In the U.S., AAA’s broad planning range for replacing brake pads is $150–$350 per axle, or $300–$700 for both axles. If rotors also need replacement, AAA puts pads and rotors at $250–$500 per axle. A separate RepairPal estimator, last updated September 3, 2026, gives an average of $335–$394, excluding taxes, fees, and location-specific pricing. These are different estimates, not one guaranteed price; a written quote for your vehicle and location is the best guide to your actual total.
What does brake pad replacement usually cost?
For a U.S. budget, AAA lists $150–$350 per axle for pads and $300–$700 when both front and rear axles are serviced. If rotors also need replacement, AAA lists $250–$500 per axle for pads and rotors. AAA’s page does not state a publication date; these figures were accessed October 7, 2026. AAA’s brake-pad cost guide describes these as broad ranges, not a vehicle-specific quote.
RepairPal’s U.S. estimator gives a separate average of $335–$394, with estimated parts of $213–$215 and labor of $122–$179. Its estimate was last updated September 3, 2026, and excludes taxes, fees, and your unique location. It should not be merged with AAA’s per-axle ranges: the sources present different estimates and scopes. Check RepairPal’s estimator for its current estimate.
As secondary corroboration, commercial repair provider Direct Brakes lists $150–$300 per axle for pads only and $300–$600 per axle for pads and rotors in a guide updated February 2026. Its figures are another provider’s ranges, not a universal rate. Direct Brakes’ 2026 cost guide provides that comparison.

What does “per axle” include?
An axle quote covers the two wheels at the front or the two at the rear. RepairPal describes pad replacement as a paired job: pads are replaced on both wheels of the axle, rather than just one wheel. Ask whether a quote is for one axle or both; “brake pads” alone does not make that scope clear.
Do rotors need to be replaced with brake pads?
Not automatically. A shop should inspect the rotors and determine whether they can be resurfaced or should be replaced. Worn pads can score rotors, and rotor condition can add parts and labor to the repair. Ask what the shop found and what supports any rotor-related line item rather than assuming either that rotors always need replacement or that they never do.

Why can two quotes differ?
The final price depends on the vehicle, local labor costs, parts and materials, and the repair’s scope. Larger vehicles may use larger or more expensive pads. Whether rotors or related parts are included also changes the total. A low headline price may cover only pads on one axle, while another estimate may include rotors, labor, or fees.

- Is this price for one axle or both front and rear axles?
- Does it include pads only, or pads and rotors?
- If rotors are included, what measurements or visible condition justify replacing them?
- Are hardware or wear sensors included if this vehicle requires them?
- Are labor, taxes, fees, and related work included in the total?
- Does the estimate match my exact vehicle and location?
AAA says a standard professional pad replacement can take about an hour per axle. Rotor replacement or brake-line bleeding can extend the shop visit to two or three hours; visit time is not itself a price estimate.
Which brake-pad material should you choose?
Material affects cost, noise, dust, wear, and performance under load. The vehicle maker’s specification and your driving use should guide the choice; no material is best for every car.

- Organic/NAO: Non-asbestos pads are generally quiet and budget-oriented for light everyday use, but their softer compound tends to wear faster.
- Semi-metallic: These combine metal with other materials and offer strong stopping and heat resistance for heavy-duty use, hauling, or performance driving. They can produce more dust and wear rotors more.
- Ceramic: AAA describes ceramic pads as smooth, quiet, and low-dust, but more expensive. Confirm they suit your vehicle’s specifications and intended use.
When comparing parts or estimates, verify year, make, model, trim, axle, and any required sensors or hardware. A parts purchase is not the same as a professionally installed repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you have the brakes inspected?
AAA lists squealing or grinding while braking, vibration as you slow down, a soft or changed pedal feel, altered parking-brake resistance, and an ABS or other maintenance warning light as reasons to arrange an inspection. These symptoms can have different causes across the braking system; none by itself confirms that the pads are the part that needs replacement.

AAA gives a general pad lifespan range of 30,000–80,000 miles, with braking habits, environment, and pad material among the factors that affect wear. Treat that as a broad range, not a fixed replacement schedule. Follow your vehicle’s maintenance guidance and have brake condition assessed when needed. Because brakes are safety-critical, AAA recommends an ASE-certified professional for the combined pads-and-rotors work described in its guide; RepairPal likewise recommends a certified repair shop.
