That was the start of customer handovers—not the end of production. Bugatti announced in July 2026 that the 99-car run was complete, closing what it describes as the W16’s road-going production chapter.
What happened to the first two customer Mistrals?
On 19 February 2025, Bugatti said the first two customer W16 Mistrals were leaving its Molsheim Atelier for the United States. The announcement described two individually specified cars, with distinct exterior treatments and Dancing Elephant gear-lever sculptures.
| Car | Exterior and accents | Personalized detail |
|---|---|---|
| First example | Black Carbon with Bugatti Light Blue Sport accents | Bugatti said each car expressed its customer’s vision; the release highlighted its Dancing Elephant gear-lever sculpture. |
| Second example | White Glacier with Atlantic Blue and Italian Red details | Its Dancing Elephant sculpture received a different treatment. |
Bugatti did not identify the customers or report mechanical differences between the two cars. The announcement concerns the first two handovers, not a two-car production total. Bugatti’s 19 February 2025 announcement
When did W16 Mistral production end?
Bugatti announced on 16 July 2026 that production had concluded, with 99 W16 Mistrals built. That milestone came after the first customer cars were announced as leaving Molsheim in February 2025: deliveries began before the final production milestone. What “end of the W16 era” means
Bugatti presents the Mistral as the W16’s final road-going production car and a swansong for the engine in road use. That is a specific claim about the road-going production chapter, not evidence that a W16 could never be used in a non-roadgoing context. Road & Track likewise cautioned against interpreting the milestone as ruling out every other kind of W16 use. Road & Track’s 17 July 2026 report
In Bugatti’s February 2025 announcement, Managing Director Hendrik Malinowski described the Mistral as “not just a symbol of our commitment to automotive innovation; it also represents a spectacular showcase for the exquisite legacy of Bugatti roadster design, and a beautiful closing chapter of the legendary W16 era.” That was the company’s promotional framing of the car’s significance.
