In a T3 interview, G Line Design Lead Tom Kerr described the aim as a bike that “looks like a Brompton, it folds like a Brompton, but it definitely doesn’t ride like a Brompton.” That is a design goal, not a claim that the G Line suits every rider or every trail.
What did Tom Kerr mean by “rides like nothing else”?
The title phrase is T3’s headline wording. In the interview’s body, Kerr put it this way: “The way I like to talk about it is that it looks like a Brompton, it folds like a Brompton, but it definitely doesn’t ride like a Brompton.” He also summarized the brief as giving riders a “‘big bike’ feel while still offering the portability you expect from a Brompton.” T3’s interview with Tom Kerr
The contrast is between the familiar folding concept and a changed riding platform. Brompton says the G Line uses new geometry and 20-inch wheels while retaining the original Brompton fold. The company’s account of development says it took eight years of testing, breaking and rapid iteration; the year of that claim is not stated on its R&D page. It is useful context for the engineering ambition, not independent evidence of comparative performance.
What makes the G Line different from a smaller-wheel Brompton?
The G Line is a distinct format in Brompton’s range rather than simply a standard small-wheel model with different tyres. Its 20-inch wheels and revised geometry are the central changes relevant to ride character. Brompton’s chooser positions the G Line as its large-wheel, full-size-feel option and the C Line as a compact-wheel city bike; the practical choice depends on whether ride feel and mixed surfaces outweigh the needs of carrying and storing a particularly compact folder. These figures describe the non-electric G Line. Brompton’s US overview says it has tested the bike for 155,000 miles, while its US and UK product pages each cite 250,000 km of testing. Those are separate manufacturer-reported figures, stated in different places and units; they should not be combined or read as independent comparative results. Can the G Line ride on gravel?
Brompton UK lists gravel paths, towpaths, asphalt and well-maintained off-road routes as suitable terrain. That supports describing it as a mixed-surface folding bike; it does not establish suitability for technical trails or make it a mountain bike. Terrain, rider skill and conditions matter, and Brompton’s own wording is the appropriate boundary for the claim. The US listing names Schwalbe G-One All Round tyres and describes them as puncture-resistant; check the exact tyre size and fit before buying replacements. Does the larger ride format undermine the fold?
The fold remains part of the design, but “folding” does not mean the same packed dimensions across every Brompton. The UK G Line listing gives a folded size of 72 × 67 × 41 cm and minimum weight of 14.8 kg, so compare those measurements with the actual space available under a desk, in a hallway, on a train or in a car. The G Line also has a front luggage system, rear roller rack and fork mounts. Check Brompton’s compatibility guidance for any specific bag or accessory before purchase. Is the Brompton G Line electric?
There are two distinct models. The specifications above are for the non-electric G Line. Brompton’s separate Electric G Line uses e-Motiq pedal assistance and has four gears; Brompton lists weight from 42.9 lb including battery and a claimed range of up to 55 miles. The weight and range are manufacturer figures for the electric model, and range is not a guaranteed real-world distance. Brompton says its electric bikes are independently certified to UL 2849. Which G Line size should you choose?
Brompton offers the G Line in three sizes, but the product-page text available here does not establish a complete height-to-size table. Use Brompton’s current sizing information and, if possible, arrange a test ride rather than inferring a size from the number of options. Brompton directs prospective buyers to its stores and authorized retailers. Brompton UK G Line product page
Who is the G Line for?
The G Line makes most sense for someone who wants a Brompton-style fold but prioritizes a larger-wheel ride platform and the manufacturer’s stated mixed-surface use. It may be a less natural fit for a buyer whose overriding requirement is the smallest, lightest package for frequent carrying or tight storage. Compare the folded measurements against your route and storage constraints, check fit, and consider a test ride: the G Line’s defining proposition is a change in riding character, not a universal upgrade over compact-wheel Brompton models.
