The 2026 U.S.-market Audi RS 3 is listed at 3.6 seconds from 0–60 mph; BMW lists the current M2 at 3.6 seconds with M xDrive, 3.9 seconds with rear-wheel drive and an automatic, or 4.1 seconds with rear-wheel drive and a manual. Those are manufacturer claims, not results from a shared test. The choice is also about format and character: the M2 is a coupe with a manual option, while the RS 3 is a sedan with standard quattro all-wheel drive and an RS torque splitter.
BMW M2 vs. Audi RS 3: 0–60 mph claims
For U.S. buyers, Audi’s 2026 RS 3 specification lists 394 hp, 369 lb-ft of torque, and a 0–60 mph time of 3.6 seconds. BMW’s U.S. technical data lists 473 bhp for the current M2 and different acceleration claims according to configuration:
| Configuration | Drivetrain and transmission | Published 0–60 mph | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Audi RS 3 | quattro all-wheel drive; RS torque splitter | 3.6 seconds | Audi U.S. model specifications |
| BMW M2 | Rear-wheel drive; 6-speed manual | 4.1 seconds | BMW U.S. technical data |
| BMW M2 | Rear-wheel drive; 8-speed automatic | 3.9 seconds | BMW U.S. technical data |
| BMW M2 | M xDrive all-wheel drive; 8-speed automatic | 3.6 seconds | BMW U.S. technical data |
On the published numbers, the RS 3 matches the M2 xDrive claim and is quicker than the rear-drive automatic and manual claims. That does not establish which car is quicker in a direct comparison: the figures come from each manufacturer, not a controlled, like-for-like test. BMW specifically cautions that M2 acceleration varies with vehicle specification, road and environmental conditions, test procedure, and driving style. Audi’s figure is for the 2026 U.S. RS 3; do not substitute output figures from other markets or model contexts.

BMW M2 vs. Audi RS 3 Nürburgring lap time
The Nürburgring’s official record list gives the Audi RS 3 a time of 7:33.123, set by Frank Stippler on 7 June 2024. It lists the BMW M2 Coupé at 7:38.706, set by Jörg Weidinger on 5 April 2023. The listed Audi time is 5.583 seconds faster, but these were separate attempts in different years—not a same-day or controlled head-to-head comparison.
The Nürburgring describes the official Nordschleife lap as 20.832 km and timed from a flying start. Its rules specify predefined timing points; official attempts are supervised and measured with calibrated technology, and a neutral testing organization documents the vehicle’s standard condition. Those procedures give context to the record list, but do not make laps from different years equivalent test conditions.

Audi’s 2024 record-lap account identifies track-focused equipment on its RS 3: Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R semi-slick tires, a 19-inch ceramic brake system, RS sports suspension with adaptive damper control, and an optimized chassis setup. These details describe the record car and should not be assumed to come standard on every retail RS 3.

Drivetrain and handling: rear drive or quattro?
The M2’s character depends on the version. BMW lists both a rear-wheel-drive 6-speed manual and a rear-wheel-drive 8-speed automatic, as well as an 8-speed automatic with M xDrive. The manual gives buyers a three-pedal option; the xDrive configuration is the M2 choice for someone who wants all-wheel drive.
The RS 3 pairs standard quattro all-wheel drive with an RS torque splitter. Audi says the system can distribute torque fully variably between the rear wheels. Audi RS 3 Technical Project Manager Marvin Schwätter described the effect this way: “The torque splitter, with its fully variable torque distribution between the rear wheels, has enabled us to achieve a new level of lateral dynamics. It was a game changer,”

Audi also attributes the 2024 RS 3’s improved lap performance to detailed chassis optimization, including work on the torque splitter, brake torque vectoring, and adaptive dampers. That is Audi’s explanation of the car’s development, not evidence that one drivetrain is categorically better for every driver or road.

Design and body style: coupe vs. sedan
The basic distinction is easy to see: BMW’s M2 is a two-door coupe; the U.S. Audi RS 3 is a sedan. If you want the coupe silhouette, the BMW fits that preference. If a sedan body better suits your needs, the Audi is the one to consider. Neither shape is objectively better-looking.
Audi calls attention to the RS 3’s flared fenders, large front and rear bumpers with air inlets, rear diffuser, oval RS tailpipes, and 19-inch wheels. These are identifiable design features; whether they look more appealing than the M2’s coupe proportions is a matter of taste. Compare the cars in person if the silhouette or details will determine your choice.

Quick Recap
Which should you choose?
- Choose the M2 manual if rear-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual are priorities.
- Consider the M2 xDrive if you want an all-wheel-drive M2; BMW lists its 0–60 claim at the same 3.6 seconds as Audi’s RS 3 claim.
- Consider the RS 3 if you want a sedan with standard quattro all-wheel drive and Audi’s rear-wheel torque-splitter system.
- Choose by body style and visual preference if the coupe-versus-sedan distinction matters more than the separate published performance figures.
