The BMW Z4 Roadster has three generations: E85 (first shown in 2002), E89 (introduced in 2008) and G29 (premiered in 2018). The easiest way to tell them apart is the roof: the E85 has a fabric soft top, the E89 a powered retractable hardtop, and the G29 a powered fabric soft top. Within those generations, the notable checkpoints are the E89’s 2013 refresh and the G29’s 2023 equipment changes and 2024 manual M40i editions.
BMW Z4 generations at a glance
| Generation | Key dates | Roof | Defining changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| E85 | Premiered in autumn 2002 | Fabric soft top | First Z4 Roadster, with the Z4 M Roadster at the top of the generation’s range. |
| E89 | Introduced in December 2008; refreshed in 2013 | Two-section electro-hydraulic retractable hardtop | More cabin headroom and elbow room, and the first Z4 to use iDrive. |
| G29 | Premiered in August 2018; U.S. launch followed in 2019 | Powered fabric soft top | New body, chassis, suspension and engines; driver-focused cabin and modern assistance and connectivity equipment. |
These are generation-level landmarks, not a complete specification list. BMW’s launch announcements describe particular markets and dates; equipment, engines, transmissions and model-year timing can differ by country. For an individual car, check its build date, VIN, market-specific equipment list and service records.
E85: the first Z4 Roadster (2002–2008 era)
What changed from the Z3
BMW presented the Z4 in autumn 2002 as the successor to the Z3. Its design emphasized a long hood, short trunk, low seating position and 50:50 weight distribution. BMW identified the Z4 M Roadster as the range-topper of this generation. These details describe the generation’s design and range hierarchy; they do not establish that every feature or specification applied in every market or model year. BMW’s Z4 history recounts the model’s generational milestones.
The Coupé joined the family
BMW added a two-seat Z4 Coupé in 2006, four years after the Roadster’s reveal. It is useful context for the E85 family, but it is a separate body style from the Roadster covered here. BMW’s 2022 model-history release notes the Coupé’s arrival.

E89: the hardtop generation (introduced 2008)
A different roof and a roomier cabin
The E89’s signature change was its standard, two-section electro-hydraulic retractable hardtop. BMW said the roof opened or closed in 20 seconds in a 2025 history recap. With the roof concept came increased cabin headroom and elbow room, plus iDrive in a Z4 for the first time. BMW’s launch material described the E89 as succeeding both the previous Roadster and Coupé. BMW’s history recap gives the roof timing, while its 2008 launch kit documents the launch-era changes.
The 2013 refresh
BMW announced an E89 refresh for 2013, including exterior changes, interior refinements, a Hyper Orange design package and ConnectedDrive features. The U.S. announcement said refreshed cars would arrive in showrooms in spring 2013. This was a mid-generation update, not a new Z4 generation, and the announcement does not mean every listed feature was available in all countries or on every car. BMW’s U.S. 2013 announcement sets out those changes.

G29: the return to a fabric roof (premiered 2018)
Launch changes
BMW premiered the G29 in August 2018. It returned to a powered fabric soft top and introduced a new body, chassis, front and rear suspension, and engines. BMW described its cabin as driver-focused and highlighted updated assistance and connectivity equipment. In the U.S. launch announcement, BMW listed the sDrive30i at 255 hp and the 2020 M40i at 382 hp, along with 50:50 weight distribution and a shortened wheelbase. Those power figures are U.S. launch specifications, not universal figures for all markets or model years. BMW’s 2019 U.S. launch announcement provides the regional figures and launch details.
Model year 2023: equipment and design checkpoint
For model year 2023, BMW said M Sport exterior features became standard on four-cylinder models. It also removed the Advantage, Sport Line and M Sport lines from the structure, while adding choices including colors, 19-inch wheels and M lights Shadow Line. This is a useful G29 update checkpoint, but BMW’s global press material does not establish that every item or configuration applied identically in every country. BMW’s 2022 release describes the changes.

From 2024: manual M40i editions
BMW announced a manual-transmission M40i offering from 2024, under names including Edition Handschalter or Pure Impulse Edition depending on market. Confirm the country, exact model year and edition before treating a particular car as a factory manual M40i; the announcement is not evidence that the configuration was offered everywhere. BMW’s history and edition information covers the market-dependent naming.
Final Edition and planned end of production
On 25 November 2025, BMW announced a Z4 Final Edition M40i and said production was planned for February through April 2026, marking the planned end of production. BMW’s U.S. announcement listed a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic for the edition. An announced production schedule is not confirmation that production has been completed, that cars are in inventory, or that either configuration is currently available. Check local BMW information for current status. BMW’s Final Edition announcement provides the plan and U.S. details.

How to identify the right generation and update phase
Start with the roof
- E85: conventional fabric soft top.
- E89: powered retractable hardtop, divided into two sections.
- G29: powered fabric soft top.
Roof design is the quickest generation-level distinction. When evaluating a used car, operate the mechanism and assess its condition rather than inferring reliability from the design alone.
Use the cabin and technology as a second check
The E89 added cabin headroom and elbow room and brought iDrive to the Z4 for the first time. BMW describes the G29 as driver-focused, with updated assistance and connectivity equipment. Specific systems and trim equipment depend on market, model year and options, so verify the equipment on the car rather than relying on a generation label.

Match the badge, year and market before comparing powertrains
Do not compare engine or transmission claims without identifying the exact badge, market, model year and gearbox. BMW’s U.S. G29 launch figures are tied to that announcement and its stated model years; the manual M40i was announced for named editions from 2024, with market-dependent naming and availability.
Check the actual car’s history
BMW’s model-history announcements establish chronology and manufacturer-published specifications, not used-car reliability rankings. For a purchase, check the VIN and build date, market-specific equipment, maintenance records, roof operation, accident history and mileage, and arrange a qualified inspection.
Production context
BMW reported more than 55,000 third-generation Z4s sold worldwide by 2022. That is a dated, manufacturer-reported cumulative figure, not a current total or an independently audited estimate. BMW’s 2022 UK release gives the figure. BMW’s later announcement of a planned 2026 production end is a separate status update; it should not be read as proof that production or sales have already ended.
