That was a historical price, not a current offer. The 99 lb (45 kg) kit was designed to turn certain vans into a simple sleeping and cooking space while leaving compatible vehicles’ rear seats in place for travel.
What came in the Campal ForTwo box?
New Atlas’s February 15, 2019 report described a folding camper box with cushions, a gas stove and folding windscreen, a table, bowl, and waste bin. A water container with tap was optional, as were a storage box and a tripod for using the table outside.

The listed optional-item prices are historical, not current quotes. The article did not establish whether any of those accessories are available today.
How the removable setup worked
The 2019 report gave the ForTwo’s weight as 99 lb (45 kg) and said installation took roughly five minutes. It was intended to be removable, rather than a permanent conversion. In compatible vehicles, the rear seats could remain untouched during driving; that does not establish that the kit fits every van or leaves every seating arrangement usable.

Which vehicles was the 2019 ForTwo reported to fit?
New Atlas listed these examples: Citroën Berlingo, Fiat Doblo, Honda Stepwgn, Mercedes Citan, and Volkswagen Caddy and Transporter. It directed readers to Campal for the complete vehicle list. An example in this list is not a guarantee of fit for every year, generation, trim, or interior configuration.
Check the exact year, make, and model with Campal before ordering. The current manufacturer site describes several vehicle-specific models and offers a contact or design-consultation route, rather than establishing that the older ForTwo remains available for every vehicle. Is the $1,400 price still current?
No. The US$1,400 figure was New Atlas’s approximate conversion of the ForTwo’s £1,090 price in February 2019. Campal’s current lineup is broader, and its products are distinct models—not a direct repricing of the original ForTwo.

These prices are the figures on Campal’s model comparison page as accessed on that date; availability, fit, and prices may change. Campal’s Vacation product page lists £2,100 and says the price includes the birch plywood unit, cushions, Primus Tupike stove, and 12V and USB sockets. Those Vacation inclusions apply to that model, not to the 2019 ForTwo.

What to verify before buying a current kit
Because these are vehicle-specific products, compare the details for your exact vehicle and intended use rather than relying on the old ForTwo headline:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and interior fit.
- Sleeping capacity, dimensions, and kit weight.
- Whether seats remain usable and how the unit is secured or removed.
- Which stove, electrical sockets, cushions, storage, and other equipment are included in that model’s price.
- Current price, order status, and any made-to-order details.
Campal’s description of its Estate is specifically for a removable conversion designed for estate cars, MPVs, and SUVs; those details should not be assumed to describe every model. Confirm the current specification and fit directly with the manufacturer before purchase.
