The original BMW i8 Coupe’s BMW-published preliminary 0–60 mph figure is 4.2 seconds. For the 2019-model update, BMW announced the same preliminary time for the Coupe and 4.4 seconds for the Roadster. These are manufacturer figures, not definitive independent test results, and the body style and model update matter.
BMW i8 0–60 time: Coupe and Roadster figures
BMW’s original U.S. technical sheet lists a preliminary 0–60 mph time of 4.2 seconds for the i8 Coupe. BMW’s 2013 launch announcement had earlier said the car was expected to reach 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds; that launch wording is an expectation, not the technical sheet’s later figure. BMW Group’s 2013 U.S. announcement and its technical data sheet distinguish those claims.
For the 2019-model update, BMW announced preliminary 0–60 mph figures of 4.2 seconds for the Coupe and 4.4 seconds for the Roadster. The Roadster’s figure is not interchangeable with the Coupe’s. BMW’s update announcement identifies both versions and their figures.
| BMW-published figure | Version and interval | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 4.2 seconds | Original Coupe, 0–60 mph | Preliminary figure in BMW’s U.S. technical sheet |
| Expected under 4.5 seconds | Original i8, 0–60 mph | BMW’s 2013 launch-announcement wording |
| 4.4 seconds | Original model, 0–100 km/h (62 mph) | BMW Global figure; the endpoint is 2 mph higher than 60 mph |
| 4.2 seconds Coupe; 4.4 seconds Roadster | 2019-model update, 0–60 mph | Preliminary U.S. announcement figures |
BMW Global separately gives 4.4 seconds from 0–100 km/h, or 62 mph, for the original model. That is a different interval from 0–60 mph, so it should not be used to replace or “correct” the U.S. 0–60 figure. BMW’s Global release states the 0–100 km/h time. The available manufacturer material gives published specifications, not a definitive independent instrumented test time.

1. The i8 is a plug-in hybrid, not a fully electric car
The i8 combines a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine driving the rear wheels with an electric motor driving the front wheels. When both systems operate, that arrangement provides hybrid-specific all-wheel drive. BMW describes the plug-in hybrid system as specific to the i8. BMW’s 2013 U.S. release details the powertrain. BMW USA also answers the question “Is the BMW i8 fully electric?” directly: it is a plug-in hybrid, and it can be driven without an electric charge because it has a gasoline engine. BMW USA’s i8 FAQ
2. Its original power rating combined two very different sources
BMW’s 2013 U.S. specifications rated the original system at 362 hp and 420 lb-ft of combined torque. The gasoline engine was rated at 231 hp and the front electric motor at 131 hp. For the 2019-model update, BMW announced 369 hp for both the Coupe and Roadster; BMW’s model history summarizes later output as reaching 374 hp. These are distinct manufacturer figures for different points in the i8’s life, not one universal rating. 2013 U.S. release · 2019-model update · BMW i8 model history

BMW’s original U.S. announcement listed approximately 22 miles of electric range and an electric-mode top speed of about 75 mph. For the 2019-model update, BMW announced up to 18 miles of electric range as a preliminary figure. Those are historical manufacturer launch claims; they do not establish the remaining electric range of a used i8 today. Original-model announcement · 2019-model announcement
4. Carbon fiber and aerodynamics shaped its unusual construction
BMW describes the passenger cell as carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and the vehicle’s construction as a LifeDrive concept. Its 2013 U.S. material specifies a 0.26 drag coefficient and a DIN unladen weight of 3,285 lb. Those are BMW specifications, rather than independent measurements. 5. BMW no longer builds the i8
The i8 is a discontinued model: BMW USA says the Coupe and Roadster are no longer in production. BMW’s model-history page lists production from 2013 to 2020 and reports that 20,500 vehicles were built. BMW does not state a publication year on that history page; the figure is listed there as accessed in 2026. BMW USA’s i8 FAQ · BMW i8 model history
