BMW really did build the M3 Touring race car it first showed as an April Fools’ joke. The competition-ready one-off uses the BMW M4 GT3 EVO’s technical base, makes up to 590 hp by BMW’s figures, and won its SPX class at the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours. BMW initially reported fifth overall; its later retrospective says a post-race disqualification lifted the car to fourth.
How BMW’s April Fools’ car became real
On 1 April 2025, BMW M Motorsport posted images of a supposed M3 Touring GT race car as an April Fools’ joke. The response was strong enough to turn an existing engineering idea into a real project. BMW says the post reached more than one million users and received over 1.6 million views; those figures come from BMW’s own social-media reporting.
BMW says development took eight months. The result is a single competition car, not a production M3 Touring trim or a road-car package. BMW M Motorsport described the project as a way to act on the enthusiasm of its fans. Jens Klingmann, a BMW M works driver, said the decision to build it reflected the company’s connection with its community. BMW’s announcement gives the project background and its original driver line-up.
What the M3 Touring 24H is—and how it differs from a road car
The car takes the basic body form of the BMW M3 Touring but shares its technical data with the M4 GT3 EVO, according to BMW. The wagon shape required changes to aerodynamics and packaging. It competed in the SPX class, a category distinct from the production M3 Touring; BMW’s description does not make it a road-going version of that car.

BMW lists these details on its M3 Touring 24H technical page. The car was also designed to work as a race taxi, with an optional co-driver’s seat.

How it performed at the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours
Schubert Motorsport entered the M3 Touring 24H in SPX. The announced driver line-up was Jens Klingmann, Ugo de Wilde, Connor De Phillippi and Neil Verhagen. BMW’s event report also noted that 352,000 spectators attended the 2026 race.
BMW’s report on 18 May initially placed the car fifth overall and first in SPX. Its 10 July retrospective gives the final overall result as fourth: the car that had finished second was disqualified, promoting the Touring. The accurate result is therefore an SPX class win and fourth overall in BMW’s later account—not fifth as the final classification. BMW’s first post-race report records the initial result, while BMW’s July retrospective explains the revised placing.

Before the 24-hour race, the event organizer reported that the car had dominated SPX at the April qualifiers. Its qualifying livery incorporated real fan comments beneath BMW’s original April Fools’ post; that detail relates to the qualifying campaign, not the final 24-hour result. BMW’s July retrospective says the unique car is set to join collector Rainer Bonnetsmüller’s collection. That makes the project a rare case of a social-media joke becoming a fully developed endurance racer, rather than the announcement of a new customer model.
