The Boeing 747-8 registered N458BJ reportedly made just 16 flights, totaling about 30 hours, before it was eventually scrapped. But it was not discarded straight after those flights: the aircraft spent years parked near Basel, Switzerland, after the Saudi royal it was intended for died before delivery and its planned luxury interior was never installed. In 2022, Boeing bought it back; it was later flown to Pinal Airpark in Arizona, where a 2026 report described it being scrapped.
What was the 747-8 N458BJ?
N458BJ was a Boeing 747-8 intended for conversion into a Boeing Business Jet—a private aircraft configured for VIP use—not an ordinary passenger jet retired from airline service. It was designated for Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, but he died in 2011, months before the aircraft’s planned delivery, according to CNN’s account republished by KTVZ.
The jet never received its proposed luxury cabin. CNN’s account says its first test flight was in May 2012 and its official delivery followed in June 2012. The 747-8 is a very large aircraft, but general figures for the type do not describe N458BJ’s unfinished interior: it was not a completed luxury jet.
How did it fly only 16 times?
Reports put N458BJ’s total at 16 flights and about 30 hours, with its early flying described as testing. Those figures are reported totals, not a published flight-log record. The count also needs context: the aircraft later made a long ferry flight from Europe to Arizona, and accounts may differ in how they count flights or hours. The available reporting does not establish a definitive, independently audited total.

After its delivery, the aircraft spent years parked near Basel, Switzerland. With its VIP conversion unfinished and no buyer emerging, it remained in storage rather than entering regular passenger or private service.
Why was the aircraft difficult to sell?
A buyer would have needed to take on both the cost of completing the aircraft and the challenge of operating a four-engine private jet. Richard Aboulafia, an aviation analyst at AeroDynamic Advisory, described the narrow market to CNN: “No one apart from a Saudi head of state is going to want a private, four-engine business jet.” That is his market assessment, not a formal sales finding.

Connor Diver, a senior analyst at Cirium, estimated in 2023 that completing the aircraft could cost $30 million to $50 million, as quoted by Futurism. This was an analyst estimate, not a documented refurbishment bid or the final cost of the aircraft’s eventual disposal.

- Years in storage: After the planned VIP conversion and sale failed to materialize, N458BJ remained parked near Basel.
- Boeing buyback: CNN’s 2023 account says Boeing bought the aircraft back from Aircraft Finance Germany in 2022.
- Flight to Pinal Airpark: The jet was subsequently flown from Europe to Pinal Airpark in Arizona.
- Dismantling and scrapping: In 2023, reporting described it as being stripped for parts or stored at Pinal. Diver said he had seen pictures showing the engines removed at that time. A later, on-site Atlantic report from 2026 described the Saudi-intended 747 there as being scrapped. The available account does not give a precise date when dismantling was completed.
The later account updates the 2023 descriptions: the aircraft’s arrival and initial dismantling were not the whole story, and the available reporting does not support a claim that it was scrapped immediately after its 16 reported flights.

Was this Boeing’s last 747?
No. N458BJ’s fate is separate from the end of 747 production. Boeing delivered its final 747, built for Atlas Air, in January 2023, according to Futurism. The Atlantic reports that 1,574 Boeing 747s were built across the type’s production history; that figure is about the broader aircraft family, not N458BJ.
