The U.S. BMW X5 generation lineup runs from E53 through E70, F15, G05, and the announced G65. The model-year ranges are 2000–2006, 2007–2013, 2014–2018, 2019–2026, and 2027 onward, respectively. The first X5 was produced and sold during late 1999, but it was a 2000 model in the United States.

This is a U.S. model-year guide. BMW model names, engine availability, emissions specifications, and sales dates can differ in other countries. A chassis code is usually more useful than a trim name when ordering parts, selecting a repair manual, or researching known issues.

The first production X5 left BMW Manufacturing’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant on September 1, 1999, and the vehicle went on sale in late 1999. BMW nevertheless introduced it in the United States as a 2000 model. BMW’s historical material describes the original X5 as launching for the 2000 model year, so a listing or article that calls it a “1999 X5” is generally referring to the build date, press activity, or early sales—not a separate U.S. model-year generation. First generation: E53, 2000–2006
The E53 was the original BMW X5 and the vehicle that established BMW’s “Sports Activity Vehicle” category. It was introduced as a 2000 model year in the United States, although production and sales began during calendar year 1999.
The early U.S. range included the V8-powered X5 4.4i, followed by an inline-six model. BMW later added higher-performance versions such as the 4.6is and 4.8is. Those engine and trim changes did not create new generations: every U.S. X5 from model years 2000 through 2006 belongs to the E53 family.

For DIY work, an E53 X5 service manual is the relevant type of reference: Bentley Publishers identifies its manual as covering 2000–2006 X5 models, including the 3.0i, 4.4i, 4.6is, and 4.8is. That does not make it suitable for an E70, F15, G05, or G65; match the manual to the chassis and model-year range before buying.

Safety research is particularly important with an E53. NHTSA identifies certain 2000–2004 X5 vehicles as subject to a Takata driver-airbag “do not drive” warning. The warning does not apply automatically to every X5 in those years, so check the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN in the official recall systems before driving or purchasing it. NHTSA provides the Takata “do not drive” information.
Second generation: E70, 2007–2013
The E70 replaced the E53 for the 2007 model year. It was larger and substantially reworked, but it remained a second-generation X5 throughout its U.S. run from 2007 through 2013. BMW produced 728,107 second-generation X5 vehicles at Spartanburg between September 2006 and June 2013, according to its 2007 X5 press material.

The 2011 update brought revised styling, new engines, the xDrive35i and xDrive50i, and continued availability of the xDrive35d diesel in the U.S. It was a significant mechanical and equipment change, but it was still an E70—not a third-generation X5. BMW’s production announcement documents the update and its continued E70 identity.
The E70 generation also includes the X5 M performance model. An M badge changes the performance specification, not the basic generation chronology. Recall research should likewise be done by VIN: NHTSA records multiple campaigns affecting portions of the 2007–2013 range, including Takata-airbag campaigns, rather than one recall that applies uniformly to every E70.

Third generation: F15, 2014–2018
BMW began production of the third-generation X5 in August 2013 and introduced it in the United States as a 2014 model. The F15 replaced the E70 for model year 2014 and continued through 2018. BMW’s third-generation production announcement confirms the timing.

Do not assume that every F15 has the same engine, emissions equipment, infotainment system, or drivetrain. The available diesel and plug-in-hybrid versions varied by market and model year. For a used F15, the VIN-specific build record is more reliable than a seller’s abbreviated trim description or a generic “2014–2018 X5” parts listing.
Fourth generation: G05, 2019–2026
The G05 is the fourth-generation X5. BMW launched it for the 2019 model year, with U.S. showroom arrival scheduled for November 10, 2018. The initial U.S. lineup included the X5 xDrive40i and xDrive50i. BMW’s 2019 X5 launch announcement identifies the G05 as the all-new fourth generation.

