Brad Pitt is not returning to real-world Formula One racing. In the first teaser for F1, he plays Sonny Hayes, a fictional former driver who gets another chance in the sport. Formula 1 unveiled the teaser ahead of the 2024 British Grand Prix; the film went on to open theatrically in 2025.
What the first F1 teaser showed
Formula 1 announced the teaser reveal for July 7, 2024, ahead of the British Grand Prix. The sport’s corporate report says the first-look teaser aired in Formula 1’s global feed before the race. It introduced the film’s central premise: a former driver’s return to the grid and a struggling team’s bid for a breakthrough.

In the story, Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, while Damson Idris plays rookie Joshua Pearce. They are teammates at APXGP, a fictional Formula One team. How closely the film worked with Formula 1
The production was made with the involvement of the Formula 1 community, including teams, drivers, the FIA and race promoters. The official teaser description says filming took place during actual Grand Prix weekends. That establishes access to real race events; it does not mean every racing scene or image in the film is documentary footage.

Joseph Kosinski directed the film. Jerry Bruckheimer produced it with other partners, including Lewis Hamilton’s Dawn Apollo Films banner. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, was part of the project’s production team. Apple’s release announcement Warner Bros.’ official teaser
When F1 came out and how it performed
Apple announced a June 27, 2025 theatrical release in North America. Its release information gave June 25, 2025 for international markets, so the dates differed by region. The teaser was therefore a 2024 announcement for a film that arrived the following year. Apple TV Press
Apple’s current F1 film page says the movie surpassed $630 million at the global box office. Apple does not give a separate accounting date alongside that figure on the page, so it is best read as Apple’s currently reported total rather than a dated audited figure.

What director Joseph Kosinski said about Sonny Hayes
Kosinski described the story as an underdog narrative centered on an aging driver seeking one last achievement. As quoted by The Associated Press, he said: “It’s a story about a last place team, a group of underdogs, and Sonny Hayes in his later years having one more chance to do something he was never able to, which is win a race in F1.” The Associated Press interview
