Main Roads Western Australia estimates savings of 11 to 18 minutes for relevant trips, but that is not a guaranteed saving for every journey. The road is operational; what remains unclear from the latest surfaced official works information is whether all finishing work and restrictions have ended.
Is the Wilman Wadandi Highway open?
Yes. The Bunbury Outer Ring Road, officially named the Wilman Wadandi Highway, opened to traffic on 16 December 2024. The Australian Government confirmed the opening and described the route as connecting Forrest Highway north of Bunbury with Bussell Highway south of the city (Australian Government opening announcement). Main Roads WA later said the highway had been fully operational since December 2024 (Main Roads project page; September 2025 project update).
It is a 27-kilometre, four-lane road linking the two highways. For through-traffic travelling between those endpoints, Main Roads says it avoids 13 sets of traffic lights and a rail level crossing (Main Roads 2024 explainer). That changes the route available to drivers; it does not mean every trip within Bunbury or the South West is shorter.
How much time does the Bunbury Outer Ring Road save?
Main Roads WA’s project page gives the current official estimate as 11 to 18 minutes, depending on the destination and peak traffic conditions along the route (Main Roads project page). Its 2024 pre-opening explainer used the same range for travel between north and south Bunbury and likewise qualified it by destination and traffic (Main Roads explainer).

Government announcements used broader wording at different points: up to 18 minutes in the October 2024 naming announcement, around 20 minutes in an opening-date statement on 24 October 2024, and up to 20 minutes in the December opening announcement. Each was an estimate, qualified by destination, traffic or road conditions—not a measured result for a particular driver’s trip (WA Government naming announcement; WA Government opening-date statement; WA Government opening announcement).
| Publisher and timing | Published estimate | Scope or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Main Roads WA, project page, accessed 2026 | 11–18 minutes | Varies by destination and peak traffic conditions along the route. |
| Main Roads WA, 2024 pre-opening explainer | 11–18 minutes | North–south Bunbury travel; varies by destination and traffic. |
| WA Government, October 2024 naming announcement | Up to 18 minutes | Depends on destination, road and traffic conditions. |
| WA Government, 24 October 2024 opening-date statement | Around 20 minutes | Depends on traffic conditions. |
| WA Government, December 2024 opening statement | Up to 20 minutes | Opening announcement estimate, not a trip-specific measurement. |
The figures differ in phrasing and scope, so they should not be treated as competing measurements. The official material reviewed does not provide a post-opening before-and-after study for defined origin-and-destination pairs. The 11–18-minute range is therefore best read as a project estimate for relevant through-trips, not a promise that every driver will save that amount.

Why doesn’t my trip save 18 minutes?
The 18-minute figure is the upper end of an estimate, not a fixed reduction from every Bunbury journey. A trip’s result depends on where it starts and ends, whether the ring road is a useful route for that destination, and traffic conditions. A short local trip—or one that does not need to cross Bunbury between the highway endpoints—may gain little or nothing from taking the ring road.
Route design explains the intended advantage: through-drivers can avoid the signals and rail crossing on the old route between Forrest and Bussell highways. But avoiding those obstacles does not establish a uniform time saving for all routes, and the official estimates do not supply a trip-by-trip calculator or measured post-opening comparison.

What changed for Bunbury, and what the traffic figures mean
Main Roads says the project is intended to improve freight efficiency, reduce local congestion, make journey times more reliable and improve access to Bunbury Port and industrial areas (Main Roads project page). Those are project objectives and expected benefits, not evidence that every local journey is now faster.
- About 15,000 vehicles per day: this was the Australian Government’s expected daily diversion from Bunbury local roads in its December 2024 opening announcement. It is a forecast, not a current observed traffic count (Australian Government announcement).
- 17 kilometres of shared paths: reported in the WA Government’s project overview (Building for Tomorrow project overview).
- $1.46 billion project budget: listed in the same WA Government overview (Building for Tomorrow project overview).
Are there still roadworks or restrictions?
The status is not established by the latest surfaced official information. A September 2025 Main Roads update said finishing work had continued after the highway became operational and that a final bitumen seal was scheduled for early 2026. The update said its information was current as of June 2025 and subject to change, so it does not confirm whether that work was completed (Main Roads September 2025 update).

The Main Roads project page also lists intermittent short-term lane and shoulder closures and 80 km/h speed reductions with an end date in late August 2026. That date has passed, so the listing should not be treated as current guidance or proof that restrictions remain. For conditions on a particular travel day, check Main Roads WA’s live travel map.

The official name recognises the Wilman and Wadandi Noongar people. In the WA Government’s 7 October 2024 announcement, Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said: “Recognising and integrating a Noongar name for such an important route, honours the Wilman and Wadandi people and their connection to the land.” (WA Government announcement).
