and get vehicle-specific professional guidance.

Quick Recap
| Decision factor | Convert the current car | Buy a factory-equipped car |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Use a written estimate for vehicle-specific parts and labor; no universal conversion price is established. | Compare the purchase price and condition of a suitable example against the conversion estimate. |
| Compatibility | Require verified fitment and availability for the exact year, model, engine, drivetrain and transmission configuration. | Check that the car is factory-equipped with the transmission you want and is otherwise suitable. |
| Work scope | Confirm all related changes identified by the installer, not just the transmission itself. | Assess the condition of the car you would buy. |
| Compliance | Check requirements for the vehicle category and location. | Check the requirements that apply to the specific car and its use. |
| Reason to choose | May make sense if keeping this particular car matters enough to justify the verified work. | May be preferable if a suitable factory-equipped vehicle is available and the conversion scope is not worthwhile to you. |
