Can a Used Motorcycle Cost Less Than a New Honda Grom—and Do More?

A used motorcycle can be a better-value alternative to a new Honda Grom—but only if its full cost, condition, and road capability make sense for you.

Possibly—but the comparison only works when a specific used bike’s full purchase cost is below the Grom’s real local price. Honda lists the 2026 Grom at $3,899 including destination, before local tax, registration, dealer fees, or accessories. A used standard or middleweight may offer more road capability for less, but its asking price alone cannot prove the deal: condition, title, immediate repairs, and your intended riding matter.

What does a new Grom actually cost?

For the U.S. 2026 model, American Honda lists a $3,599 base MSRP plus a $300 destination charge, for a displayed total MSRP of $3,899. That is a manufacturer price baseline, not an out-the-door quote; taxes, registration, dealer charges, and optional equipment can change what a buyer pays. Check the current local quote before comparing it with a used listing. Honda’s 2026 Grom specifications and pricing.

The Grom is a small, light motorcycle: Honda specifies a 124cc air-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine, five-speed manual transmission, 224-pound curb weight, 30-inch seat height, and 1.6-gallon fuel capacity. Those numbers describe a compact machine that can be approachable and easy to handle, not a direct measure of highway suitability or real-world range.

What “more capable” means—and what the evidence can show

“More capable” depends on the job. A buyer who wants stronger performance on faster roads, more fuel capacity, or a broader range of riding may prefer a larger motorcycle. A buyer prioritizing low weight, a low seat, and urban use may find the Grom’s smaller format a better fit. No single engine-size comparison answers that choice.

A larger-bike example: the Honda CB500F

Honda’s 2024 CB500F illustrates the difference in scale: it has a 471cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine, a 4.5-gallon tank, a 414-pound curb weight, and a 31.3-inch seat height. The added displacement and tank capacity may suit some longer or faster-road use, while its nearly 190-pound weight increase over the Grom is a real manageability consideration. Tank size alone does not establish riding range, which varies with speed, conditions, and riding style.

Honda described the CB500F in its April 30, 2024 release as welcoming to new enthusiasts while retaining a nimble character. That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent assessment; whether the bike feels manageable depends on the rider and the particular motorcycle. Can a used motorcycle really be cheaper?

It can be, but the available prices do not establish that a particular used model currently costs less than a Grom in your area. Kawasaki’s current U.S. category listing, as surfaced in October 2026, shows new starting MSRPs of $4,999 for the Ninja 300 and $5,399 for the Ninja 500; those new-bike figures say nothing definitive about used asking prices. Kawasaki’s motorcycle category listing.

There is no supported market-wide average, discount percentage, or current used-bike price advantage to apply here. Treat the title’s bargain as a possibility to verify against local listings, not a promise. Community suggestions such as CB500 and SV650 models in response to a $4,000-budget question are individual discussion, not representative pricing or proof that either model is available at that price. Compare the complete cost, not the listing price

Set the new Grom’s local out-the-door quote beside the used bike’s likely total cost. For the used motorcycle, include the seller’s price and any costs required to make it road-ready. A low asking price can disappear quickly if the bike needs tires, overdue service, transport, or title-related work.

  • Purchase and transaction costs: account for taxes, registration, inspection, transport, and any dealer fees applicable to the transaction.
  • Immediate maintenance: price needed tires, chain and sprockets, brakes, fluids, and other overdue service before deciding the bike is cheaper.
  • Documentation: verify the title status and review maintenance records. Resolve uncertainty before handing over money.
  • Condition: inspect for leaks, worn tires, chain and sprockets, brake condition, fork-seal leaks, and warning lights. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection if you cannot assess the bike confidently.

Choose for your roads and your experience

Before choosing a candidate, decide what you need it to do. Faster roads, passenger use, and longer trips can favor a larger motorcycle, while a lighter, lower machine may be easier to manage in stop-and-go riding or at low speeds. The Grom’s 30-inch seat and 224-pound curb weight contrast with the cited CB500F’s 31.3-inch seat and 414-pound curb weight; seat height is only part of fit, and weight matters most when maneuvering, stopping, or picking up the bike.

  • Check how the exact bike fits you: seat height, reach to the controls, posture, clutch feel, and confidence at a stop all matter.
  • Weigh added road capability against added size and weight, especially if you are a newer rider.
  • Check whether the exact model and year have ABS, and confirm the motorcycle’s condition and recall status through official records before purchase. Safety equipment is not established across all used candidates.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Get a local Grom quote. Use the price for the model year you are considering, then ask for the full out-the-door amount rather than treating MSRP as the final cost.
  2. Find a specific used candidate. Compare actual local listings for the model and condition you would buy; do not infer used prices from new-bike MSRPs.
  3. Estimate its ready-to-ride cost. Add taxes and registration, inspection or transport, and the cost of necessary immediate service or repairs.
  4. Check records and condition. Verify title status and maintenance history, inspect key wear items and warning lights, and obtain an independent inspection if needed.
  5. Test the fit against your use. Consider your roads, desired range, passenger needs, experience, seat fit, and comfort controlling the bike’s weight.
  6. Buy on the full comparison. The used motorcycle is the cheaper, more capable option only if its verified total cost is lower and its condition, fit, and road capability genuinely meet your needs.
