BMW’s inline-six history reaches from the company’s early aircraft-engine business to today’s high-performance M cars—but it is a history of changing applications, not one engine design carried forward unchanged. The documented early milestone is the BMW IIIa, a six-cylinder inline aero engine developed in 1917; the modern endpoint in the sources is BMW M’s S58 production engine.
Where BMW’s six-cylinder story began
BMW’s origins are closely tied to aviation, although the company’s corporate beginnings involved more than one business. Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) was established in 1916, and Rapp Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH in 1917. BMW treats BFW’s founding date, 7 March 1916, as its official founding date. These milestones provide context for BMW’s early aero-engine work; they do not mean that the modern car-engine business began with a single uninterrupted design lineage.
The BMW IIIa and high-altitude flight
BMW chief designer Max Friz developed the BMW IIIa in 1917. BMW Group’s 2016 anniversary publication describes it as a six-cylinder inline aircraft engine designed for high-altitude performance. It lists a 19-litre displacement and a peak output of 185 hp. The publication also notes aluminium pistons and a special altitude carburettor, which allowed pilots to adjust the fuel mixture to changing oxygen conditions.
Those details show the specific problem the engine was meant to address: aircraft operation at altitude. They should not be read as evidence that its components or engineering design passed directly into later BMW road-car engines.

Why the early aircraft-engine era was not a straight line
BMW Group Classic says the company’s early engines included six-cylinder inline aero engines and that aero-engine production stopped after the First World War. BMW’s company history describes a shift to railway brakes and inboard engines after wartime restrictions. That interruption matters: the story is one of a company working in different fields over time, not a BMW inline-six design that simply continued from wartime aircraft into modern M cars.
The sources establish the 1917 aircraft-engine milestone and a modern performance-engine endpoint, but not a complete, generation-by-generation technical history of BMW’s road-car sixes in between. “A century” is therefore best understood as a broad span of BMW history across changing programs and uses—not a claim that one engine persisted unchanged for a hundred years.

The modern high-performance endpoint: BMW M’s S58
BMW M identifies the S58 as its current high-performance production inline-six and lists it in the M2, M3, M4, X3 M and X4 M. Its stated outputs vary by model and configuration: BMW M’s overview ranges from 480 hp in basic models to 550 hp in the M4 CS example. Those figures describe the listed applications, not one universal S58 rating.
Launch-era M3 and M4 figures
BMW Group PressClub Canada’s 2020 launch material gives a useful, specifically bounded comparison for the M3 and M4: the cited base specification was rated at 473 hp and 406 lb-ft, while the Competition specification was rated at 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. These are launch-era figures for the Canadian-market announcement, not current specifications for every market or later model year.

How to compare the aircraft engine with today’s M engines
The most meaningful comparison is about what each engine was developed to do and where it was used. The BMW IIIa was an aircraft engine with documented features aimed at high-altitude operation. The S58 is a production road-car engine used across several BMW M models, with output varying according to the vehicle and configuration. The available figures do not form a consistent series across every intervening BMW inline-six generation, so they cannot establish a continuous technical progression or support a complete numerical comparison of the century.
BMW’s own description of its development approach is application-led. In a 2014 M3/M4 announcement, Albert Biermann, then head of development, said: “When developing a new model we first think about what requirements the vehicle will be expected to meet, and then decide which concepts and technologies will best meet these goals,” This helps frame the aircraft and M-car examples without suggesting that they shared one unchanged engine concept.

What BMW announced about M Ignite
BMW announced M Ignite, a pre-chamber combustion development for S58 engines in the M2, M3 and M4, with a planned debut in mid-2026 tied to Euro 7 requirements. That was the timing in the announcement; it does not by itself establish that the technology has since reached every named model. The cited material does not confirm its rollout status as of October 2026.

What the century-long view does—and does not—show
- It shows a documented early milestone: BMW developed a six-cylinder inline aircraft engine for high-altitude performance in 1917.
- It shows a real break in the early company story: BMW Group Classic says aero-engine production stopped after the First World War, followed by work in other fields described in BMW’s company history.
- It shows a modern performance application: BMW M identifies the S58 as a high-performance production inline-six used in several M models, with model-specific outputs.
- It does not establish an uninterrupted technical lineage: the sources cited here do not trace every road-car generation or show that the BMW IIIa directly evolved into the S58.
