The clearest year-by-year comparison available covers 2010–2017: by Model Year Index’s complaint-based method, 2016–2017 rank strongest and 2011–2012 weakest. Treat that as a cautious screening signal, not a prediction that any individual car will be reliable or trouble-prone.
How the LaCrosse reliability ranking works
Model Year Index compares NHTSA complaints filed during each model year’s first 60 months after it went on sale, then applies a severity-weighted index. Using the same time window helps reduce the advantage older cars would otherwise have from simply accumulating reports for longer. Its data vintage is August 9, 2026.
The reports are voluntary allegations, not independently verified failures, and owners’ likelihood of filing a complaint varies. The site’s grades and index are its own analysis, not official reliability ratings. NHTSA also says there is no fixed complaint count that automatically triggers an investigation; it reviews each complaint alongside other information to assess whether a safety-defect trend may exist. The grades below are Model Year Index’s grades. Lower index values indicate a better result within this comparison; the source reports 2011 and 2012 at roughly 1.8 times the model median, while 2016 and 2017 are below half the median.

Complaint counts in the table are the source’s recorded reports for each year, not failure rates; they do not establish how many cars were affected. The figures cover these eight scored years only, not every LaCrosse generation.
What can—and cannot—be said about other generations
The available year-by-year series does not provide a comparable score for every LaCrosse generation. RepairPal’s model-wide repair figures combine years, and J.D. Power’s 2019 owner rating uses a separate framework. Neither can responsibly be used to fill missing years or extend the 2010–2017 ordering to the whole nameplate.

RepairPal’s all-years benchmark
RepairPal rates the LaCrosse 4.0 out of 5 and ranks it 15th among 24 midsize cars on its page. It reports an average annual repair and maintenance cost of $569, 0.3 unscheduled repair visits per year, and a 12% probability of a severe repair. J.D. Power’s 2019 rating
J.D. Power gives the 2019 LaCrosse 90/100 for Quality & Reliability. Its measure addresses defects, malfunctions, and design flaws experienced by owners, and its page describes rankings as powered by VIN-verified owners. Check recalls and condition before buying
Verify the specific car’s recall status
A GM safety-defect report filed with NHTSA identifies certain 2010–2013 LaCrosse vehicles registered in corrosion states as affected by a rear-suspension recall. The report lists 100,853 LaCrosse vehicles in its defined affected population and production dates from March 10, 2009 through May 1, 2013. Those limits matter: the model years alone do not establish whether a particular car is included. Check the VIN in NHTSA’s official recall lookup for unrepaired recalls. Compare the actual examples, not just their year
- Ask for maintenance and repair records, and compare mileage, configuration, and documented service between candidates.
- Arrange an independent inspection; a year’s position in a complaint-based ranking cannot reveal an individual car’s condition.
- Consider an OBD-II scan for stored diagnostic trouble codes as one part of an evaluation. A scanner does not verify recall status or replace an inspection. RepairPal’s OBD-II code reference.
- Use reported problems as prompts for questions and inspection, not proof that a defect exists in every car of that year.
