Sometimes—but the word “book” does not settle the question. A refundable reservation, an unaccepted offer and a purchase contract accepted by the dealer can have different effects. The answer depends on your country or state and on what your written documents say. Before signing anything new, compare the booking terms with the complete price and contract the dealer is asking you to accept.
First, work out what “booking” means in your case
A payment or online confirmation may record an expression of interest, a reservation, an offer awaiting acceptance, or a step toward a separate vehicle purchase contract. Those are not interchangeable. Check the confirmation and terms for the document’s actual name, what the payment reserves, whether the dealer or manufacturer accepted your offer, and which later event creates the purchase contract.

Mercedes-Benz’s published online processes vary by market. The examples below describe those particular programs; they do not establish a global rule or necessarily govern a dealer-arranged sale in the same country.

These market-specific terms show why a deposit receipt alone may not answer whether your price is fixed. In India, Mercedes-Benz says that after acceptance of the reservation it undertakes not to increase the purchase price stated in the online store under the reservation conditions. That statement concerns the specified India online reservation process; it should not be applied automatically to another country, another sales channel or a different document.

Read the document that governs the next step
Gather the booking confirmation, deposit receipt, vehicle order, price sheet, dealer addendum, and any signed purchase or financing contract. Read them together rather than relying on a salesperson’s description of what “booking” means. Look for the stated vehicle and configuration, the amount and currency, the document’s acceptance status, and the terms describing when a price can change.
- Offer or request: Check whether the document says you are making an offer that still needs acceptance. In the India process, for example, the receipt email by itself does not show acceptance.
- Reservation: Identify what is reserved, for how long if stated, and whether it promises a price or only records an intention to buy. Do not assume that a reservation payment is the vehicle’s purchase price.
- Accepted order or contract: Check who accepted it and whether the document records a fixed total, an estimate, or conditions that can affect the amount. A signed document is not automatically the only relevant paper; the applicable terms and local law also matter.
- Change language: Find any clause referring to a manufacturer price change, taxes, delivery or transportation, financing, equipment, or later confirmation. Note the stated trigger and whether it applies to your order; do not treat a dealer’s general explanation as a substitute for the written clause.
The practical distinction is between a price that is expressly stated and protected under accepted terms, and a preliminary amount that is subject to later agreement. Whether a dealer can legally change a price after accepting a purchase contract depends on the governing contract and local law. A conclusion about a particular buyer’s rights requires the actual documents and jurisdiction.

In the United States, get the out-the-door amount in writing
The Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to ask for the out-the-door price in writing before going to the dealership. The FTC describes that figure as including all charges and fees, and advises buyers to compare the written offer with the purchase documents before signing. It also says, “Get your offer details (including discounts) in writing.” This is consumer guidance, not a ruling on an individual contract dispute.

A useful written total makes it easier to see whether the dealer has changed the vehicle price or introduced another charge. Ask the dealer to identify the amount for the car and each item included in the total, rather than treating a headline figure as the entire deal. Compare the details that can change the transaction:

- Discounts, rebates and the conditions attached to them.
- Taxes, registration, delivery or transportation charges, and dealer fees.
- Optional products or add-ons, including whether each is declined or accepted.
- Trade-in value and any other agreed trade-in terms.
- Financing terms and whether the approval is final.
Do not assume that a difference in the amount is necessarily a lawful or unlawful price increase without checking what changed and what your agreement says. A change to vehicle configuration, a newly listed add-on, a tax adjustment, and a change to the base price are distinct issues; ask the dealer to identify each one separately in writing.
Use this process if the dealer says the price has changed
- Pause before signing. Ask for the complete revised out-the-door amount and a copy of every document that differs from the version you were given or accepted. Do not sign revised terms unless you agree to them.
- Put the claim in writing. Ask the dealer to point to the exact clause or legal basis for the increase, name the amount being changed, and explain the trigger. Keep the response with your booking and contract records.
- Compare the transaction line by line. Match the vehicle and equipment, fees, add-ons, discounts, rebates, trade-in terms and financing conditions against the earlier written offer. Mark each changed item so a price change cannot be obscured by a different configuration or new product.
- Check acceptance and conditions. Determine whether you have a reservation, a pending offer, an accepted order or a purchase contract, and whether the relevant document makes the price conditional. If the documents are unclear or conflict, request a corrected written agreement that states the terms the dealer will honor.
- Keep records and choose your next step. Save confirmations, receipts, price sheets, revised paperwork and written messages. If the amount is significant or the dealer will not address a written commitment, consider contacting the relevant consumer protection agency or a local lawyer for advice specific to your location.
The FTC recommends checking discrepancies before signing. If the paperwork does not match what you understood you agreed to, ask questions and be prepared to walk away rather than signing first and trying to resolve the difference later.

Check carefully if the dealer says financing is not final
A dealer may say financing is still being approved and later present different terms. That is a financing issue as well as a price issue: compare the new documents with the terms you accepted, including any effect on the total amount you would pay. The FTC advises reviewing the new terms carefully. If you do not want the new deal, its guidance is to tell the dealer you want to cancel and request return of your down payment and trade-in, with written confirmation.

A Pennsylvania example shows why location matters
Pennsylvania’s motor vehicle dealer regulation generally prohibits a dealer from increasing the contract price after acceptance by the dealer or an authorized representative. The rule lists exceptions for specified changes tied to law or regulation, required equipment, transportation costs or tax rates, and currency revaluation for foreign-made vehicles.
This is a Pennsylvania rule, not a nationwide U.S. rule. It illustrates why the answer can turn on both the contract and the buyer’s location. Do not use the Pennsylvania exceptions as a list of universal reasons for a price change, or assume the same rule applies in another state or country.
Do not let add-ons disguise the change
When the revised paperwork is higher, check whether the dealer changed the vehicle price, added products, or represented an optional item as required. Ask which items are required for the transaction and which you can decline, and make sure the written total reflects your choice. The FTC has reported that as many as 75% of Asbury Automotive buyers said dealerships had added items to sales contracts secretly or told them the items were required. That figure is specific to the FTC’s reporting about Asbury Automotive buyers in 2024; it is not a rate for Mercedes-Benz dealers or dealerships generally.

A careful document comparison is more useful than relying on a verbal assurance that the new amount is standard. If an item was not part of the terms you accepted, ask for it to be removed or for the dealer to explain the contractual basis for including it before you decide whether to proceed.

There is no single worldwide answer to whether a Mercedes-Benz dealer can change a booking price. The most important facts are your country or state, whether you booked through a market-specific online portal or directly with a dealer, what document was accepted, the written price and any change clauses, and whether a separate purchase or financing contract has been signed. Without those details, the safest practical course is to ask for the dealer’s claimed basis in writing, compare the full revised terms, and avoid signing a price you do not accept.
