The reported deadlock is between Stellantis and Unifor over Canadian bargaining and production commitments, with Brampton Assembly at its center. As of Unifor’s October 6, 2026 update, the union was proceeding with strike-authorization votes—not reporting that a strike had begun. The plant has been idle since December 2023, according to Unifor, but the available accounts do not establish a final closure decision or a production shutdown caused by this dispute.
What is the Stellantis–Unifor deadlock about?
Unifor began bargaining with Stellantis on September 1, 2026, for more than 9,000 Canadian workers. The union had set September 11 as its target for a tentative agreement. After ten days of bargaining, Unifor said the parties had reached an impasse, identifying Brampton Assembly’s future as a central issue. It also said Stellantis had not confirmed forecasted plans for Windsor Assembly and Etobicoke Casting Plant.
Unifor characterized the company’s position as making completion of the wider pattern settlement conditional on an agreement to close Brampton. The union rejected that condition. Its September 24 membership update said the same condition applied to the pattern settlement for workers at Windsor, Etobicoke, Mississauga and Red Deer. These are Unifor’s accounts of bargaining; a detailed Stellantis account of the impasse was not available in the statements cited here. Read Unifor’s September 24 update.
Has a strike started?
No strike had been reported in Unifor’s October 6 update. The union said it was proceeding with strike-authorization votes. Such a vote gives the bargaining committee authority to call a strike if necessary; it does not itself mean workers are on strike or guarantee that one will occur. Unifor’s auto news listing carries the October 6 update.

What is happening at Brampton Assembly?
Unifor says Brampton Assembly has been idled since December 2023, with more than 2,200 Local 1285 members on layoff. In its August 14, 2026 statement, the union said the plant had been retooling for Jeep Compass electric SUV production, that retooling was paused in February 2025, and that Stellantis announced in October 2025 that future Compass production would move to the United States. As of August 14, Unifor said it had not received formal written notice of a plant closure.
Those statements distinguish an idle plant and a union-reported lack of formal closure notice from a confirmed closure decision. They also explain why Brampton’s future is central to negotiations: the plant’s workers remain on layoff while the planned production path has changed, according to the union. The bargaining dispute should not be described as having caused Brampton’s existing idle status, which began in December 2023.

Why does “Chrysler’s last car” refer to Brampton?
The phrase points to a specific production milestone, not the end of Chrysler as a vehicle brand. WardsAuto reported that the final 2023 Chrysler 300C rolled off Brampton’s line on December 8, 2023. That makes the 300C a marker in the plant’s history; it does not show that Chrysler currently has only one vehicle or that the 300C remains in production.
Stellantis’s July 30, 2026 second-quarter report still lists the Chrysler Pacifica in its sales results: U.S. Pacifica retail sales rose 7% year over year in Q2 2026. That is a sales figure, not a production count. In the same report, Stellantis said North American sales increased 6% year over year in the quarter.

Does the deadlock mean Stellantis production has stopped?
The available information establishes a bargaining impasse and strike-authorization votes, not a dispute-related production stoppage. Stellantis’s Q2 report said the company expected second-half performance to be weighted toward Q4 after a Q3 summer production shutdown. That seasonal shutdown outlook is separate from the labor dispute; the report does not attribute it to the negotiations or quantify a production effect at Brampton, Windsor or Etobicoke.
Stellantis also reported approximately €22.2 billion in second-half 2025 charges associated with its business reset in a February 6, 2026 announcement. That is broad corporate context, not evidence that the charges caused the Canadian bargaining deadlock.

What is confirmed, and what remains unsettled?
- Confirmed in Unifor’s public account: bargaining began September 1; the union reported an impasse on September 11; and the union was proceeding with strike-authorization votes on October 6.
- Reported by Unifor about Brampton: the plant has been idle since December 2023, more than 2,200 Local 1285 members are on layoff, retooling was paused, and the union had not received formal written closure notice as of August 14, 2026.
- Not established by the cited material: a strike, a final closure agreement or decision, a confirmed resolution of the bargaining dispute, or a quantified effect of the dispute on vehicle output.
- Company-reported market context: Stellantis reported Q2 2026 sales changes, but those figures do not establish plant production levels or explain the bargaining impasse.
Unifor National President Lana Payne described the union’s focus at the start of bargaining as “Stellantis’ commitment to Canada, and what that looks like” and “positioning our members for the future.” The status of negotiations and plant plans is time-sensitive; the statements above reflect the dates attached to each account.