Is the 2024 X5 a new generation?
No. The 2024 X5 is a refreshed G05, not a fifth-generation vehicle. BMW’s update added revised exterior design, more standard equipment, updated digital technology, 48-volt mild-hybrid technology for relevant powertrains, and the X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. Production of the refreshed model began at Spartanburg in April 2023, but the underlying generation remained G05. BMW describes these changes in its 2024 X5 and X6 announcement.
That makes the practical G05 split 2019–2023 pre-refresh and 2024–2026 refreshed. It is a useful shopping distinction for equipment and powertrain research, but both groups are fourth-generation X5s.
Recall status still depends on the individual vehicle. BMW says owners should enter the 17-digit VIN in its recall system, and its recall information identifies certain 2023–2025 X5 vehicles as potentially affected by integrated-brake recall 24V-104. Use the BMW recall lookup rather than assuming that a particular G05 year is affected—or unaffected. BMW states that qualifying recall repairs are performed free of charge at authorized BMW Centers.
Fifth generation: G65, 2027 and later
BMW announced the fifth-generation X5 on June 30, 2026, using the G65 designation for the new U.S. lineup. As of August 12, 2026, it should be described as announced and upcoming, not as a completed ownership history with every variant already on sale.

BMW’s global announcement says series production is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with the first variants scheduled for market launch in late November 2026. The plug-in-hybrid and electric versions are scheduled to follow in early 2027. Timing and availability may vary by market.

The broader G65 family is expected to include internal-combustion, mild-hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, battery-electric, and later hydrogen-fuel-cell variants, subject to market timing. BMW describes the iX5 60 xDrive as the first fully electric X5 and gives its 435-mile range as an estimated preliminary figure—not a final EPA-certified result. Treat early specifications, prices, range figures, and delivery timing accordingly. The U.S. G65 and iX5 announcement is the appropriate reference for the announced rollout.
Because the first G65 vehicles are scheduled to reach the market near the end of calendar year 2026, a late-2026 production or sales date does not turn it into a 2026 model. The U.S. model-year label is 2027. Conversely, a 2026 X5 remains a G05 even if it was built close to the G65 changeover.
Facelift, powertrain, and performance terminology
Several labels can make X5 listings look more complicated than the generation chart really is:

A facelift or mid-generation update can change engines, electronics, bumpers, lights, suspension tuning, and standard equipment without changing the chassis generation. That is why a 2011 E70 and a 2010 E70 remain second generation, just as a 2024 G05 and a 2019 G05 remain fourth generation.

- Start with the U.S. model year. Use the title, registration, and VIN records—not only the date shown on a dealer listing. A vehicle built in one calendar year can be sold as the following model year.
- Match the year to the chassis table. E53 covers 2000–2006, E70 covers 2007–2013, F15 covers 2014–2018, and G05 covers 2019–2026.
- Confirm the VIN-specific build. Verify the engine, drivetrain, fuel type, hybrid equipment, seating configuration, installed options, and production date. Two X5s from the same generation can require different parts and service procedures.
- Check recalls by the complete 17-digit VIN. Use BMW’s recall system and, where appropriate, NHTSA’s lookup. Generation-level research cannot tell you whether an individual vehicle has an open campaign.
- Check the exact chassis before buying tools or manuals. An E53 manual is not a substitute for an E70, F15, or G05 reference. Likewise, an BMW-compatible OBD-II scanner may read basic diagnostic information while lacking coverage for certain BMW modules or functions. Confirm BMW-system support and model-year compatibility before purchase.
- Inspect the vehicle separately from its generation. A well-maintained example from an older generation can be a better purchase than a neglected newer one. Review service invoices, warning lights, fluid leaks, suspension behavior, electrical faults, and the results of an independent pre-purchase inspection.
Owners shopping for transport or interior-protection equipment should apply the same rule. A BMW X5 roof rack or cargo liner must be matched to the year, chassis, body configuration, and roof-rail design; “fits an X5” is not precise enough. BMW maintains a roof-and-storage accessory category and states that genuine BMW accessories carry a limited warranty subject to its terms.
