BMW plans to introduce its first fully electric M vehicles built on Neue Klasse technology in 2027. The announced BMW M eDrive layout uses four motors—one for each wheel—so the system can control torque at each corner. BMW has not confirmed a production model name or customer delivery date; the M Concept Neue Klasse previewing the technology is not intended for sale.
What BMW has announced—and what it has not
BMW describes the 2027 launch as the planned market introduction of its first M vehicles featuring Neue Klasse technology. That is a manufacturer target, not a confirmed delivery date for a named production car. BMW has not announced the production vehicle’s name, price, final specifications, or regional availability in the official material cited here. The M Concept Neue Klasse is a preview, not a production car offered for sale. BMW says the concept itself is not currently intended for sale, and its disclosed specifications should not be treated as a confirmed production-car specification.
How the four-motor drivetrain works
BMW says its M eDrive system is based on Neue Klasse Gen6 technology. It places two electric drive units across the car: one on the front axle and one on the rear. - LED driving lights: Just like a real vehicle in the special equipment, this model has a start-stop LED driving light. As soon as the model starts driving, the headlights light up brightly. When the car stops, the LED driving lights go out again. This function saves energy and increases the driving time of the model.
- Doors can be opened manually: On this model, the doors can be opened manually on both sides. Simply reach through the window opening and with a gentle pull you can open the doors and close them again in the same way.
That arrangement lets BMW’s software manage power at each wheel individually rather than relying only on a front-to-rear torque split. BMW M Dynamic Performance Control coordinates the drivetrain and braking functions with the Heart of Joy computer. BMW also describes Heart of Joy as one of four high-performance computers, or “Superbrains,” in the broader Neue Klasse electronics architecture; other computers handle automated driving, infotainment, and basic or comfort functions. Why BMW says the front axle can disconnect
BMW says the front axle can be fully decoupled. Its stated aim is to preserve a rear-wheel-focused driving character while improving efficiency and range on longer journeys. These are BMW’s descriptions of the system’s intended benefits, not independently measured results; the consulted material does not provide test figures for efficiency, range, acceleration, or lap times.

BMW also says the intended M experience will include predefined drive modes, simulated gear shifts, and a purpose-developed soundscape. Those are planned features described by the manufacturer, not independent evaluations of how the production car will perform or sound. BMW M’s article outlines these elements.
What the concept reveals about battery and voltage
The BMW M Concept Neue Klasse page specifies 800-volt technology and a high-voltage battery with energy content above 100 kWh. BMW describes the battery as using an M-optimized version of Gen6 cylindrical cells, with its housing integrated with the front and rear axles as a structural component. These details apply to the concept disclosure: BMW has not confirmed that every production model will carry the same final battery, voltage, or structural specification. How this differs from BMW’s current M Performance EVs
BMW already lists electric M Performance models, including the i4 M60 and i5 M60. They are separate from the forthcoming fully electric high-performance M vehicles based on Neue Klasse technology. The distinction matters: the new announcement concerns BMW’s planned electric M generation, not a rebranding of those existing M Performance cars. BMW’s M model overview lists the current range.

- Final motor output, battery capacity, range, charging performance, acceleration, and other production specifications.
- Price, regional availability, and a confirmed date when customers can take delivery.
- Whether the production vehicle will retain every feature and technical detail shown on the concept page.
BMW M managing director Franciscus van Meel framed the ambition as “outstanding, racetrack-ready driving dynamics for everyday use.” That is BMW’s stated goal for the new generation, not a measured production-car result. BMW Group PressClub USA published the statement on 13 January 2026.
