Apple CarPlay Ultra, announced by Apple on May 15, 2025, is a vehicle-integrated version of CarPlay that reaches the instrument cluster, combines iPhone and vehicle information, and exposes controls such as climate and performance settings. It requires an iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later and a factory-supported vehicle—not an adapter.

The phrase “just announced” needs a date correction: CarPlay Ultra has moved beyond Apple’s preview announcement and launched commercially with Aston Martin. Apple has also named Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as committed brands, but exact availability still depends on the vehicle, model year, trim, market, and software-update path.

This article uses August 14, 2026 as its research cutoff. The official sources establish the launch partner and announced brand commitments, but they do not provide one complete, current model-by-model compatibility table for every participating automaker.

Key takeaways

  • Apple announced CarPlay Ultra on May 15, 2025, and Aston Martin became the documented launch automaker; CarPlay Ultra is no longer only a preview.
  • CarPlay Ultra can extend beyond the center infotainment screen to the instrument cluster and other driver-facing displays, combining iPhone information with vehicle information.
  • CarPlay Ultra can expose climate, radio, audio, performance, and other vehicle-specific controls through the touchscreen, physical controls, or Siri.
  • CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later, plus a vehicle with the required factory integration.
  • Apple has named Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as committed brands, but the official sources reviewed do not establish a complete current model-, trim-, and market-level compatibility list.
  • A generic wireless CarPlay adapter can support ordinary CarPlay in some vehicles, but it cannot add CarPlay Ultra’s instrument-cluster and factory-vehicle integration.

What is Apple CarPlay Ultra?

Apple CarPlay Ultra is a next-generation CarPlay system designed with automakers rather than a simple projection of selected iPhone apps onto the center display. CarPlay Ultra is intended to use the vehicle’s center screen, instrument cluster, and other driver-facing displays while combining iPhone data such as Maps and media with vehicle data such as tire pressure and driver-assistance information. Apple’s launch announcement describes the experience and its initial rollout.

  • TRIPLE DASH CAM: This 3-channel dash camera features a 170° wide-angle front camera, a 150° cabin camera, and a 150° waterproof rear camera, effectively reducing visual blind spots. The IPS screen delivers a clear, blur-free image from any viewing angle.
  • G-SENSOR & PARKING MONITOR: Built-in G-sensor detects sudden vibrations or impacts while your car is parked, automatically triggering emergency recording and locking the footage to prevent overwriting.
  • LOOP RECORDING: When the storage limit is reached, the newest footage automatically overwrites the oldest recordings, so you never run out of space. Videos can be saved in 1 or 3 minute intervals. Plus, a 32GB SD card is included—no need to purchase one separately.
  • HDR TECHNOLOGY & NIGHT VISION: Equipped with 4 infrared LED lights, the cabin-facing camera captures clear footage even in low light conditions. Advanced HDR technology adjusts exposure across varying lighting situations to produce well-balanced images and video.
  • EASY INSTALLATION & OPERATION: This dash camera is plug-and-play—simply mount it on the windshield, connect the power, and you're ready to go. The intuitive display and user-friendly button layout make daily operation effortless for anyone.

CarPlay Ultra relies on the driver’s iPhone and operates wirelessly. CarPlay Ultra can appear when the vehicle’s displays turn on, while the vehicle’s own built-in system continues to power driving functions. The arrangement is deeper than ordinary phone projection because the automaker must connect CarPlay Ultra to the car’s displays, controls, data, and software architecture. Apple’s CarPlay developer documentation explains that platform relationship.

Apple’s Bob Borchers, vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, described the goal this way: “With CarPlay Ultra, together with automakers, we are reimagining the in-car experience, making it even more unified and consistent.” That is an Apple executive’s product description, not the result of an independent usability or safety study.

Apple’s developer documentation calls CarPlay Ultra “the ultimate iPhone experience for the car.” The phrase reflects Apple’s positioning: CarPlay Ultra is still powered partly by the iPhone, but the visible experience is designed around the complete vehicle rather than one aftermarket display.

CarPlay Ultra compared with standard CarPlay and built-in infotainment

Experience Screen coverage Controls Design Retrofit and compatibility
CarPlay Ultra Center display, instrument cluster, and other driver-facing displays where the vehicle supports them. iPhone apps plus climate, radio, audio-system, performance, and other vehicle-specific controls through touch, physical controls, or Siri. Automaker-specific themes and layouts with driver-selected colors and wallpapers. Requires iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later and deep factory vehicle integration; a generic adapter is not an Ultra upgrade.
Standard CarPlay Primarily the vehicle’s infotainment display, with selected iPhone apps projected into the car. CarPlay-supported iPhone apps and whatever vehicle controls the automaker separately exposes; standard CarPlay is not proof of Ultra support. Apple’s standard CarPlay experience within the vehicle’s supported display system. Apple says more than 800 vehicle models support standard CarPlay, and some current cars can receive standard CarPlay through aftermarket systems. That figure does not describe CarPlay Ultra compatibility. Apple’s standard CarPlay page provides the distinction.
Automaker’s built-in infotainment Factory screens and gauges controlled by the automaker’s own software. Vehicle features are controlled through the factory system, with capabilities varying by vehicle. Automaker-defined interface and branding. Does not automatically include CarPlay Ultra; the vehicle must have the automaker’s required Ultra integration.

