Reports of booking problems at Butler describe the centre’s May 2023 launch—not a confirmed booking crisis today. Transport WA’s current guidance says metropolitan practical driving assessments (PDAs) are booked through DoTDirect, but it does not publish live Butler appointment availability or current wait times. Butler currently offers PDAs for several vehicle classes, while heavy rigid, heavy combination and multi combination assessments are not available there.
Why were learners struggling to book at Butler?
Butler replaced Joondalup as the driver and vehicle services site for Perth’s north-west when it opened on 22 May 2023. The WA Government said Joondalup was no longer fit for purpose as the area’s population grew, and that the new centre would provide practical driving assessments. The government’s opening announcement described the move as an expansion of service for the area.
In a report published on 18 May 2023, PerthNow said applicants encountered search time-outs after relatively few searches and reported that 50 candidates had secured a Butler appointment from 23 May on the first day bookings opened. The report also described a change from a previous daily search limit of 1,000 to an hourly limit. Those are opening-period figures, not current booking statistics. PerthNow’s contemporaneous report also said medium rigid truck assessment bookings were not yet available at that point.
Driving instructors quoted in that story described practical effects on their businesses and students, including travel changes and learners booking before they felt ready. Those were individual observations, not a measured account of all Perth driving schools. The launch report does not establish that its booking restrictions or scarcity continue today.

Why can’t I book a driving test in Butler now?
The current official booking guidance explains how to book but does not show Butler’s live appointment calendar or state current wait times, search limits or test capacity. If no suitable date appears in DoTDirect, the available evidence cannot establish whether that reflects a temporary lack of appointments, the selected class or another booking issue. Check DoTDirect for current dates rather than relying on 2023 reports or assuming the launch-period search problem persists. Transport WA’s PDA booking page provides the official process.
How do I book a WA practical driving assessment?
- Open DoTDirect and choose the practical driving assessment booking service. Metropolitan PDAs are booked online through DoTDirect.
- Select the appropriate assessment and location. Check that Butler offers the vehicle class you need, and review the dates DoTDirect actually makes available.
- Book up to six months ahead. Transport WA permits bookings within that window; the site does not guarantee that a date will be available at every location or for every class.
- Make any changes in time. Give at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule without paying for another PDA. If you fail a PDA, you must wait seven days before rebooking online.
There is no online booking fee through DoTDirect. Transport WA advises learners not to pay an instructor or private business an extra fee merely to secure a PDA booking.
Can my driving instructor book my test?
Yes. An instructor can book on a learner’s behalf through DoTDirect, but the learner’s consent is required. The candidate remains responsible for personal information shared with an instructor or private business. An instructor can help with the booking process; that does not guarantee access to an appointment. Transport WA’s booking guidance sets out these rules.
Which driving test classes can I take at Butler?
Transport WA’s Butler location page lists the following practical driving assessments as bookable online:

| Motorcycle (RE, RN, R) | Listed |
| Light rigid (LR) | Listed |
| Medium rigid (MR) | Listed |
| Heavy rigid (HR) | Unavailable at Butler |

These are the classes shown on Transport WA’s Butler centre page. It gives the address as 225 Butler Boulevard, Butler WA 6036, and weekday hours as 8:15 am–4:30 pm. The page does not provide live appointment availability.
What do I need to bring to my WA driving test?
- A licensed, roadworthy vehicle suitable for the assessment class.
- If you kept a paper logbook, the completed and signed logbook.
- If you used Learn&Log, your digital completion declaration.
Transport WA’s PDA guidance explains the test-day requirements. The logbook requirement depends on how you recorded your driving hours.

Use the current DoTDirect calendar to decide whether Butler meets your timing needs; the 2023 launch report cannot tell you what appointments are available now. When comparing locations, consider the actual offered date and time, whether the centre accepts your assessment class, travel, and whether you can use an appropriate vehicle for the test. The available official information does not establish which Perth centre currently has the shortest wait.
The WA Government’s May 2023 opening announcement said the centre had free parking, access on bus route 484 and was an 850-metre walk from Butler Station. Treat those as opening-announcement details rather than guaranteed current travel conditions; check local transport information before setting out. In the same announcement, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said: “The move to Butler will provide improved amenities for both DoT customers and staff, and changes to DoT’s concierge services in-centre are expected to reduce wait times and deliver a better customer service experience.” That expectation concerned in-centre customer-service waits, not the supply of PDA appointments.
