The BMW 3 Series sedan has seven generations: E21, E30, E36, E46, E90, F30, and G20. In the United States, the sedan model-year timeline runs from the 1977 E21 through the 2026 G20. The important qualification is that BMW’s global production dates, U.S. model years, and body-style lifecycles do not always line up.
The E21 is especially easy to misunderstand: BMW called it a two-door sedan, while the E30 introduced the four-door sedan body most people associate with the 3 Series. This guide separates U.S. sedan model years from approximate global generation dates and explains the chassis codes that distinguish each generation.

These are chassis generations, not trim levels. A 330i, 328i, 340i, M340i, or other badge identifies an engine or performance configuration; it does not replace the generation code.

BMW 3 Series model-year timeline in the United States
- 1977–1983: E21 two-door sedan.
- 1984–1991: E30 four-door sedan.
- Approximately 1992–1998: E36 sedan.
- Approximately 1999–2005: E46 sedan. The broader U.S. E46 family is often listed as 1998–2006 because other body styles arrived earlier or continued later.
- 2006–2011: E90 sedan.
- 2012–2018: F30 sedan.
- 2019–2026: G20 sedan, with 2026 the latest U.S. model year documented as of August 11, 2026.
For a used-car search, the model year on the registration or title is normally the most useful starting point. For restoration, parts ordering, or decoding a car imported from another market, also verify the VIN, build date, engine, body style, and market specification.
1. E21: 1977–1983 U.S. model years
Global introduction: 1975. U.S. sedan model years: 1977–1983. Sedan code: E21.
BMW launched the E21 in 1975 as the successor to the 02 Series. North American cars arrived in 1976 as 1977 models, initially in 320i form with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. That distinction explains why the generation is often described as 1975–1983 globally but 1977–1983 in U.S. model-year coverage.

The E21 is not the four-door sedan that later defined the nameplate. BMW described its original body as a two-door sedan; a Baur Topcabriolet conversion was added later. In ordinary modern usage, many enthusiasts would call the E21 a coupe, but calling it a two-door sedan makes the historical terminology clear.
Visually, the E21 established several BMW signatures that continued for decades: a driver-oriented dashboard, kidney grille, short overhangs, the Hofmeister kink, and the familiar twin-headlamp treatment on applicable versions. Its upright proportions and relatively simple mechanical layout make it easy to distinguish from the smoother E30 that followed.
Identification tip: An early 3 Series with two doors is not automatically an E30 coupe. If its styling and production date place it in the first-generation period, it may be an E21. Check the VIN and build information before ordering parts.
2. E30: 1984–1991 U.S. sedan model years

The E30 is the generation that made the four-door 3 Series sedan a central part of the lineup. The two-door version launched first, and BMW introduced the four-door sedan in September 1983. In the United States, the sedan is generally treated as a 1984–1991 model-year car, even though the E30 family continued in other body styles beyond that sedan window.
The E30’s upright greenhouse, rectangular headlamps, sharp body lines, rear-wheel-drive layout, and relatively mechanical feel separate it from the rounded E36. It also broadened the 3 Series family with additional body styles and became the basis for the original production M3, a homologation-focused performance derivative rather than simply an ordinary sedan trim.
The body-style distinction matters when dating an E30. A later E30 convertible or another derivative may carry a model year beyond 1991 in some markets, but that does not make it a later E30 sedan. For example, a 1992 E30 convertible should not be used as evidence that the U.S. E30 sedan continued through 1992.

The generation expanded the range to include sedan, coupe, convertible, Touring wagon, Compact hatchback, and M3 variants.
U.S. timing is often presented inconsistently because sources may be referring to the global launch, the first U.S. showroom model year, or the lifecycle of the entire E36 family. The safest description for the sedan is approximately 1992–1998 in the United States, while global E36 production continued through 2000.
The E36 is also significant because the M3 sedan became a U.S.-market reality during this generation. BMW Group Classic documentation identifies a U.S.-market E36 M3 sedan sold from 1996 into 1998. That does not mean every E36 sedan is an M3, nor that the M3’s production schedule is identical to the standard 3 Series sedan’s schedule.
To identify an E36, look for the transition away from the E30’s upright shape: smoother front-end contours, more integrated bumpers, and a rounded overall body. Because E36 coupes, convertibles, Touring models, Compacts, and sedans can overlap in age, the number of doors and the body code are more reliable than appearance alone.

The E46 brought a substantial modernization of the 3 Series without abandoning the compact, rear-wheel-drive proportions associated with the nameplate. It introduced a more taut and refined exterior than the E36, along with updated chassis engineering, expanded engine choices, more equipment, and a more extensive electronic systems package.
This is the generation behind one of the most common date-range contradictions. BMW’s U.S. historical material often describes the broader E46 generation as available from 1998 to 2006. For the sedan alone, approximately 1999–2005 is the more useful model-year guide. The broader range includes body styles whose U.S. launch or production dates did not match the sedan’s schedule, particularly coupes and convertibles that continued later.
BMW reported 3,266,885 E46 units sold and described the E46 as the company’s top-selling BMW model at the time of its generation retrospective. That commercial success, combined with the generation’s recognizable styling and extensive use of inline-six engines, is why E46 references remain especially common in the used-BMW and enthusiast markets.

