Compare the exact model year and listings before deciding. In broad terms, choose the 3 Series if the specific car better suits your passenger, luggage and longer-trip needs; choose the 1 Series if its hatchback size, equipment, condition and price fit you better.
Why the year and body style matter
This is best treated as a used-car comparison unless you have a particular market and model year in mind. BMW’s UK 2015 1 Series announcement described a 118d with 150 hp and 330 Nm, while BMW’s current UK 1 Series line-up lists the 120 Sport, 120 M Sport and M135 xDrive—not a 118d. The current model range therefore should not be confused with historical 118d listings. BMW’s 2015 1 Series announcement and BMW’s current 1 Series page show the difference.
The same caution applies to the 318d. BMW’s 2019 3 Series technical attachment includes 318d variants, whereas its 2022 UK range announcement names diesel choices including the 320d, 320d xDrive and M340d xDrive. That range snapshot does not mean a 318d was never sold in other years or markets. BMW’s 2019 3 Series technical specifications and BMW’s 2022 UK range announcement are specific to their respective periods.
Also establish whether the 3 Series is a saloon or Touring and whether the 1 Series is the hatchback generation in the listing. BMW’s comparison tool organizes selections by series, body type, engine and transmission; those are useful starting points for an apples-to-apples check. BMW’s model comparison tool can help identify the variant, but it does not judge the condition or value of a particular used car.

What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
BMW’s 2015 UK announcement gives its then-current 118d 150 hp and 330 Nm. It also quotes fuel consumption of up to 74.3 mpg for the published configuration. Treat that as a manufacturer figure for that configuration, not a real-world guarantee or a specification that applies to every 118d. BMW’s period announcement does not establish which car will use less fuel in your driving.
BMW’s 2019 3 Series technical attachment lists four-cylinder, 1,995 cc 318d variants and a 480-litre boot for the specified generation and configuration. Do not transfer that capacity to every 318d body style or generation. The current UK 1 Series page gives 380 litres, rising to 1,200 litres with the rear seats folded, but those are current-model figures—not measurements for an older 118d. The 2019 3 Series attachment and the current 1 Series page describe different vehicles.

The 2022 UK announcement’s 320d figures—190 hp and 400 Nm—are useful only as context for that year’s range. They are not 318d figures and should not be used to infer how a specific 318d compares with an 118d. BMW’s 2022 announcement identifies the 320d, 320d xDrive and M340d xDrive among that period’s diesel choices.
How to choose between the two listings
- Identify each car precisely. Record model year, generation, market, body style, engine variant, transmission and drivetrain. Check registration and emissions details for the market where the car is being bought.
- Match the equipment, not just the badge. Confirm which M Sport items and options are actually fitted to the 118d, and compare wheels, tyres and other equipment on both cars. A trim name alone does not establish the individual car’s specification.
- Check the cabin and cargo fit for your use. Try the rear seats and luggage space with the passengers and bags you normally carry. Use figures for the exact generation and body style, and consider a Touring separately from a saloon.
- Compare the cars’ condition and records. Review service documentation, mileage, inspection findings, ownership and repair history. A well-kept example can be a better choice than a more suitable-on-paper variant with unresolved concerns.
- Judge the price against the actual car. Compare asking prices for similar year, body style, mileage, equipment and condition in the same market. The badge does not establish which listing is better value.
- Think about your journeys. Consider how much of your driving is urban, commuting or longer-distance, and whether passenger comfort or a smaller hatchback matters more. Neither model name proves a real-world fuel-economy or running-cost advantage.
Which one is the better buy?
Choose the 3 Series if the particular 318d offers the space and comfort you need for passengers, luggage or longer trips, and its service history, condition and price check out. Choose the 118d M Sport if the smaller hatchback format and equipment suit your needs better and that individual car is the stronger example. These are decision criteria, not a comparative road-test verdict: without the model years or listings, there is no supported basis to declare either one faster, cheaper to run, more reliable or better value.

For a live search, BMW’s UK locator offers new and Approved Used vehicle searches, but it does not establish that either named diesel is currently in stock or set a price for one. BMW UK’s vehicle locator is a place to check availability, not evidence of a particular car’s condition or suitability.
