When will BYD cars be assembled in Pakistan?
There is no confirmed production start date. BYD Pakistan said in July 2025 that it expected the first locally assembled vehicle in July or August 2026. That target was missed. On September 6, 2026, Dawn reported that Hubco management now expected the plant to begin operating in the second half of 2026. PACRA’s July 14, 2026 rating release had put expected facility completion at the end of calendar year 2026. These are dated expectations, not confirmation that assembly has started.

Where is the BYD plant?
The proposed facility is in Gharo, District Thatta, Sindh, near Karachi. The Special Technology Zones Authority lists the site as 73.4 acres and describes it as a BYD NEV Production Zone intended to bring together vehicle assembly, testing, training and smart-factory systems. PACRA rounds the area to 73 acres in its July 2026 release.
Who is building it, and what is the planned capacity?
The project is a BYD and Mega Motor Company venture. PACRA describes Mega Motor as BYD’s sole authorized distributor in Pakistan and says it is equally owned by Hub Power Holdings Limited and Mega Conglomerate. The plant’s announced initial capacity is 25,000 vehicles a year; PACRA describes the target on a double-shift basis. Dawn reported that capacity could scale to 50,000 vehicles annually, based on Hubco management information. Those are planned capacity figures, not evidence of production or actual output.

Dawn’s September 2026 report put total investment at $150 million, including $90 million in project financing, based on Hubco management information.
What will local assembly involve?
The initial plan described assembling imported parts and making some non-electric components locally. In June 2026, the partners also described a phased localization roadmap, but the sources cited do not set out its stages, local-content targets or schedule. Assembly from imported kits and deeper local manufacturing are different levels of localization; the published information does not establish when or how quickly the project would move between them.

The original announcement focused on supplying the domestic market. It mentioned regional exports of right-hand-drive vehicles only as a possibility, subject to freight costs and business economics—not as a guaranteed export programme.

No first model has been confirmed in the cited reporting. Dawn said Mega Motor did not respond to questions about the delay, localization, vehicle imports before production or first-year output. The available information therefore does not support claims about a model-by-model launch sequence or a confirmed production volume for year one.

Will local assembly make BYD cars cheaper?
No price reduction or locally assembled launch price has been announced in the cited sources. Local assembly alone does not establish what a vehicle will cost: the price would depend on factors such as the assembly arrangement, locally sourced content and applicable costs. Until a model, specification and price are officially announced, buyers should not treat a lower price as confirmed.
How does the project fit Pakistan’s EV plans?
The project is presented as more than an assembly facility: its planned functions include testing, training and smart-factory systems, while the partners have referred to phased localization. At the June 2026 meeting, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said a robust charging network would be critical to accelerating EV adoption. That infrastructure matters to buyers as well as manufacturers, but charging expansion does not resolve the plant’s delayed schedule.
Dawn reported that Hubco Green had 24 operational DC fast-charging sites, with sites around 200 km apart on average and plans to reduce the spacing to 100 km. The report gave an approximate charging time of 25–45 minutes. These are Hubco Green network figures reported in September 2026, not a nationwide count or a guarantee that every route has convenient charging.
