Brudeli’s Three-Wheel Leanster: How the 625L Leaned

The Brudeli Leanster paired two leaning front wheels with a driven rear wheel. Here is what patents and period coverage establish about the 625L and 654L.

The Brudeli Leanster is a motorcycle-like three-wheeler with two wheels at the front, one driven wheel at the rear, and a chassis designed to lean into turns. Its best-documented example is the 625L, described in a 2005 Motorcycle News report as an off-road-oriented machine combining a KTM supermoto-based rear end with a Brudeli-designed front end.

What is the Brudeli Leanster?

The Leanster is not a conventional rigid three-wheeler. Its two front wheels are part of a leaning suspension arrangement, while the single rear wheel provides drive. The defining idea is that the vehicle can bank through a turn in a motorcycle-like way despite having three wheels.

Motorcycle News reported in 2005 that the 625L could “still lean in to bends like it only has two wheels.” That is a contemporary publication’s description, not a modern road-test finding. The report characterized the 625L as off-road-oriented and said its lean system was not linked to steering angle in the way that report said some other multi-wheel concepts were.

How does the three-wheel Leanster lean?

Brudeli’s patent describes a driven rear wheel and two front wheels supported by upper and lower transverse bars. A transfer frame and spring connections link the front suspension arrangement to the vehicle frame. As the vehicle banks, the transfer-frame geometry changes, allowing the front wheels and chassis to participate in the lean rather than keeping the vehicle upright like a conventional trike.

The patent explains that a vehicle’s centre of gravity normally moves along an arc as it banks, with the arc’s centre at ground level. It describes the transfer-frame arrangement as a way to influence that movement. Its stated aims include managing centre-of-gravity movement, reducing the effort needed to right the vehicle, and maintaining ground clearance while leaned over. These are design objectives in patent documents, not measured results for handling, braking, stability, or safety. The corresponding European patent describes the same broad arrangement.

What was distinctive about the Brudeli 625L?

The 2005 Motorcycle News account identifies the 625L’s rear end as based on a KTM supermoto and its front end as designed by Brudeli. It also notes wide footboards that remained level with the ground while the vehicle leaned. The magazine said this could “potentially” make the machine hard to fall off; that qualified period observation should not be read as proof that the Leanster cannot fall or is safer than another vehicle.

A July 2007 Cycle World index entry titled “The Lean Three” describes the 625L as intended for on-road and off-road use. The accessible index confirms that period coverage, but does not provide enough detail to establish further specifications.

What is the difference between the 625L and 654L?

The 625L is the model for which the available period reporting and patent context are clearest. A secondary motorcycle-specification database’s search-result text describes the 654L as a refined successor shown at Intermot in 2008 and based around a KTM 690 Supermoto. Without a primary model brochure or similarly strong confirmation, that chronology and specification should be treated as provisional rather than a complete, verified model history.

The available sources do not establish a full year-by-year specification list for either model. They also do not establish production totals or current vehicle and parts availability.

How does it relate to Yamaha’s leaning multi-wheel vehicles?

Yamaha uses “LMW” as its designation for vehicles with three or more wheels that can lean like a motorcycle through turns. That terminology is useful context for the broader category, but Yamaha’s TRITOWN design page does not identify TRITOWN as a Brudeli product or make it an equivalent production model. Any comparison should distinguish the vehicles’ wheel layouts, front-wheel mechanisms, intended use, documented availability, and the strength of evidence for performance claims.

Can you still buy a Brudeli Leanster?

The available sources do not confirm whether a Leanster can currently be bought, nor whether model-specific replacement parts, service materials, or accessories are available. A buyer would need to verify the individual vehicle’s provenance, condition, documentation, and access to specialist maintenance directly with a seller before treating an example as usable or supportable.
