The BMW iX4 is not yet a same-time alternative to the Tesla Model Y: BMW says the iX4 will launch in March 2027, while Tesla currently lists Model Y configurations in the U.S. BMW’s preliminary U.S. range estimate is higher on paper, but it is not final EPA certification; BMW also has not published a numeric U.S. cargo-volume figure in the materials available. For now, buyers can compare official specifications, but not independent test results or a completed purchase decision.
Is the BMW iX4 available yet?
No. BMW announced the iX4 as a March 2027 launch. The Tesla Model Y is listed in current U.S. configurations. That makes this a provisional buyer’s comparison rather than a choice between two vehicles available at the same time. BMW’s final certification, local availability and pricing may change before deliveries begin. BMW’s October 2026 global announcement and Tesla’s current Model Y page describe different points in each vehicle’s sales timeline.

BMW iX4 vs. Tesla Model Y range
For U.S. buyers, BMW currently estimates 384–428 miles for the iX4 50 xDrive using preliminary tests conducted under EPA procedures. BMW says actual range depends on configuration, driving, temperature and charging habits. This is not a final EPA-certified rating, and it should not be treated as a promise of everyday or highway range. BMW USA’s iX4 specifications give the estimate and its qualification.

| U.S. configuration | Listed EPA-estimated range |

| Standard RWD | 321 miles |
| Standard AWD | 294 miles |
| Premium RWD | 357 miles |
| Premium AWD | 327 miles |
| Performance | 306 miles |
These are Tesla’s current U.S. page figures; check the exact trim and wheel configuration when shopping, since configuration affects specifications. Tesla’s Model Y page is the source for the listed configurations and estimates.
BMW’s preliminary U.S. estimate is higher on paper than the Model Y figures Tesla currently lists, but the iX4 result is not final EPA certification and the vehicles have not been compared in the same independent test. Do not compare BMW’s European WLTP numbers with Tesla’s U.S. EPA figures: they come from different test procedures and market configurations.
For context only, BMW’s global announcement gives provisional WLTP ranges of up to 638 km for the iX4 40 xDrive, 828 km for the 50 xDrive and 777 km for the M60 xDrive. BMW says actual range varies with driving style, weather, battery temperature and charging power. Those European-cycle numbers are not U.S. EPA ratings and should not be converted into a direct ranking against the Tesla figures. BMW’s global announcement identifies the figures as provisional.
For a buyer, the practical question is not simply which headline number is largest. Think about the routes you drive, the weather and speeds you encounter, and how often you can charge at home or at work. The published range figures are useful for narrowing a shortlist, but they are not a substitute for a same-route comparison under similar conditions. No independent back-to-back range test is available for the not-yet-launched iX4, so claims about which one will travel farther in everyday use would go beyond the evidence.
How fast does the BMW iX4 charge?
BMW specifies up to 400 kW DC charging for the U.S. iX4 50 xDrive and says it can add up to 184 miles in 10 minutes under its stated conditions. BMW also gives a 10–80% charge time of 21 minutes at a suitable high-power station and AC charging up to 15.4 kW. The U.S. iX4 page identifies a NACS charge port. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent charging test. BMW USA’s iX4 page provides the U.S. figures.
Tesla lists maximum Supercharging power of up to 225 kW for Standard RWD and AWD configurations and up to 250 kW for Premium and Performance variants. Its displayed miles-added figures vary by trim and are illustrative; Tesla says its 15-minute figure uses constant-speed data. Tesla also describes route planning that inserts Supercharger stops and home charging as an ownership option. Tesla’s Model Y page lists these specifications and explains its route-planning feature.
Peak charging power alone does not establish which vehicle will complete a road trip sooner. Maximum rates, added-mile claims and charge-time claims use different reference conditions and time windows. Actual stops depend on the charging curve, battery temperature, state of charge, charger availability and route. BMW’s global release gives up to 387 km added in 10 minutes for the 50 xDrive, 360 km for the M60 and 301 km for the 40 xDrive, based on WLTP-cycle range and assuming maximum DC power is available. These European figures are not directly comparable with the U.S. claims. BMW’s global announcement sets out that qualification.

