Before paying for a new car, get the full on-road price and booking terms in writing. Then verify the specific car allocated to you, inspect it before acceptance, and make sure the paperwork matches both the vehicle and buyer. These eight checks help buyers in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru avoid preventable surprises during the Diwali buying period.
Before you pay
1. Get the complete price in writing
Ask the dealer for an itemized final quotation for the exact model and variant. It should show the car price, discounts, taxes, registration, insurance, accessories and every other charge. Ask what each add-on includes and whether it is optional; do not rely on a verbal assurance that a charge is compulsory.

2. Read the booking terms before paying
Keep the booking receipt and a copy of the written terms. Check that they identify the selected variant and state the cancellation and refund rules, the promised delivery date, and what happens if the allocated vehicle differs from what you booked. Booking terms and refund arrangements are transaction-specific; this is not a universal refund entitlement. Get the dealer’s commitments in writing, especially if you are buying in the hope of delivery before Diwali.

3. Review insurance independently
Ask for the proposed policy type, coverage, add-ons, premium and insurer details, then review them rather than treating the insurance line in the quotation as self-explanatory. When a vehicle is allocated
4. Confirm the allocated car’s identity
Ask for the vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis identity and confirm that the car you will inspect is the one allocated to you. Match its model, variant, fuel type, transmission and colour against your booking and quotation. Manufacturing details are read using manufacturer-specific methods, so do not assume one VIN decoding method applies to every make.

5. Inspect the car before accepting it
Where the dealer’s process allows, inspect the vehicle before registration and final acceptance. Check visible body panels and paint, glass, tyres and wheels, lights, windows, controls, warning lamps and the equipment included with the car. If a short, safe test drive is available, it can reveal obvious problems, but it cannot establish long-term reliability.
Photograph and document concerns. For a material issue, ask the dealer to record the concern and provide a written remedy before you accept the car. A practical checklist can help you work through the inspection, but it is not a regulator’s defect standard. DriveCircle: New-Car PDI Checklist.

6. Check tyres and simple items
Confirm that the tyre size matches the vehicle specification and look for visible damage. Check pressure against the label on the car’s door frame or the owner’s manual—not a general figure found online. A tyre-pressure gauge can be useful, but it is optional.
At paperwork and handover
7. Match the documents to the car and buyer
Compare the invoice, booking, insurance and registration details with the buyer’s name and the vehicle identity. Collect receipts, warranty information and written details of any promised accessories. IRDAI says the registration and insurance should be in the same name and address. 8. Verify the handover and the local registration process
At handover, recheck the VIN, vehicle condition, keys, included accessories and documents. Confirm any agreed fuel or charge level and make sure the commitments recorded at booking have been met.
For a purchase in Hyderabad, Telangana Transport Department guidance says the dealer handles temporary registration at purchase. Its page lists the temporary registration certificate, Forms 20, 21 and 22, dealer invoice, insurance certificate and tax receipt among the documents to collect; it states that temporary registration is valid for 30 days from issue. That Telangana guidance should not be applied to Mumbai or Bengaluru. Check current registration rules and charges with the Maharashtra or Karnataka transport authority, respectively; current state-specific amounts are not established here.

No delivery date is established by the checks above, and booking by a particular date does not guarantee delivery before Diwali. Ask the dealer to put the promised date and the vehicle allocation in writing, and check what the booking terms say if the date or allocated car changes.
