What was spotted?
Auto Express reported on 3 September 2026 that it had seen a heavily camouflaged 5 Series undergoing what it described as final-stage testing. The outlet identified the estate-body prototype as an electric i5 Touring and called it the first look at the Touring facelift after earlier reports about a 5 Series saloon and M5. The photographs show a camouflaged prototype; the model identification and interpretation are Auto Express’s reporting, not confirmation from BMW. Auto Express
Seeing an i5 prototype does not mean the entire facelifted Touring range will be electric. Auto Express expects a broad choice of powertrains to continue, while its UK-market outlook anticipates electric and plug-in hybrid versions and no diesel. When could the facelift arrive?
There is no confirmed BMW reveal or on-sale date. Auto Express expects the range to be revealed in early 2027 and to go on sale soon afterwards. Separately, SEMA’s 2026 spy-photo report cites preliminary information that production of the 5 Series Touring facelift could begin in July 2027, potentially making it a 2028 model. What may change on the outside?
The spy-photo interpretations do not describe the facelift in exactly the same way. Auto Express expects revised headlights, wider illuminated grille elements, a reshaped lower bumper and a stronger shark-nose appearance, plus updated rear lights, bumper and wheels. SEMA characterizes the more recent prototype as a restrained update: the G61 Touring silhouette remains, with slimmer lighting and a flatter kidney grille. What is expected inside?
Auto Express anticipates BMW’s Panoramic iDrive arrangement, with a full-width display along the base of the windscreen and a central touchscreen. Will the i5 Touring get a new battery or more range?
Reports expect battery and electric-drive updates, but they do not establish specifications. Auto Express anticipates newer, more energy-dense battery cells; SEMA expects sixth-generation eDrive technology and cylindrical cells. The cited reports do not confirm the facelift’s battery chemistry or capacity, driving range, charging rate or power output. What the current 5 Series Touring specifications tell us
BMW’s press kit describes the current sixth-generation G61 Touring, which launched in Germany, many other European countries and Japan from May 2024, with other markets following in June 2024. Its architecture supports petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and all-electric variants.