What new features does CarPlay Ultra add?

CarPlay Ultra’s major change is that CarPlay can become part of the vehicle’s full display and control environment instead of remaining primarily an app view on the center screen. The exact appearance and available vehicle controls vary with the automaker’s implementation.

1. How does instrument-cluster integration work?

CarPlay Ultra can place maps, media information, widgets, and selected vehicle information in the instrument cluster. CarPlay Ultra can also supply dynamic speedometer and tachometer designs, fuel gauges, temperature gauges, and other cluster content. Drivers therefore can see relevant navigation or media information without treating the center display as the only CarPlay screen.

Instrument-cluster integration is one of the clearest differences between CarPlay Ultra and ordinary CarPlay. A vehicle must give CarPlay Ultra access to the relevant factory display architecture; a larger aftermarket touchscreen does not create that access. Apple describes the display and vehicle integration in its official CarPlay Ultra announcement.

2. Can CarPlay Ultra control climate and vehicle settings?

Yes. CarPlay Ultra can provide onscreen controls, physical-button access, and Siri controls for the radio and climate system, along with vehicle-specific functions such as audio-system configuration and performance settings. The exact controls depend on what the automaker integrates into the vehicle.

  • 【 Dash Cam Front and Inside Built-in G-sensor】If the dash camera detects a sudden shake/collision, it will lock the related video. So the important video will not be overwritten. Accident scene can be truly restored. This locked video will not be re-written even SD card is full.
  • 【 Loop Recording with Night Vision】 The SD Card will start to record automatically when car started on. If SD Card is recorded full, the newest video will recover the oldest video. And the night vision sensor strats to work in the night.
  • 【Suitable for Various Cars】This car das cam is suitable for kinds of cars, like vehicle, truck, bus and farm harvester.

Climate control matters because standard CarPlay generally presents iPhone apps, while CarPlay Ultra is designed to surface controls that belong to the car itself. CarPlay Ultra does not replace the vehicle’s systems that operate driving functions; the factory vehicle system remains responsible for those underlying functions. Apple’s developer material describes CarPlay’s relationship with the vehicle platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. How do automaker-specific themes change the interface?

CarPlay Ultra is not intended to look identical in every vehicle. Apple says themes are created in collaboration with each automaker, allowing the automaker’s identity to remain visible in the interface. Drivers can personalize theme colors and wallpapers, but the available designs and layouts remain tied to the vehicle maker’s implementation.

The result is a trade-off: CarPlay Ultra aims to provide a consistent Apple-connected experience while allowing an Aston Martin, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, or another participating automaker to retain a distinct visual character. A CarPlay Ultra screenshot from one brand should not be treated as a guarantee that another brand’s version will look or behave the same way.

4. What do CarPlay Ultra widgets show?

CarPlay Ultra introduces iPhone-powered widgets designed for the vehicle’s main screen or gauge cluster. Widgets are intended to make information glanceable, so drivers can see selected information without opening a full app view. The widget selection, placement, and cluster availability depend on the vehicle’s supported interface.

5. Which iOS 26 features also come to CarPlay Ultra?

Apple later announced that iOS 26 adds a compact incoming-call display, Tapbacks and pinned conversations in Messages, widgets, and Live Activities to CarPlay. Apple says those updates also come to CarPlay Ultra. These features expand communication and status information in CarPlay, but they are subsequent iOS 26 additions rather than the entire definition of CarPlay Ultra. Apple’s June 9, 2025 iOS 26 announcement lists the additions.

Feature Where it can appear What it does Important qualification
Instrument-cluster layouts Driver-facing gauge display Shows speedometer, tachometer, fuel, temperature, maps, media, widgets, and selected vehicle data. Requires compatible factory display integration.
Vehicle controls Main screen, physical controls, or Siri Manages radio, climate, audio configuration, performance settings, and other vehicle-specific functions. Available controls vary by automaker and vehicle.
Automaker themes Main display and cluster Uses brand-specific themes while allowing colors and wallpapers to be personalized. CarPlay Ultra is not visually identical across brands.
iPhone widgets Main display or gauge cluster Presents selected information at a glance without requiring a full app view. Placement and supported widgets depend on the vehicle.
iOS 26 CarPlay updates CarPlay displays Adds compact incoming calls, Tapbacks, pinned conversations, widgets, and Live Activities. Apple says the updates also come to CarPlay Ultra.

