Rod bearings and oil-change history
Ask for dated, itemized maintenance records, paying particular attention to oil changes and any documented rod-bearing work. A specialist should assess the car and its records; mileage alone cannot establish the condition of the bearings. The cited buying guidance raises rod bearings as a concern but does not provide a defensible failure rate or a mileage threshold that predicts failure.
VANOS warnings and oil leaks
BMW service information SI B11 10 05, issued in February 2006, states: “The VANOS high pressure line may start to leak engine oil around the flexible hose.” The documented service action applies to affected E60 M5 S85 vehicles produced up to 22 November 2005 and describes replacing the line. That production-date range does not mean every car in it is affected, nor that every later car is covered. Check the specific VIN and service history for eligibility and completion.

BMW’s S85 VANOS technical information describes a high-pressure system with a separate oil pump and diagnostic monitoring. It says the system can store faults when control deviations or adjustment times that are too long are detected. Treat VANOS warnings or stored faults as reasons for specialist diagnosis, not as a remote diagnosis based on a dashboard light alone.
Throttle actuators, oil use, and scheduled service
Ask about throttle-actuator work, oil consumption, and major scheduled services, and have the car checked for warning indications and leaks. Autocar’s 2017 used-car guide reports oil consumption of around one litre per 1,000 miles as an observation. That is not a BMW factory tolerance or a guaranteed rate for every car; investigate the seller’s account of oil use and look for supporting records.

Judge either configuration by its records, diagnostic condition, and behavior, and confirm the car’s original specification for its market.

Differential, brakes, suspension, and steering
On the inspection and test drive, pay attention to differential noise, brake wear, and suspension or steering symptoms. Have a qualified specialist investigate abnormal noise, vibration, warning indications, or handling concerns instead of assuming they are normal characteristics of an older performance car.
How to check BMW service actions and the car’s condition

- Inspect for leaks and warning indications. Ask the specialist to inspect the engine and VANOS line area and to investigate any warning lights or signs of oil loss.
- Scan the car for stored faults. Have a technician familiar with the S85 read relevant diagnostic faults, including those related to VANOS and SMG. A scan complements—not replaces—physical inspection and service-history checks.
- Assess it in operation. Test the transmission, clutch where applicable, brakes, steering, and suspension under appropriate conditions. Ask the specialist to evaluate abnormal behavior rather than relying on a short, unstructured drive.
- Get a written pre-purchase inspection. Ask for findings, outstanding maintenance, and any further diagnosis needed before deciding. Use that car-specific assessment to judge the purchase, rather than assuming a completed campaign or previous repair makes the car trouble-free.

For a prospective owner, documented service history and a specialist’s assessment are more useful than a generic promise that the car is cheap—or inevitably costly—to maintain. Is a low-priced E60 M5 a good buy?
