BMW Panoramic iDrive is not one oversized dashboard screen. It is a coordinated in-car interface that combines a panoramic windscreen projection, an optional 3D head-up display, a central touchscreen and controls on the multifunction steering wheel. BMW introduced it for its Neue Klasse vehicles, with the iX3 the first series-production model identified for the system.
What BMW Panoramic iDrive includes
BMW uses BMW iDrive for the complete display and operating experience. The Neue Klasse version, BMW Panoramic iDrive, runs on BMW Operating System X and brings four elements together. The panoramic display is the visual centerpiece, but it is only one part of the interface.
BMW Panoramic Vision
BMW describes Panoramic Vision as a projection across a black printed surface in the lower part of the windscreen, extending from A-pillar to A-pillar. It is not a conventional screen mounted on the dashboard. BMW says the projection is visible to all occupants and creates a 3D effect for both driver and passengers.
In left-hand-drive cars, BMW places the most important driving information in the driver’s line of sight on the left. Content in the central and right portions can be personalized through the central display. BMW says drivers can swipe selected widgets from that display to Panoramic Vision, arranging up to six widgets there.

Optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display
The optional 3D Head-Up Display is separate from Panoramic Vision. BMW says it presents navigation and automated-driving information in the driver’s field of vision, coordinated with the panoramic projection. The company has not established in the cited material whether the option is standard or available on every model or in every market.
Central Display
A free-cut-design central display sits near the steering wheel. BMW says matrix backlighting provides its color and luminosity. Beyond serving as a touchscreen, it is the control point for choosing which widgets appear in Panoramic Vision.

- Feature:The dashboard mat can effectively prevent scratches on the surface of the dashboard caused by friction and impacts that may occur during daily driving, maintaining the cleanliness and aesthetics of the dashboard. Additionally, it can effectively block sunshine rays, delaying the aging process of the dashboard.
- The dashboard mat is made of flannel material, which is softer and comfortable to touch. It fits well with the dashboard, has good sun protection and heat insulation effect, and has anti-slip silicone particles on the back, making it not easy to slip off. It can be washed with warm or cold water and dried in a ventilated place.
- Installation:No adhesive is needed. Clean the dashboard first, then place the mat on the top of the dashboard, flatten it, and align it with the reserved openings for air conditioning outlets, speakers, etc.
- Package:1 Pc x Dashboard Cover. There are reserved openings for air-conditioning outlets, speakers, etc., which fit the dashboard very well and can enhance the appearance of the car interior.
Multifunction steering wheel
The steering wheel has illuminated controls with haptic feedback. BMW’s described layout puts driver-assistance functions on the left and content controls on the right. Physical switches remain for selected functions, including wipers, turn signals, mirrors, volume, gear selection and window de-icers.
How the displays and controls work together
The design distributes information across different surfaces rather than relying on the central display alone. BMW assigns the driver’s key driving information to the left side of the windscreen projection, while other areas can show personalized content. The optional HUD adds a separate layer for navigation and automated-driving information in the driver’s field of vision. Touch, voice and steering-wheel controls provide different ways to interact.

BMW Operating System X and the Neue Klasse rollout
BMW announced Panoramic iDrive at CES in January 2025 for the Neue Klasse. The system’s software foundation is BMW Operating System X, which BMW says is based on an Android Open Source Project stack and developed in-house. BMW also says the platform can integrate third-party content and anticipates streaming, gaming and infotainment offerings.

BMW’s corporate overview identifies the iX3, unveiled in September 2025, as the first series-production Neue Klasse model. The BMW i3 is announced to follow in 2026. These statements do not establish a complete model rollout, trim packaging, delivery schedule or availability by country.

BMW says the development phase included usability-lab studies involving around 3,000 customers. Its January 2025 announcement also cites learning from a global fleet of more than 22 million connected BMW vehicles. Those figures describe BMW’s development work and its own fleet statement, not independently reported findings that the interface reduces distraction or improves safety.

BMW presents the driver-focused placement of information as an intention of the design. The cited company announcement and independent Associated Press coverage of the CES presentation do not establish a safety trial, long-term user study, or evidence that Panoramic iDrive outperforms another vehicle interface. A projection that is designed to keep information in view should not, by itself, be treated as proof of a safety benefit.
What to know before comparing it with another car
Panoramic iDrive is a factory-integrated vehicle system, not a dashboard accessory or a substantiated retrofit. To compare it fairly with another interface, look at where projected information appears, what is placed in the driver’s direct line of sight, whether a HUD is optional, how much content can be customized, which physical controls remain and whether independent usability or distraction evidence exists. The available sources do not provide competitor specifications or comparative test results, so they do not support ranking systems against one another.