Is CarPlay Ultra just wireless CarPlay?

No. Wireless connectivity describes how the iPhone communicates with the vehicle; CarPlay Ultra describes how deeply the vehicle integrates CarPlay into its displays and controls.

CarPlay Ultra does operate wirelessly from the driver’s iPhone, but wireless operation alone does not provide instrument-cluster graphics, climate controls, performance settings, automaker-specific themes, or vehicle data. A wireless connection is therefore a technical part of CarPlay Ultra, not a substitute for the required factory integration.

A generic wireless CarPlay adapter may be useful for enabling ordinary wireless CarPlay in a vehicle that already supports compatible standard CarPlay. A generic adapter cannot reproduce CarPlay Ultra’s factory-integrated gauge cluster, vehicle-control, or automaker-designed experience. Neither an adapter nor a larger aftermarket screen should be advertised as a CarPlay Ultra retrofit. Apple’s developer documentation and Apple’s standard CarPlay page support that distinction.

What iPhone and iOS version does CarPlay Ultra require?

CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. The requirement comes from Apple’s CarPlay Ultra launch announcement. Apple’s published compatibility requirement should be checked again if Apple changes the supported versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The phone is necessary but not sufficient. An iPhone 12 or later cannot add CarPlay Ultra to a vehicle that lacks the required factory displays, controls, and automaker integration. CarPlay Ultra requires both a compatible iPhone and an eligible vehicle.

Readers with an older phone may need a iPhone 12 or later before using CarPlay Ultra, but buying a compatible iPhone alone does not upgrade an incompatible car. The linked product category is a prerequisite-product consideration, not a claim that an iPhone purchase creates Ultra compatibility.

What cars support CarPlay Ultra?

Aston Martin is the documented launch automaker for CarPlay Ultra. Apple announced on May 15, 2025 that CarPlay Ultra was available with new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the United States and Canada, and Apple said existing Aston Martin vehicles with the brand’s next-generation infotainment system would receive the experience through a software update subject to the rollout.

Aston Martin’s own material says CarPlay Ultra is available across its core range subject to vehicle model and market. That qualification is important: “Aston Martin” is not a complete answer for every model year, trim, country, or existing vehicle. Buyers should confirm eligibility for the exact vehicle before relying on the feature. Aston Martin’s CarPlay Ultra announcement provides the automaker’s availability statement.

Apple has also identified Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as newly committed brands working to bring CarPlay Ultra to drivers. A brand commitment is not evidence that every Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis vehicle currently supports CarPlay Ultra. The official materials reviewed for this article do not provide one complete, continuously updated model-by-model compatibility table for all participating brands.

At the August 14, 2026 research cutoff, the unresolved issue is the complete current model-level availability list. Apple establishes Aston Martin’s launch and names additional committed brands, but the reviewed Apple material does not establish every currently shipping model. Availability should therefore be treated as a vehicle-specific question rather than a brand-wide assumption. Apple’s launch announcement is the primary source for the announced brand commitments.

Can you get CarPlay Ultra in an existing car?

You can get CarPlay Ultra in an existing car only when the vehicle already has the required factory integration and the automaker supports the applicable software update. Apple specifically described an update path for existing Aston Martin vehicles equipped with the brand’s next-generation infotainment system, subject to rollout conditions.

Standard CarPlay support does not establish CarPlay Ultra support. Apple says more than 800 vehicle models support standard CarPlay, but that figure belongs to standard CarPlay and must not be reused as an Ultra compatibility count. Some current vehicles can receive standard CarPlay through aftermarket systems; that aftermarket availability does not prove that the vehicle can accept CarPlay Ultra.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Vehicle situation CarPlay Ultra conclusion
New vehicle explicitly listed by the automaker as CarPlay Ultra-compatible Potentially supported, provided the listing matches the model, trim, market, and required iPhone version.
Existing Aston Martin with the next-generation infotainment system An official software-update path was announced, but the owner should confirm rollout and vehicle eligibility.
Vehicle with ordinary wired or wireless CarPlay Standard CarPlay support alone does not add or establish CarPlay Ultra.
Vehicle with an aftermarket CarPlay screen The aftermarket screen may provide ordinary CarPlay where supported, but it does not reproduce CarPlay Ultra’s factory integration.
Compatible iPhone but unsupported vehicle Not enough for CarPlay Ultra; the vehicle remains the limiting requirement.

How should you check CarPlay Ultra compatibility before buying a car?

