BYD helped intensify China’s electric-car price war, cutting prices on more than 20 models in May 2025. But “decimates” overstates what the available sales evidence shows: BYD still sold 4.6 million vehicles in 2025, while its growth slowed and rivals including Geely and Leapmotor challenged it in budget cars. The story is not that cheaper BYDs wiped out local competitors; it is that discounting helped make an already fierce market more punishing, including for BYD itself.
What BYD’s price cuts did—and did not—show
In May 2025, BYD cut prices on more than 20 models. Reuters reported that the announcement helped trigger a selloff in Chinese auto stocks, a sign of how closely investors were watching the price war. It was a market shock, not evidence that competitors had been wiped out.

The available reporting does not give a like-for-like list of BYD and rival model prices, the size of each May discount, or a complete current market-share comparison. It therefore cannot establish that BYD was the cheapest brand across the market or quantify how much the cuts took from specific rivals.

BYD sold 4.6 million vehicles worldwide in full-year 2025, up 7.73% year over year, according to Reuters. That was its slowest annual growth pace in five years. The total covers vehicles, not just battery-electric cars, and does not by itself show how BYD performed in China versus overseas.

The pressure became more visible in the following months. Reuters reported that BYD’s total sales in December 2025 fell 18.3% year over year, marking a fourth consecutive month of declines. In March 2026, the Associated Press reported that BYD’s January–February total sales were down 36% year over year to 400,241 vehicles. These are different reporting windows, but both point to a sharp loss of momentum after the company’s 2025 annual growth.
Which Chinese rivals are challenging BYD?
Reuters identified Geely and Leapmotor as challengers to BYD in budget cars in its January 2026 reporting; the Associated Press later described Geely as gaining ground in early 2026. The evidence establishes competitive pressure in that segment, not a precise ranking of Chinese automakers by current market share.

That distinction matters: a company can gain ground without overtaking its rival, and competitive gains in budget cars do not automatically describe every vehicle type or the whole Chinese market.

Why low prices create pressure across the industry
BYD’s discounts were part of a wider Chinese auto-industry price war that Reuters traced to 2023. Automakers were also contending with excess production capacity and rising inventory, conditions that can make price competition difficult to escape: discounting may help attract buyers, but it can also squeeze the money left over from each sale.
- Reuters reported that the median net margin across China’s automaker sector was 0.83% in 2024, down from 2.7% in 2019.
- Combined industry inventory reached 370 billion yuan in 2024, more than double the 2019 level, Reuters reported.
- For BYD specifically, the Associated Press reported 2025 revenue of 804 billion yuan, up 3.5%, and profit of 32.6 billion yuan, down 19%.
These figures describe sector-wide financial strain and BYD’s own reported results; they do not prove that discounts alone caused the margin or profit changes. BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu, quoted by the Associated Press from the company’s earnings report, described the environment this way: “We also recognize that competition in the NEV (new energy vehicle) industry has reached a fever pitch, and is undergoing a brutal ‘knockout stage’.” That is the chairman’s characterization of the competition, not an independent analyst’s assessment.

BYD has an overseas growth counterweight to its pressure at home. Reuters reported that BYD exports rose 65% year over year in January–May 2026. Over that same period, however, its overall deliveries fell by more than 20%. Export growth is therefore a meaningful expansion, but the figures do not show that it had already offset the broader delivery decline.

“Sales” figures also need to be read with their scope intact: the cited totals concern BYD vehicles, not battery-electric vehicles alone, while the export figure covers a different slice of the business. They should not be treated as interchangeable measures of domestic demand or EV market share.

No. The evidence supports a more complicated conclusion: BYD’s May 2025 cuts amplified a price contest that was already reshaping China’s auto industry, and the company remained a huge seller. But its growth slowed in 2025, total sales fell in reported periods into early 2026, and reporting named Geely and Leapmotor as challengers in budget cars. Without a current comparable market-share dataset or model-by-model price comparison, “decimates” is not a defensible description of the competitive outcome.
