Big displays can make a car feel modern, but they do not make it luxurious on their own. A more convincing interior depends on the quality of its materials and finish, how well its controls and software work together, and whether the design suits the car and its driver. That is the design argument attributed to Bugatti chief executive Mate Rimac—not proof that every buyer prefers fewer screens.
What Mate Rimac’s argument is—and isn’t
A Motor1 article republished by inkl describes Rimac making his point while looking at a Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph interior, with its leather, wood and other materials. The article presents his broader view as a call for European automakers to compete through luxury and craftsmanship rather than simply matching rivals on screens, touch surfaces or charging speed.
That is a reported design and competitive-strategy position, not an independently tested prescription for the industry. The available account does not establish that Rimac used the exact phrase “Screens are not luxury.” That wording is documented in a separate interview with Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener.
Why screens alone don’t signal luxury
In an ABC News interview published February 23, 2025, Wagener said: “Screens are not luxury. You have a better — and bigger — TV at home, right? And every car has a big screen. So we have to create luxury beyond the screen. That’s why I talk about craftsmanship and sophistication. There’s so much emphasis on making [Mercedes] vehicles better.”

His point is that screen size has become an increasingly common feature, so it cannot carry the whole meaning of a premium interior. Materials, fit and finish, and the thought put into the cabin’s design can contribute to a sense of quality that a larger display does not provide by itself. That is a design rationale, not evidence that all drivers value those qualities more than technology.
Does a luxury car need a giant touchscreen?
No single answer fits every car. Wagener has argued for combining physical industrial design with digital user experience, rather than treating them as opposing choices. A Car Design News interview, published February 17, 2025 and modified July 2, 2025, quotes him saying that screens are common, that luxury must be created beyond them, and that physical industrial designers and digital UX designers should work together because a good interior combines hardware and software.

He also described legitimate uses for displays, including movies and games, and said screens could have more uses as autonomy increases. He suggested a sports car might not need a screen, but doubted that drivers would stop needing a visual reference altogether. His position is not “remove the screens”; it is to make sure the display is one considered part of the cabin, not a substitute for a well-designed one.
How to judge a screen-heavy interior
Instead of treating screen size or screen count as a luxury score, consider how the whole interior works:

- Materials and finish: Do surfaces, trim and touchpoints feel deliberate and well finished?
- Useful display and software: Does the screen make relevant tasks clear and easy, or does impressive hardware conceal a less polished software experience?
- Physical and digital controls: Are the interactions suited to the task, rather than putting every function on a touchscreen by default?
- Hardware and software together: Do the display, controls and cabin design feel like parts of one system?
- Fit for the vehicle: Does the interior suit the car’s purpose and intended buyer? A sports car and a vehicle designed for passengers to spend time being driven may have different needs.
Wagener acknowledged a gap between hardware and software in Mercedes’ Hyperscreen: he considered the hardware very good but the software less good at the time, and said more specific content was being developed. It is a useful illustration of why a large or advanced display is not, by itself, proof of a polished user experience.

Craftsmanship and premium materials do not offer a universal fix. The Motor1 account notes that mainstream automakers also need to build attainable, high-volume vehicles. Adding costly materials or reducing screens may not suit those products, and neither move automatically makes a car more competitive.

Nor do the cited interviews establish what consumers broadly prefer, how much they are willing to pay for craftsmanship, or whether screens affect safety. Wagener’s comments are those of one automaker’s design chief, not consumer research. The more defensible conclusion is narrower: a screen can be useful and well integrated, but its size alone does not settle whether an interior feels luxurious.
