The BMW M2 has two generations: the F87, introduced for model year 2016, and the G87, announced in 2022 and launched from 2023. The most significant milestones are the F87 M2 Competition for 2019, the track-focused 2020 M2 CS, the G87’s 2025 update, and BMW’s announced 2027 M2 M xDrive—the first all-wheel-drive M2.

BMW M2 generation and model-year timeline

Model year or milestone Generation and variant What changed
2016 F87 M2 Original M2: rear-wheel drive, 3.0-liter inline-six, manual or optional seven-speed M DCT.
2019 F87 M2 Competition Replaced the standard M2 Coupe in the U.S.; adopted an engine based on the M3/M4 power unit and received mechanical revisions.
2020 F87 M2 CS More track-focused special variant with increased output and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components.
2023 launch G87 M2 Second generation, with technology adapted from the M3/M4, rear-wheel drive and an optional six-speed manual.
2025 G87 M2 update More power, styling and interior changes, additional exterior colors, and BMW Operating System 8.5.
2027 announced G87 M2 M xDrive BMW’s first all-wheel-drive M2; BMW announced a late-summer 2026 market launch plan.

The table covers major announced milestones, not a complete equipment history for every market and model year. BMW’s published output figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

F87: the original M2 (2016)

BMW announced the first M2 on October 13, 2015, for the 2016 model year. Its U.S. announcement specified a 3.0-liter inline-six producing 365 hp and rear-wheel drive. Buyers could choose a six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed M DCT. BMW estimated 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds for the manual and 4.2 seconds for the DCT; those are BMW claims, not independently measured results. BMW’s 2016 M2 announcement.

F87 M2 Competition (2019)

For 2019, the M2 Competition replaced the standard M2 Coupe in the U.S. BMW based its engine on the M3/M4 power unit and described revised cooling, a dual exhaust system and other mechanical changes. BMW’s U.S. announcement listed 405 hp and 406 lb-ft; its global announcement listed 410 hp and 550 Nm. These are figures from different BMW market materials and should be kept with their respective units and source context, rather than treated as a single universal rating. BMW’s U.S. 2019 M2 Competition announcement; BMW’s global M2 Competition announcement.

The announcement gave preliminary output of 444 hp and 406 lb-ft—39 hp more than the M2 Competition—and highlighted a CFRP roof, hood and aerodynamic components. G87 update for 2025

BMW announced the 2025 M2 update in June 2024. The U.S. release said output increased by 20 hp to 473 hp; the global release gave 353 kW/480 hp. Keep the market and source attached to those figures. BMW also announced exterior and interior detail changes, a broader choice of exterior colors and BMW Operating System 8.5. The U.S. announcement said worldwide production phase-in would begin in August 2024. BMW’s U.S. 2025 M2 announcement; BMW’s global 2025 M2 announcement.

2027 M2 M xDrive: BMW’s first all-wheel-drive M2

In June 2026, BMW announced the 2027 M2 M xDrive, the first M2 with all-wheel drive. BMW’s U.S. announcement retained a 473 hp inline-six and said market launch would begin in late summer 2026. That is BMW’s announced timing, not confirmation of availability at every local dealer. BMW listed a U.S. base MSRP of $73,600 plus $1,350 destination and handling at announcement; that market-specific announcement price is not a current quote. BMW’s 2027 M2 M xDrive announcement.

How the generations and variants differ

Engine and output

The original F87 started at 365 hp in BMW’s U.S. 2016 announcement. The 2019 Competition brought an M3/M4-derived engine, while the 2020 CS added output and CFRP hardware. The G87 arrived with 338 kW/460 hp in BMW’s global announcement; its 2025 update was listed at 473 hp in the U.S. and 353 kW/480 hp globally. Output alone does not make one generation objectively better, and figures from different markets and announcement contexts are not a like-for-like independent comparison.

Transmission and drivetrain

The F87’s original U.S. lineup paired a six-speed manual with an optional seven-speed M DCT; the Competition and CS announcements also identify DCT availability. The G87 launch announcement specified an optional six-speed manual. BMW’s 2027 M xDrive announcement adds all-wheel drive for the first time in the M2 line; earlier generations and the previously announced G87 configurations were rear-wheel drive.

Focus and equipment

The standard F87 established the compact rear-drive M2 formula. The Competition emphasized mechanical revisions, while the CS added track-oriented positioning and CFRP parts. The G87 brought M3/M4-derived technology into a new generation, and the 2025 update added digital and cabin changes alongside exterior revisions. M xDrive adds a drivetrain choice rather than replacing the rear-wheel-drive history of the line.

Which BMW M2 generation or variant fits your priorities?

  • For the original-generation experience: Look at the F87, introduced for 2016. Its documented U.S. launch configuration included a manual and optional DCT.
  • For the F87’s mechanical step-up: The 2019 Competition is the variant that replaced the standard M2 Coupe in the U.S. and adopted an M3/M4-based engine.
  • For a more track-focused F87 special edition: The 2020 CS is distinguished by its preliminary higher output and CFRP components.
  • For the newer generation and its updated digital features: Consider the G87, launched from 2023, including the 2025 update with Operating System 8.5.
  • For all-wheel-drive traction: BMW announced the 2027 M2 M xDrive as the first AWD M2, with launch timing and U.S. pricing as announced by BMW in June 2026.

These milestones do not establish a complete year-by-year equipment matrix, reliability rankings, ownership costs, used-market values or current dealer inventory. Those questions require market- and vehicle-specific information beyond BMW’s launch announcements.
