Which BMW M3 generation is the best? On a balance of historical importance, driving character, performance for its era, everyday usability and distinctiveness, my ranking is: 1) E46, 2) E30, 3) E9x, 4) G8x, 5) E36, 6) F8x. “Worst” here means least compelling in this particular comparison, not a bad car. BMW’s own histories establish the chronology and specifications; the order is editorial judgment.
The name also changed within the modern lineup. The M3 remained the sedan in the F8x and G8x eras, while the related coupe and convertible became the M4.
How the ranking works
Each generation is judged against the others using five consistent questions:
- Historical and motorsport significance: how much the car shaped the M3 story.
- Engine character and power delivery: response, sound, rev range and personality, not just horsepower.
- Performance for its time: acceleration and capability relative to contemporary rivals and technology.
- Body-style and transmission choice: the breadth and character of the lineup.
- Everyday usability: practicality, refinement and how easy the car is to live with.
BMW’s quoted outputs vary by market, model year and rating standard, so figures below are identified rather than blended into one supposedly universal specification.

6. F8x (2014–2020): brilliant pace, less mechanical romance
The F8x generation is last only because the other five make a stronger emotional or historical case. It is not slow or incompetent. BMW introduced the M3 in spring 2014 with a turbocharged straight-six rated at 431 hp in its global retrospective. BMW’s U.S. history describes a 425-hp S55 and an optional M-DCT car capable of 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds.
Why it ranks sixth
- Turbocharging delivered enormous mid-range thrust but softened the naturally aspirated, high-revving identity that defined earlier M3s.
- The sedan-only M3/M4 split made the naming clearer, but it also separated the badge from the coupe body many enthusiasts instinctively associate with it.
- It is highly usable and exceptionally quick, yet its performance can feel easier to access than its predecessors’ rewards.
The F8x is the rational choice for a fast daily driver with modern technology and four doors. It ranks below the others because its character is less distinctive than the engines before and after it.
5. G8x (2021–present): the most capable, not the most delicate
The sixth generation broadens the formula considerably. BMW offers rear-wheel drive or xDrive, a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic, and keeps the M3 as the sedan while the coupe carries the M4 badge.

What the numbers actually describe
For the U.S. 2025 model year, BMW lists 473 hp for a manual M3, 503 hp for rear-drive Competition, and 523 hp for Competition with M xDrive. BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds for the xDrive car. Those are U.S. 2025 figures, not timeless worldwide specifications.
Why it stops at fourth
- It has the widest capability envelope here: usable rear-drive variants, all-weather traction, a manual option and serious track pace.
- The large body, complex electronics and controversial styling make it feel less intimate than an older M3.
- Its acceleration is spectacular, but newer speed alone cannot make it historically more important than the cars that established the formula.
The G8x is the best all-rounder and the strongest choice for buyers who need one car for commuting, weather and occasional track work. It ranks fourth because capability is only one part of an M3’s appeal.
4. E36 (1992–1999): the six-cylinder formula becomes usable
The E36 replaced the E30’s four-cylinder with an inline-six and made the M3 a broader, more mature performance car. BMW’s global history describes a European 3.0-liter version with 286 hp, followed by a 3,201 cc update producing 321 hp with Double-VANOS. BMW’s U.S. historical material instead describes a 3.0-liter, 240-hp car and notes the engine grew to 3.2 liters in 1996. These regional figures should not be combined.

Strengths
- The straight-six is smoother and more flexible than the E30 engine while retaining a distinctly mechanical response.
- Coupe, sedan and convertible configurations made it easier to use as a real-world car.
- It brought M3 performance to a wider audience without abandoning rear-wheel-drive balance.
Why it is not higher
The E36 is less singular than the E30 and less sonically dramatic than the E46. Its greater refinement is an advantage for commuting but slightly reduces the sense of occasion that defines the top-ranked cars.
3. E9x (2007–2013): the unforgettable V8 detour
The fourth-generation M3 is the only road-going M3 generation with a V8. BMW’s global retrospective gives its naturally aspirated engine 420 hp and highlights a standard carbon-fiber roof and largely aluminum front axle. BMW’s 2026 U.S. history describes a 4.0-liter, 414-hp version with an 8,300-rpm redline, showing why market and rating context matters.
Why the V8 matters
High revs, immediate throttle response and a motorsport-flavored soundtrack give the E9x a character no turbocharged M3 duplicates. The chassis also combines serious capability with a conventional sedan, coupe or convertible body choice.

The compromise
It is heavier and more complex than the cars that came before it, and its low-rev torque is less effortless than the turbocharged generations. Still, its unique engine makes it the most distinctive post-E46 M3 and earns third place.

The first M3 established the template through competition rather than marketing. BMW says production began in 1986 and that 5,000 street cars were initially required for Group A homologation. Its retrospective describes a 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 200 hp, 0–100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a 235 km/h top speed. These are BMW-published figures, not independent test results.
Special-edition significance
The Sport Evolution used a 2.5-liter engine rated at 238 hp and was limited to 600 examples. That combination of homologation purpose, compact dimensions and high-revving four-cylinder character gives the E30 unmatched historical weight.

Why it narrowly misses first
Its rear seats, cabin refinement and straight-line pace are modest by later M3 standards. The E30 wins the history contest, but the E46 delivers a more complete balance of speed, usability and emotional connection.
1. E46 (1999–2006): the best overall M3
The E46 is the strongest all-round expression of the original idea: compact, naturally aspirated, rear-wheel drive and genuinely usable. BMW’s global account gives the European 3,246 cc inline-six 343 hp and 365 Nm. BMW’s later U.S. retrospective describes a 333-hp 3.2-liter and a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed SMG-II. The market and transmission context matters when comparing examples.
Why it takes the top spot
- The straight-six combines a tractable lower range with an urgent, rewarding upper rev band.
- Its dimensions and steering feel remain approachable without making it impractical.
- It offers the strongest compromise between classic involvement and modern usability.
- It is distinctive without relying on a one-off engine layout or homologation rarity.
The E46 does not have the E30’s foundational importance or the E9x’s V8 drama. It wins because it combines the most of what enthusiasts want in one generation.

How to choose a generation instead of following the ranking
- Choose E30 for provenance, compact dimensions and motorsport history.
- Choose E36 for a more affordable-feeling classic six-cylinder experience and broader body-style choice.
- Choose E46 for the best overall blend of analog feel and daily usability.
- Choose E9x if engine character and the naturally aspirated V8 matter most.
- Choose F8x for discreet four-door speed, turbo torque and modern performance.
- Choose G8x if you need the greatest traction, acceleration, technology and configuration flexibility.
BMW itself called the M3 “a sporting icon and dynamic benchmark for five generations” in its 2016 retrospective. That is BMW’s characterization, not a neutral consensus, but the six-generation history explains why no single metric—horsepower, launch time or rarity—can settle the ranking on its own.