BMW’s 400-kW figure is a peak maximum, not a rate the vehicle is guaranteed to sustain throughout a charging stop. Likewise, Tesla’s maximum Supercharging rate does not tell you how quickly a particular battery will charge over an entire stop. The available sources do not provide comparable charging curves for the two vehicles. When the iX4 is closer to delivery, look for final specifications and independent charging tests that report a complete stop or a defined state-of-charge window, rather than comparing peak numbers alone.
What to check for your routes
- Map charging options on your regular trips and the long-distance routes you actually expect to drive.
- Check connector compatibility and local station access for the exact vehicle and market.
- Compare expected route stops and charge times for the trim you would buy, rather than using maximum kW as a proxy for total trip time.
- For home charging, confirm the vehicle connector, electrical capacity, installation requirements and compatibility of the equipment you plan to use.
A NACS Level 2 home charger is one possible search term for U.S. shoppers assessing home charging, but the connector label alone does not settle whether a particular unit is right for a home or compatible with a specific vehicle setup. Verify the connector, amperage, home electrical capacity, installation needs and exact vehicle compatibility before choosing equipment. The available information does not establish a preferred charger, installer, price or merchant program.
Which has more cargo space?
The available official figures do not support a numeric cargo-volume winner. Tesla lists 74 cubic feet for Model Y Standard RWD, 74.8 cubic feet for Standard AWD, and 76 cubic feet for Premium and Performance. BMW describes the iX4 as having a large trunk and front storage space but does not give a numeric cargo-volume figure in the reviewed U.S. material. Without a corresponding BMW number using the same measurement convention, the figures cannot settle which vehicle carries more. Tesla’s Model Y page lists capacities; BMW USA’s iX4 page describes storage without a volume figure.
For one more detailed Tesla example, the Model Y owner’s manual lists the Premium five-seat and Performance configurations at 29.0 cubic feet behind the second row, 71.4 cubic feet behind the first row with the second row folded, and 75.5 cubic feet maximum total cargo volume with a driver and front passenger. These are distinct measurement positions, not interchangeable descriptions of trunk capacity. Compare like with like: space behind the second row should not be ranked against a maximum volume measured with seats folded. Configuration also matters. Tesla’s Model Y owner’s manual provides the configuration-specific breakdown.

Those are qualitative descriptions, not measured comparisons with the Model Y. The global launch material also describes passenger and luggage space without establishing a directly comparable cargo figure. BMW’s announcement provides the qualitative description.
Consequently, the defensible answer to “Which has more cargo space?” is that the published information is incomplete for a direct comparison. Tesla has trim-specific volumes; BMW’s reviewed U.S. information does not give a matching number. Even once BMW publishes one, shoppers should check whether the figure describes the luggage area behind the rear seats, a folded-seat maximum, front storage, or a combined total. A volume total can also miss practical differences in the load opening, floor height and shape.
How to compare cargo and passenger fit in person
- Load the same everyday items into each vehicle and check the opening, floor shape and lift-over height.
- Compare cargo volume behind the second row, with the rear seats folded and in any front storage area separately.
- Sit in both rows, especially beneath the iX4’s sloping roof, and assess visibility and headroom for the passengers who will use those seats.
- Bring the child seats, strollers, luggage or other bulky items that need to fit; exterior dimensions do not establish fit or ease of access.
Do not assume a coupe-style roofline automatically makes the iX4 unsuitable for rear passengers, or that a generous published cargo total guarantees the Model Y will suit every load. BMW describes rear headroom as comfortable, but this is the company’s description and has not been independently assessed. A hands-on visit can answer questions the current specification sheets cannot: whether adults have enough room, whether a child seat is easy to install, and whether a bulky item fits through the opening without awkward maneuvering.

How similar are their exterior dimensions?
The vehicles have broadly similar exterior envelopes, but close outside measurements do not prove that their cabins or cargo areas are equally useful.
| Measurement | BMW iX4 | Tesla Model Y |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 188.3 inches | 188.6–188.8 inches, depending on trim |
| Width | 74.6 inches | Not stated in the cited current page material |
| Height | 63.3 inches | Approximately 63.4–63.9 inches, depending on trim |
BMW’s measurements come from its U.S. iX4 specifications; Tesla’s length and height vary by configuration in its current U.S. materials. BMW USA; Tesla. These exterior figures do not establish rear headroom, child-seat fit, cargo-floor shape, visibility or seat comfort.
That limitation matters if you are shopping around a garage, narrow parking space or particular passenger needs. The similar published lengths and heights are a useful first filter, not a conclusion about maneuverability or room inside. The sources reviewed here do not provide a complete like-for-like set of cabin dimensions, turning measurements or visibility assessments. Check the exact vehicle configuration and inspect it in person when the iX4 is available.
What should buyers know about towing and everyday use?
BMW says the iX4 can tow up to 4,400 pounds when equipped with the optional trailer hitch. That maximum is conditional on the equipment; confirm the rating for the final trim and market, along with hitch availability, payload and the effect of towing on range. BMW also says bidirectional charging is supported with available adapters. Verify the specific equipment and market before treating that as a ready-to-use home-backup feature. BMW USA’s iX4 specifications describe these capabilities.
Do not infer a Tesla towing comparison from the figures above. Confirm the current tow rating and equipment for the exact Model Y configuration under consideration. Tesla’s U.S. page offers a seven-seat Premium AWD configuration; seating availability therefore also varies by trim. Tesla’s current Model Y page lists its U.S. configurations.
Charging convenience is also local rather than universal. Tesla highlights route planning with Supercharger stops; BMW identifies NACS for the U.S. iX4. A connector designation alone does not tell a buyer which stations are available on a particular route or under what access conditions. Map local and frequent routes, and confirm compatibility for the vehicle and charging sites you plan to use.
For household use, a route planner and an overnight home-charging option can be as consequential as peak charging power. Tesla promotes both route planning with Supercharger stops and home charging. BMW lists NACS on the U.S. iX4 page, but connector compatibility is only one part of access; local station availability and any applicable access conditions still need checking. Neither a brand’s network messaging nor a charge-port type establishes that charging will be equally convenient for every driver or region.

