The BYD Seagull is sold as the Dolphin Mini in Latin America and the Dolphin Surf in Europe, and its price, equipment and specifications vary by market. BYD’s Mexico sheet, updated in May 2025, lists two versions with claimed NEDC ranges of 300 km and 380 km. Whether either is affordable depends on your country’s current price, incentives, and locally available alternatives—figures that are not established here.
What is the BYD Seagull?
It is a small electric hatchback in a family BYD identifies by different names in different markets: Seagull in China, Dolphin Mini in Latin America, and Dolphin Surf in Europe. The names identify related market versions, not a guarantee that every country’s car has the same equipment or specifications. BYD describes the naming and production milestone in its June 30, 2025 announcement.
That distinction matters when comparing prices or reading specifications: compare the exact local model, trim and model year rather than assuming a figure published for one country applies everywhere.
What range and specifications does BYD publish?
BYD Mexico’s technical sheet, updated May 2025, lists two Dolphin Mini versions. Its range figures are manufacturer-declared NEDC figures, not independently measured real-world results.

Both versions in that sheet list a 55 kW maximum motor output, 135 Nm maximum torque, 130 km/h top speed, 7 kW AC charging, and 30 minutes for a 30-to-80 percent DC charge. BYD says charging speed depends on the available equipment and local infrastructure. The sheet also gives dimensions of 3,780 mm long, 1,715 mm wide and 1,580 mm high, a 2,500 mm wheelbase, 230 L of cargo volume and five seats. These are specifications for the versions on the Mexico technical sheet; they should not be assigned automatically to other market versions.
What does the NEDC range mean in everyday driving?
The 300 km and 380 km figures above are NEDC test-cycle claims. They do not promise that a driver will cover those distances on a charge in ordinary use. BYD’s Mexico sheet says range varies with factors including vehicle and motor use, driving style, roads and climate. Treat the figures as a reference for the specified versions, not as a guarantee for a particular trip or as a direct comparison with figures measured under a different test cycle.

Can you charge it at home, and what connector does it use?
Home charging may be an option, but the charging setup is market-specific. BYD Brazil’s product page lists a Type 2 AC port rated at 6.6 kW. The Mexico sheet lists 7 kW AC charging and DC charging as described above. These published details do not establish that every Seagull-family version uses the same port, or that a cable is included with every car.
Before arranging home charging or buying a cable, confirm the port, charging rate, included equipment and compatibility with the exact country version and trim through a local dealer. Is the BYD Seagull affordable?
There is not enough market-specific pricing information here to give a reliable yes or no. A current price for one country cannot stand in for another: taxes, incentives, trim, delivery timing and competing cars differ. No current local retail price or comparable alternative set is established here, so an old launch price, currency conversion or manufacturer’s “affordable” claim would not settle the question.
To judge value where you live, compare the same purchase basis and date for the exact trim and locally available alternatives. Include:

- Battery size and range claims, noting the test cycle used for each vehicle.
- Local connector, charging access and any equipment included with the car.
- Warranty terms, nearby service support and availability.
- Equipment and independent safety evidence for the exact version and model year.
What do production announcements and safety information tell you?
BYD said the first Dolphin Mini produced in Brazil rolled off the line at its Camaçari complex on July 1, 2025. The company described the event as part of preparing the production line; it does not establish current production volume, local stock or delivery lead times. BYD’s announcement also identifies the car as the Seagull in China and Dolphin Surf in Europe.
BYD reported on June 30, 2025 that the Seagull/Dolphin Mini/Dolphin Surf family had passed one million vehicles produced. That is a manufacturer-reported production milestone, not an independent reliability assessment or evidence of market share.
