The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics stars in Mission: Impossible 4 – Ghost Protocol as the futuristic concept car supplied for Tom Cruise’s film. It was not simply a production BMW i8: the 2011 movie used the Vision EfficientDynamics prototype, which BMW later developed into the i8 production model.
BMW’s film announcements identify the vehicle as the Vision EfficientDynamics concept car and describe the BMW i8 as its forthcoming successor. The concept combined dramatic styling with a diesel-electric all-wheel-drive powertrain, making it both a movie prop and an early preview of BMW’s electrified performance-car strategy.
Key takeaways
- The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car is the futuristic BMW featured in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, not simply a production BMW i8.
- The Vision EfficientDynamics was a 2+2 plug-in full-hybrid concept with a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine and two electric motors.
- BMW’s 2009 concept figures included 356 hp, 800 Nm of torque, an anticipated 0–100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds, and approximately 50 km of electric-only range.
- The BMW i8 was the later production descendant of the Vision EfficientDynamics concept, but the two cars are not the same vehicle.
- Collectors can find documented 1:43, 1:64, and 1:14 scale-model versions of the Vision EfficientDynamics, although current stock and pricing require verification.
What BMW concept car did Tom Cruise drive in Ghost Protocol?
The BMW in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept, a futuristic prototype that BMW later developed into the i8. BMW’s official film announcement states that “One of the BMW vehicles provided for Tom Cruise ́s next film is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car,” while a later BMW release calls it the concept car for the forthcoming i8.
That distinction matters because the car seen on screen was not a production BMW i8. The Vision EfficientDynamics was a pre-production design and technology demonstrator. The film was released in 2011 as a PG-13 action/adventure thriller with a 133-minute runtime, according to Paramount’s official film page.

BMW described itself as the film’s main automotive partner and said that several BMW vehicles were supplied for the production. The Vision EfficientDynamics and BMW 6 Series Convertible were driven by Ethan Hunt and prominently featured in key action sequences, according to BMW’s November 2011 film-marketing release.
Why do people call the Ghost Protocol BMW an i8?
People call the movie car an i8 because the BMW i8 followed the Vision EfficientDynamics concept and retained much of its futuristic design direction. BMW’s own description of the BMW i sub-brand says, “The BMW i8, meanwhile, is based on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept study.”
BMW also described the BMW i8 Concept as the successor to the Vision EfficientDynamics car featured in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. The relationship is therefore evolutionary rather than identical: the Vision was the concept shown in the film, and the i8 was the later series-production model influenced by that concept.
| Question | Vision EfficientDynamics | BMW i8 |
|---|---|---|
| What was it? | A 2009 concept and technology demonstrator | A later production-oriented plug-in-hybrid sports car |
| Film identity | The BMW concept featured in Ghost Protocol | Not the exact vehicle shown in the film |
| Development status | Prototype with concept-car specifications | Engineered for series production |
| Design relationship | Original futuristic design study | Production descendant that carried the design and hybrid themes forward |
| Powertrain description | Three-cylinder turbodiesel plus two electric motors | A different production plug-in-hybrid configuration |
BMW’s official documentation connecting the two cars is summarized in its 2010 BMW i announcement. The safest identification is: the Ghost Protocol BMW is the Vision EfficientDynamics concept, the prototype ancestor of the BMW i8.

