Bosch’s model-year 2024 smart-system lineup brought together a compact drive unit for lighter e-bikes, a larger navigation display, app-customizable screens and new control and shifting options. These are documented Bosch announcements—not a ranking of the best innovations across the e-bike industry.
What Bosch announced for model year 2024
In June 2023, Bosch eBike Systems announced an expanded modular smart-system portfolio for light eMTBs, eGravel and eUrban bikes, as well as city and trekking bikes. The model-year label matters: the announcement describes products and integrations for 2024 model-year bikes; it does not mean every feature first appeared during calendar year 2024. Bosch’s announcement is the basis for the features below.
The releases establish what Bosch said it was adding to its own system. They do not provide independent, cross-brand testing or a method for naming an industry-wide “top” innovation.
What is the Performance Line SX?
Performance Line SX is Bosch’s compact drive unit designed for light eMTBs, eGravel bikes and eUrban bikes. Bosch lists maximum torque of 55 Nm and a drive-unit weight of about 2 kg. Those are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from an independent comparison. Bosch’s Performance Line SX announcement describes the unit and intended bikes.

Battery and range-extender pairing
Bosch pairs SX with the 400 Wh CompactTube 400 battery and offers a 250 Wh PowerMore 250 range extender for compatible configurations. Bosch’s stated range increase concerns the specified pairing; it should not be converted into a universal distance estimate because actual range depends on the bike and riding conditions.
A cited SX system combination—drive unit, CompactTube 400, Mini Remote and System Controller—weighs about 4 kg according to Bosch. That figure is for those listed components, not a complete e-bike.

A range extender is not a universal add-on. Whether PowerMore 250 can be fitted depends on the bike’s Bosch smart-system configuration and the bicycle manufacturer’s implementation. Check the exact bike model and its manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying or attempting installation.
What is new about the Kiox 500 display?
Kiox 500 has a 2.8-inch diagonal colour screen. Bosch says it is about 40 percent larger than the Kiox 300 display and can provide acoustic navigation cues. These are Bosch’s product descriptions, not independent usability findings. See Bosch’s smart-system announcement.

Bosch also says Kiox 300 and Kiox 500 screen content can be customized through the eBike Flow app from model year 2024. A display’s availability and fit still depend on the e-bike’s smart-system configuration; confirm compatibility for the specific bicycle rather than assuming either display works with every e-bike.
Other additions to Bosch’s smart system
- Purion 200: Bosch named this control unit among the additions to the smart-system portfolio.
- Active Line and Active Line Plus: Bosch announced their integration into the smart system.
- eShift: The announcement included eShift for hub gears.
The announcement does not establish that every listed feature is compatible with every Bosch-equipped bike. Product timing and compatibility vary by system and bicycle implementation, so check the bike manufacturer’s specifications.

How to judge whether these innovations matter for your ride
- Choose by riding style: SX is positioned for lighter eMTBs, gravel bikes and urban bikes. Bosch’s announcement also covers city and trekking applications elsewhere in its broader portfolio.
- Consider the whole system: Compare drive-unit weight alongside battery capacity and the weight of the bicycle; the roughly 4 kg figure applies only to Bosch’s named component combination.
- Check the battery plan: The CompactTube 400 and PowerMore 250 figures describe capacities, not a guaranteed riding distance. Verify that the particular bike supports the range extender.
- Match the interface to your preferences: Kiox 500 offers the larger screen and acoustic navigation cues; screen customization through eBike Flow is described for Kiox 300 and Kiox 500 on model-year 2024 systems.
- Verify before purchasing components: Confirm the exact smart-system configuration with the bike manufacturer, especially for displays, controls, batteries and range extenders.
What the 2024 announcement does—and does not—show
Bosch’s official materials support a feature-level account of its model-year 2024 smart-system developments. They do not establish that these were the best e-bike innovations industry-wide, that Bosch outperformed competitors, or that every named product remains available for purchase today. Availability, compatible models and current prices require checking with manufacturers or retailers for the relevant market and date.
