The BYD Atto 2 DM-i is the one to investigate if you can charge regularly and want electric-only driving for everyday trips; the MG ZS Hybrid+ is the simpler fit if you want petrol-electric operation without plugging in. They are different kinds of hybrid, so the right choice depends first on your charging routine—not just the word “hybrid” in their names.
How the two hybrid systems differ
BYD Atto 2 DM-i: a plug-in hybrid
BYD España introduced the Atto 2 DM-i as a plug-in hybrid using the company’s DM-i technology. A PHEV can draw energy from regenerative braking and from an external charger. That gives you the option of charging at home or work and using electric power for routine journeys, then relying on the hybrid system for longer trips.
BYD’s October 2025 European launch announcement claimed up to 90 km of combined-cycle electric range and more than 1,000 km of total range with a full battery and fuel tank. These are manufacturer claims, not independently tested results. The announcement also said two versions would have different battery capacities, ranges, power and performance, but did not provide their full specifications in the material available here. MG ZS Hybrid+: a full hybrid
MG describes the ZS Hybrid+ as a full hybrid, not a plug-in. Its small battery is charged through the hybrid system, including regenerative braking; the ownership routine does not depend on finding an external charger. That makes it the more straightforward option if you want a hybrid SUV but cannot reliably charge at home or work.

In its October 2024 Austrian launch release, MG listed a 100 kW electric motor, a 75 kW petrol engine and a 1.83 kWh battery. Combined system output is 145 kW (197 PS), with a three-speed automatic transmission. MG quoted 0–100 km/h in 8.7 seconds and WLTP combined fuel consumption of 5.0 L/100 km. These are manufacturer specifications and test-cycle figures; actual consumption varies by conditions and driving. The same release gives a body length of 4.43 m and a wheelbase of 2.61 m. The MG figure is from Austria’s 2024 launch announcement, not a promise for every market or configuration. MG Deutschland’s current model page shows configuration-dependent WLTP consumption and emissions, and cautions that actual consumption depends on equipment, tyres, road surface, weather and driving style. Check the local specification rather than applying another country’s exact figure: MG Deutschland’s ZS Hybrid+ page.

Which one makes more sense for your routine?
Consider the Atto 2 DM-i if charging is easy
- You can routinely plug in at home or work and want your everyday journeys to use electric power when the battery allows.
- Your regular trips are short enough that the announced electric range is relevant to your use; BYD’s “up to 90 km” is a combined-cycle maximum, not a guaranteed real-world distance.
- You are willing to confirm the version, local specification, charging equipment and delivery availability with a dealer before making a decision.
BYD’s European FAQ explains the general distinction between PHEVs and non-plug-in hybrids. Its detailed charging rates and range examples concern the Seal U DM-i, however, and should not be treated as Atto 2 DM-i specifications.
Consider the MG ZS Hybrid+ if you do not want to plug in
- You want a petrol-electric vehicle that can manage its battery through the hybrid system rather than an external charging routine.
- Your driving includes longer journeys and you prefer refuelling without planning charging stops.
- You want to assess a model with published output, acceleration and launch WLTP figures, while checking the current local version and consumption data.
What to verify before choosing
- Charging access: Be realistic about whether a home or workplace charger is available and convenient. If not, the Atto 2 DM-i’s plug-in capability may be less useful to you.
- Local availability: BYD’s October 2025 announcement forecast European availability in Q1 2026. That forecast does not confirm current stock or delivery timing in your country; check with a local dealer.
- Matched prices and trims: MG’s Austrian launch release listed Standard at €22,990, Comfort at €24,990 and Luxury at €26,990. These were Austrian launch prices from October 2024, not current offers. The cited BYD announcement confirms two versions but gives no full equipment or current prices, so the sources do not establish a same-market price comparison.
- Equipment and ownership costs: Compare equivalent local trims, taxes, incentives and dealer offers. Do not assume equipment lists or pricing transfer between countries.
- Practical fit: The cited material does not establish comparative cabin or boot measurements, ride quality, independent real-world energy or fuel use, or comparative safety results. Check local specifications and independent tests for those questions before treating either SUV as the better all-rounder.
The short decision
Choose the Atto 2 DM-i for further investigation if you can charge routinely and electric-only daily driving is a priority. Choose the MG ZS Hybrid+ for further investigation if you want a full hybrid that does not require plugging in. For either one, make the final comparison using current local prices, specifications and delivery information—not a launch forecast or an older price from another market.