What was the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept?
The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics was a 2+2-seat plug-in full-hybrid concept unveiled by BMW in 2009. The concept combined a three-cylinder turbodiesel engine with two electric motors: the diesel engine and one electric motor powered the rear axle, while the second electric motor powered the front axle.
The arrangement allowed the concept to operate using electric power, diesel power, or a combination of the three power sources. It also provided an all-wheel-drive layout. BMW’s original 2009 Vision EfficientDynamics technical press material described the concept’s anticipated performance and efficiency figures.
How powerful was the Vision EfficientDynamics?
According to BMW Group’s 2009 technical press material, the Vision EfficientDynamics had an anticipated system output of 262 kW, or 356 hp, and anticipated maximum torque of 800 Nm, or 590 lb-ft. BMW quoted an anticipated 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 4.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h, or 155 mph.
| Specification | BMW’s published concept figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| System output | 262 kW / 356 hp | Anticipated manufacturer figure |
| Maximum torque | 800 Nm / 590 lb-ft | Anticipated manufacturer figure |
| 0–100 km/h | 4.8 seconds | Anticipated manufacturer figure |
| Top speed | 250 km/h / 155 mph | Electronically limited concept figure |
| Electric-only range | Approximately 50 km / 31 miles | BMW’s approximate concept estimate |
| Fuel consumption | 3.76 L/100 km | Claimed EU-cycle figure |
| CO2 emissions | 99 g/km | Claimed manufacturer figure |
| Drag coefficient | 0.22 | Claimed aerodynamic figure |
| Battery | 98 lithium-polymer cells | BMW-published concept detail |
These are historical BMW figures for a concept vehicle, not independent road-test results. The Vision EfficientDynamics specifications should not be transferred directly to every later BMW i8. BMW’s use of terms such as “anticipated” and “claimed” is important because a concept-car target is not the same as a certified production-car test result.

What did the Vision EfficientDynamics look like?
The Vision EfficientDynamics had the dramatic proportions expected of a movie prototype: a low roof, highly aerodynamic body, extensive lightweight construction, and gullwing-style doors. BMW described the cabin as a 2+2 layout rather than a conventional four-seat interior.
BMW’s U.S. technical description lists the concept at 181.1 inches long, 74.8 inches wide, and 48.8 inches high, with a stated curb weight of 3,076 pounds. Those dimensions and the concept’s low-slung body helped distinguish the Vision EfficientDynamics from ordinary BMW road cars of the period.
The concept’s visual details also explain why audiences often remember it as an i8. The sharply tapered body, unusual door openings, compact passenger cell, and emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency all anticipated the design language BMW later used for the i8. Visual continuity does not make the film car a production i8, however.
How did the Vision EfficientDynamics become the BMW i8?
The development path runs from the 2009 Vision EfficientDynamics concept, through BMW’s 2011 i8 development and film promotion, to the later production BMW i8.

- 2011: BMW supplied the Vision EfficientDynamics for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and presented the BMW Concept i8 as the next development step toward production.
- Later production period: BMW brought the concept’s low-slung design direction, lightweight engineering emphasis, and plug-in-hybrid performance idea into the production i8 family.
BMW’s later historical account describes the concept-to-i8 progression, while the company’s BMW i announcement establishes the direct technical and design relationship. The production i8 should therefore be described as the Vision EfficientDynamics’ successor or descendant—not as the exact car Tom Cruise drove in the film.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I buy a BMW Vision EfficientDynamics scale model car?
Collectors looking for the movie car can search for a BMW Vision EfficientDynamics scale model car rather than a generic BMW i8 model. Documented examples include a genuine BMW 1:43 white-and-blue model listed under BMW part number 80 42 2 225 391, a 1:64 model that a cited retailer marks as no longer available, and BMW lifestyle-catalog material describing a 1:14 remote-controlled model as well as a 1:43 model.
Availability, seller, price, scale, and condition can change, so a current listing should be checked before purchase. A BMW i8 model car is also relevant for readers who want the production descendant, but an i8 model should not be advertised as an exact replica of the Vision EfficientDynamics used in Ghost Protocol.
For identification, the most precise search terms are “BMW Vision EfficientDynamics scale model car,” “BMW Vision EfficientDynamics die-cast model,” and “1:43 BMW Vision EfficientDynamics model.” The documented model references come from a 1:43 genuine BMW model listing, a documented 1:64 model listing, and BMW’s BMW i Lifestyle catalog material. These references document the products; they do not confirm current marketplace stock.

Is the BMW from Ghost Protocol the same as the i8?
No. The BMW from Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept. The BMW i8 is the later production descendant based on that concept, with different production engineering and powertrain details.
The one-sentence answer is: Ghost Protocol featured the Vision EfficientDynamics concept, the prototype ancestor of the BMW i8—not the production BMW i8 itself.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The futuristic BMW in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car. BMW later developed that concept into the i8, which explains the common nickname, but the film vehicle was a prototype rather than a production i8.
