Cadillac is set to join Formula 1 in 2026 as the championship’s 11th team, backed by General Motors and TWG Motorsports. Mario Andretti is a director on the team’s board—not its team principal or technical director. The team will initially use Ferrari power units, with GM’s own engine program approved to begin supplying F1 from 2029, subject to homologation.
When does Cadillac join Formula 1?
Cadillac’s first season is 2026. On March 7, 2025, Formula 1 said the FIA and Formula One Management had approved the application after confirming it met the requirements to join the existing 10 teams. Cadillac therefore becomes the grid’s 11th team. Formula 1’s approval announcement described the entrant as backed by GM and TWG Motorsports. Cadillac’s corporate release also called the expansion an 11th-team milestone. Cadillac’s announcement includes FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s description of the approval as a transformative moment for the championship.
What role does Mario Andretti have?
Mario Andretti, the 1978 Formula 1 world champion and the last American to win the F1 drivers’ title, serves as a director on the team’s board. GM stated this role in its November 25, 2024 announcement. GM’s announcement does not identify Andretti as team principal or technical director, so “led by Mario Andretti” can be misleading if it implies that he runs race operations. His stated position is a board role.
Who owns and backs the Cadillac F1 team?
The entry is backed by General Motors and TWG Motorsports. GM is the manufacturer behind the Cadillac name and is developing the team’s future power unit; TWG Motorsports is the other named backer. The approval announcement described the new team as backed by both organizations. The available team information establishes those backers, but does not provide a detailed ownership breakdown or percentages.

Cadillac’s debut race drivers are Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, according to Formula 1’s Cadillac team profile. The same profile lists Zhou Guanyu as reserve driver. Driver and personnel listings can change by season, so the official profile is the most relevant reference for the current lineup.
What engine will Cadillac use?
Cadillac’s engine plan has two phases. Ferrari will supply the initial power units; GM’s own program is intended to follow from 2029, after its power units are homologated.

| Period | Power-unit supplier | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Initial seasons from 2026 | Ferrari | Cadillac begins as a Ferrari-powered entrant while GM develops its own F1 power unit. |
| From 2029 | GM Performance Power Units LLC, subject to homologation | The FIA approved GM Performance Power Units LLC as an official supplier beginning in 2029; the switch is not simply automatic if the engine is not homologated. |
The FIA’s April 23, 2025 announcement confirms GM Performance Power Units LLC’s approval as a supplier from 2029 and says Cadillac will use Ferrari power units until GM engines are homologated. Formula 1’s team profile likewise lists Ferrari as the initial power unit and GM’s planned debut from 2029.
Where is the team based, and who runs its technical operation?
Formula 1’s team profile lists the team’s base as Silverstone, United Kingdom. It names Marcin Budkowski as team chief and Nick Chester as technical chief, and gives the chassis designation as MAC-26. These are season-sensitive team details; the profile is the source for the current listed personnel and specifications.

Why is 2026 a significant season for a new team?
Cadillac arrives during a major technical reset rather than entering a settled rules cycle. The FIA describes the 2026 regulations as one of the biggest changes in F1 history, with a “Nimble Car Concept” aimed at making cars smaller and lighter. The FIA’s 2026 regulations overview sets out these headline targets:
- Cars targeted to be 30 kilograms lighter, with a target mass of 724 kilograms including tyres.
- Wheelbase reduced by 200 millimetres to 3,400 millimetres.
- Car width reduced by 100 millimetres and floor width by 150 millimetres.
- Advanced sustainable fuels, alongside revised impact and roll-hoop safety requirements.
The FIA calls Cadillac the first wholly new entrant since Haas joined in 2016. A new team must therefore build and integrate its organization while the sport’s car and power-unit rules are changing. The available facts establish the timing and scale of the regulation changes, but do not establish how competitive Cadillac will be against the existing teams.

What makes Cadillac’s entry different from an established team?
Cadillac enters as a new 11th team, with an explicit manufacturer role for GM and a planned transition from Ferrari power to a GM unit. The project also combines a UK base with US facilities. In its March 2025 approval release, Cadillac said TWG Motorsports had assembled more than 300 people across aerodynamics, chassis, components, software and vehicle-dynamics simulation. That is a company-reported staffing figure, not a measure of race performance.
GM’s November 2024 release described its broader motorsports record as more than 3,000 wins and more than 100 driver and manufacturer championships. Those are GM’s company-reported figures for its motorsports history; they do not represent Cadillac F1 results.