BMW’s bidirectional-charging statement is also conditional: adapters are described as available, and the exact equipment and market matter. It should not be presented as a guaranteed backup-power system ready to use with every iX4. Buyers interested in that use should verify which adapters and supporting equipment are offered for their location, and what the final vehicle configuration supports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to make a fair comparison before buying
- Match market and trim. Compare U.S. vehicles with U.S. specifications. BMW’s iX4 range remains a preliminary estimate; Tesla’s figures are the EPA estimates currently listed for its specific U.S. configurations.
- Evaluate road-trip range and charging together. Consider route coverage, expected stops, charging-curve behavior and the conditions behind each manufacturer’s claim. Do not treat miles added in 10 minutes and miles added in 15 minutes as equivalent tests.
- Test passenger and cargo fit. Sit in both rows and try the seats and child seats that matter. Compare cargo in the same seat position and with the same load; a folded-seat maximum is not a behind-the-second-row figure.
- Check home-charging feasibility. Verify connector compatibility, electrical capacity and installation needs for your home, rather than assuming a vehicle’s maximum AC rate describes your household setup.
- Confirm towing details. BMW’s published maximum depends on an optional hitch. Verify the final vehicle’s equipment, payload and applicable rating, and look up a current Tesla rating rather than assuming equivalence.
- Recheck availability and pricing when ordering. BMW’s stated launch is March 2027, and final local pricing and delivery timing may change. Tesla prices and offers are volatile; consult the current listing for the configuration and market you are considering.
Cost is one area where this comparison cannot yet offer a reliable answer. Final iX4 pricing has not been established, and Tesla’s prices and offers can change. Check current local listings for the exact trim, rather than treating an old starting price or a different market’s price as definitive. For the same reason, there is no substantiated total-cost-of-ownership comparison here: purchase price, incentives, financing, insurance, electricity and home-charger installation will depend on the buyer’s location and circumstances.

What remains unknown before the iX4 arrives?
Several of the most important ownership questions cannot be answered from the current official specifications alone. BMW has not yet delivered the iX4, and the reviewed materials do not provide an independent road test, a measured real-world range result, a back-to-back charging session or a numeric U.S. cargo volume. Final U.S. range certification is not yet available either. Until those details emerge, treat BMW’s range and charging figures as manufacturer claims and its passenger-space description as qualitative.
A future direct comparison should use the same market, route, passenger and load assumptions wherever possible. Useful evidence would include certified range for final trims, observed highway and mixed-route consumption, charging performance across a defined battery state-of-charge window, and cargo measurements using the same convention. It should also assess rear-seat fit, visibility and the ease of loading. The current source set does not establish those comparative results, so this article does not assign an overall winner.
Nor is it possible yet to compare final purchase price, delivery dates by region or every item of trim equipment. For Tesla, confirm the live price and configuration when you shop. For BMW, revisit the local listing closer to the March 2027 launch and confirm whether the vehicle and options described are actually orderable in your market. That timing difference is part of the buying decision: someone needing a car now is not choosing between two simultaneously available products.

Which has more range, the BMW iX4 or Tesla Model Y?
BMW’s preliminary U.S. estimate for the iX4 50 xDrive is 384–428 miles using EPA procedures; it is not final EPA certification. Tesla currently lists EPA estimates from 294 to 357 miles across the Model Y configurations cited here. These figures do not establish real-world or independent-test superiority.
How fast does the BMW iX4 charge?
BMW specifies up to 400 kW DC for the U.S. iX4 50 xDrive, claims up to 184 miles added in 10 minutes under stated conditions, and gives 10–80% in 21 minutes at a suitable high-power station. These are manufacturer figures, not independent test results.
Which has more cargo space?
The available sources do not support a numeric winner. Tesla lists 74 to 76 cubic feet depending on trim, while the reviewed BMW U.S. materials describe iX4 storage without a matching numeric cargo-volume figure. Compare volumes using the same seat position and measurement convention.
Can I compare BMW’s European range figures directly with Tesla’s U.S. range?
No. BMW’s global iX4 figures are provisional WLTP figures, while Tesla’s cited figures are U.S. EPA estimates. They use different procedures and market configurations.
Does the BMW iX4 tow more than the Model Y?
BMW says the iX4 can tow up to 4,400 pounds with the optional trailer hitch. The current official information does not establish a matching current Model Y tow rating, so check the rating and equipment for the exact Tesla configuration before comparing.
What should I check before installing home charging?
Confirm connector compatibility, amperage, the home’s electrical capacity, installation requirements and compatibility with the exact vehicle. The available official information does not identify a particular charger or installer as the right choice.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The current figures make the BMW iX4 look promising on preliminary U.S. range and peak charging claims, but they do not yet prove it is the better practical EV. It is not due until March 2027, its range is not final EPA-certified, and BMW has not published a matching numeric cargo figure in the reviewed U.S. materials. Tesla’s current Model Y specifications are more concrete for a shopper buying now, but trim, route access, cargo needs and local pricing still matter. Recheck final BMW certification and availability, then compare the exact vehicles and charging routes you would actually use.
