The figure describes the charger’s maximum capability—not a guaranteed charging rate or a vehicle-specific charge time. An onboard charger is installed as part of a vehicle’s charging system; it is not the home or public charging station.
What BRUSA announced about the NLG6
A technical-paper listing from the Swiss Society of Automotive Engineers (SIA), dated 4 March 2013, describes BRUSA’s NLG6 as capable of three-phase operation up to 22 kW. The page credits the paper to Katja Stengert of BRUSA and says cars from a major European manufacturer equipped with the charger were already available, while other manufacturers were evaluating it. It does not name the automaker or any vehicle model. SIA: “On-board 22 kW fast charger ‘NLG6’”
New Atlas reported on 20 September 2012 that the NLG6 was expected later that year in vehicles from a “major European car manufacturer,” also without identifying the company. New Atlas: “BRUSA develops on-board EV fast charger for three-phase current”
What three-phase onboard charging means
An onboard charger (OBC) is vehicle-integrated power electronics. When an EV is connected to an AC supply, the OBC converts that power into the form needed to charge the vehicle’s high-voltage battery. A charging station or wall unit is external equipment that supplies AC; it does not become the NLG6, and the sources do not establish the NLG6 as a consumer accessory that can be added to a car.
#1 Best Overall
Three-phase describes the AC supply the charger can use. The SIA description’s “up to 22 kW” is the NLG6’s documented maximum charging-power capability. The power actually accepted by a vehicle at a given moment can be lower: the external supply, the vehicle’s electrical configuration, battery condition, and charging limits all matter.
Does 22 kW mean a car charges in under an hour?
No universal charging time follows from the NLG6’s 22 kW rating. The cited material does not give a named NLG6-equipped vehicle’s battery capacity, usable charging curve, or independently measured full-charge time. A maximum power rating alone cannot establish how long a particular EV takes to charge; the result depends on the vehicle and battery, the starting state of charge, available AC power, and the reduction in charging power as the battery fills.

- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
How later BRUSA charger specifications compare
Later BRUSA documents show why specifications should be tied to an exact model. These are NLG664 and NLG667 figures, not specifications for the NLG6.
| Model and document date | Three-phase figure | Single-phase figure | What the document says |
|---|---|---|---|
| NLG664, March 2021 datasheet | 20.75 kW maximum in the specification table; “up to 22 kW” in product highlights | 6.5 kW maximum | The headline figure is rounded in the highlights; the table gives the more precise maximum. BRUSA NLG664 datasheet |
| NLG667, datasheet labeled November 2020 | 20.5 kW maximum | Not stated in the cited specification summary | Its output-voltage range also differs from the NLG664. BRUSA NLG667 datasheet |
The NLG664 document also lists CAN control, galvanic isolation between mains and the high-voltage battery, and the ability to operate several NLG664 units in parallel. Those are NLG664 details and should not be attributed to the NLG6 without separate evidence. BRUSA’s later OBC7 announcement concerns a subsequent charger for commercial and off-highway applications and 400 V/800 V batteries; it is product-line context, not an NLG6 update. Quick Recap
Best Value
- TRUE 40A / 9.6kW LEVEL 2 SPEED - Most portable EV chargers stop at 16A or 32A. This one delivers a full 40 amps at 240V, adding roughly 30-35 miles of range per hour. Current is adjustable from 6A to 40A right on the LCD, so it safely matches whatever circuit you plug into - 20A, 30A or 50A.
- LEVEL 1 AND LEVEL 2 IN ONE - Plug the NEMA 14-50 into a 240V dryer or RV outlet for full Level 2 speed, or use the included NEMA 5-15 adapter for 120V Level 1 at any standard wall outlet. The charger auto-detects the outlet voltage and steps the pilot signal down on its own, so it will not trip a household breaker.
- FITS EVERY J1772 EV - TESLA OPTION AVAILABLE - This model ships with the standard SAE J1772 connector that fits every non-Tesla EV and plug-in hybrid sold in the US, including Ioniq 5, EV6, ID.4, Mustang Mach-E, Bolt, Leaf and Prius Prime. Driving a Tesla or another NACS vehicle? Select the J1772 Charger + Tesla Adapter option above and the NACS adapter ships in the box.
- SIX-LAYER PROTECTION, BUILT FOR THE DRIVEWAY - IP65 dust-tight and water-resistant housing in flame-retardant PC94-V0, with a thick TPE cable that stays flexible in the cold. Protection against overcurrent, leakage, surge, over-voltage and ground fault (RCD), plus a built-in temperature sensor that stops charging above 131F / 55C. RoHS and FCC compliant components throughout.
- COMPLETE KIT - NOTHING ELSE TO BUY - In the box: 25 ft charging cable, NEMA 14-50 plug, NEMA 5-15 adapter for 120V, wall holder for both the control box and the connector, a waterproof cover for outdoor use, and a padded carry bag. The delay timer lets you schedule charging for off-peak utility rates. Backed by a 30-day return window and US support.