  1. Start with the exact vehicle. Record the automaker, model, model year, trim, market, and installed infotainment system. “The brand supports CarPlay Ultra” is not precise enough.
  2. Look for the exact phrase “CarPlay Ultra.” A vehicle page that mentions only Apple CarPlay or wireless CarPlay may be describing standard CarPlay.
  3. Ask whether the vehicle has factory Ultra integration. Confirm that the instrument cluster, vehicle controls, and other displays are supported, not merely the center touchscreen.
  4. Check the update path for an existing vehicle. Ask the automaker or authorized dealer whether the specific vehicle is eligible, whether the next-generation infotainment system is installed, and how the update is delivered.
  5. Confirm the phone requirement. The driver needs an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later.
  6. Do not treat an adapter as the solution. A wireless CarPlay dongle or aftermarket display may address ordinary CarPlay connectivity, but neither creates the factory integration required by CarPlay Ultra.

The expected result of a proper compatibility check is a model- and vehicle-specific confirmation, not simply a statement that the automaker supports Apple CarPlay. If a dealer cannot distinguish standard CarPlay from CarPlay Ultra, ask for confirmation of instrument-cluster support and the vehicle’s integrated climate and other control functions.

How widespread is CarPlay, and what does that say about CarPlay Ultra?

According to Apple in its June 9, 2025 iOS 26 announcement, CarPlay was used more than 600 million times per day. The figure is an Apple-reported usage claim, not an independent measurement, and it describes CarPlay broadly rather than CarPlay Ultra specifically. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement is the source for the figure.

Apple’s current CarPlay product page says more than 800 vehicle models support standard CarPlay. The more than 800 figure refers to standard CarPlay and should not be presented as the number of CarPlay Ultra-compatible vehicles. CarPlay Ultra requires substantially deeper automaker integration, and the official sources reviewed here do not provide an equivalent complete Ultra model count. Apple’s CarPlay product page makes the standard-CarPlay scope clear.

The adoption figures show why CarPlay Ultra is significant as a product direction, but they do not answer whether a particular vehicle supports Ultra. The practical buying question remains the same: does the exact vehicle have the required factory integration in the relevant market?

What has not been independently established?

No independent comparative safety, usability, latency, or reliability study was identified in the primary sources reviewed for this article. Apple and Aston Martin describe the product’s capabilities and rollout, but those vendor statements should not be treated as independent performance validation.

CarPlay Ultra may reduce the need to move between separate phone, infotainment, and gauge-display interfaces, but this article does not claim that CarPlay Ultra is safer, faster, or more reliable than every competing system. Actual behavior can vary by vehicle implementation, software version, iPhone, market, and automaker update.

What did Apple and Aston Martin say about the launch?

Apple’s product announcement presents CarPlay Ultra as a collaboration with automakers, while Aston Martin identifies itself as the first launch partner. Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark said: “Aston Martin is delighted to have collaborated with Apple and to be first to launch CarPlay Ultra.” That statement is an automaker executive’s description of the launch, not an independent test result. Apple’s announcement contains the quoted launch statements and initial availability details.

The wording “just announced” is now stale for publication. Apple announced CarPlay Ultra on May 15, 2025; the product subsequently launched commercially with Aston Martin. The remaining uncertainty is not whether Apple announced Ultra, but which exact vehicles and markets support it at the time a reader is shopping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an iPhone 12 alone add CarPlay Ultra?

No. An iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later is required, but the vehicle must also have the factory integration needed for CarPlay Ultra. An iPhone alone cannot add Ultra to an incompatible car.

Is there a CarPlay Ultra adapter or retrofit?

No. A generic wireless CarPlay adapter can support ordinary CarPlay in some compatible vehicles, but an adapter cannot add CarPlay Ultra’s instrument-cluster displays, vehicle controls, or automaker-integrated themes.

Which Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models support CarPlay Ultra?

Apple has named Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as committed brands, but the official sources reviewed do not provide a complete current model-, trim-, and market-level list. Check the automaker’s information for the exact vehicle before buying.

Does Apple’s claim of more than 800 CarPlay vehicle models include CarPlay Ultra?

No. Apple’s more-than-800-vehicle figure refers to standard CarPlay, not CarPlay Ultra. Ultra requires deeper factory integration and does not have an equivalent complete compatibility count in the reviewed official sources.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Apple CarPlay Ultra is a factory-integrated expansion of CarPlay that reaches the instrument cluster and vehicle controls. It requires an iPhone 12 or later with iOS 18.5 or later and a specifically supported vehicle. Aston Martin is the documented launch partner; Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have been named as committed brands, but buyers must verify exact model and market compatibility. A generic wireless CarPlay adapter cannot add Ultra.