5. E90: 2006–2011 U.S. sedan model years
Global introduction: 2005. U.S. sedan model years: 2006–2011. Sedan code: E90.
BMW introduced the fifth-generation 3 Series in 2005, but the U.S. sedan arrived as a 2006 model. The E90 is specifically the sedan code within the wider E9x family. This is one of the most important chassis-code conventions to remember:
- E90: sedan
- E91: Touring or Sports Wagon
- E92: coupe
- E93: convertible
Calling every E9x car an E90 is therefore inaccurate. The generation may be discussed collectively as E9x, but E90 identifies the four-door sedan.

Later variants brought BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology, while the 2009 model year received a substantial styling and equipment refresh. The 2011 sedan remained part of the U.S. E90-era lineup even as BMW announced the next-generation F30 in October 2011.
Compared with the E46, the E90 generally looks larger and more technically elaborate. Its interior and electronic systems also represent a more significant step toward the modern BMW ownership experience. When buying or repairing one, do not rely on the generic phrase 3 Series E90 alone: engine, transmission, options, production date, and whether the vehicle is an E90 sedan or another E9x body all affect compatibility.
6. F30: 2012–2018 U.S. sedan model years
Global production: 2011–2019. U.S. sedan model years: 2012–2018. Sedan code: F30.
BMW unveiled the sixth-generation 3 Series Sedan in October 2011, and the U.S. car entered the market for the 2012 model year. The F30 continued the 3 Series sedan and wagon family, but BMW reorganized the product line so that the coupe and convertible derivatives became 4 Series models. The new 4 Series also included a Gran Coupé, making the naming change more than a simple trim revision.
For consumers, this can create a misleading impression that the F30 coupe or convertible is a different generation from the F30 sedan. The sedan itself is F30; the Touring is F31, and the Gran Turismo is F34. The two-door versions were assigned 4 Series designations under BMW’s newer product strategy.
The U.S. sedan lifecycle is generally 2012–2018. The 2015 model year represented the principal mid-cycle update, bringing revised lighting, equipment, and other detail changes. BMW’s updated U.S. lineup also announced the 330e plug-in hybrid, while the 2016 model year introduced the 340i in the United States.
The F30 is recognizable by its more contemporary proportions and expanded technology compared with the E90. But facelifted and non-facelifted cars can differ substantially in lighting, bumpers, equipment, and engines. Always match replacement parts and maintenance information to the exact model year and engine rather than using F30 as the only compatibility description.

7. G20: 2019–2026 U.S. model years currently documented
Global introduction: 2018. U.S. model years: 2019–2026 as of August 11, 2026. Sedan code: G20.
BMW introduced the seventh-generation 3 Series Sedan in October 2018 as a 2019 model. The U.S. launch began with the 330i and 330i xDrive. BMW followed with the M340i and M340i xDrive in spring 2019 and announced a 330e plug-in hybrid for the 2020 model year.
The G20 brought a larger body, longer wheelbase, updated suspension and powertrain technology, and a substantially modernized driver interface. The standard sedan is G20, while the Touring wagon is G21. The G80 M3 is an M-specific sedan derivative based on the seventh-generation 3 Series architecture, but G80 should not be treated as the ordinary G20 chassis code.
BMW made extensive revisions for the 2022 model year, including exterior and interior design changes, digitalization updates, equipment revisions, and the Curved Display. The 2025 model year added further updates, including BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect, revised chassis tuning, and additional exterior and interior changes. Exact equipment can vary by trim, drivetrain, option package, and market.
BMW USA lists the 2026 3 Series Sedan, so G20 is the current U.S. sedan generation as of August 11, 2026. That date matters: the correct statement is not simply that G20 runs through present without qualification, but that the G20 range is documented through the 2026 model year at the time of this guide.
How to identify your BMW 3 Series sedan
- Start with the model year and market. A U.S. model year is not always the same as the calendar year of production or the generation’s global launch.
- Confirm the body style. The same generation can have different codes for a sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible, or hatchback. This is essential for E9x, F30-family, and G20-family cars.
- Use the chassis code, not just the badge. A 328i and a 330i can belong to different generations, while the same generation can carry several engine badges.
- Check the VIN and build date. The VIN, door-jamb label, factory documentation, and parts catalog are more dependable than a visual guess.
- Verify engine and equipment before ordering parts. Suspension, brakes, electronics, filters, batteries, lighting, and interior components can vary within one chassis generation.
The chassis-code rules most likely to prevent a mistake
- E21: BMW’s original two-door sedan, not the later four-door format.
- E30: the generation that introduced the four-door 3 Series sedan.
- E90: sedan only within the E9x family; E91, E92, and E93 are different body codes.
- F30: the sixth-generation sedan; F31 is Touring and F34 is Gran Turismo. Coupe and convertible derivatives were sold as 4 Series.
- G20: the standard seventh-generation sedan; G21 is Touring and G80 is the M3 sedan derivative.
What the generation range means for maintenance and restoration
The chassis code is the best starting point for maintenance research, but it is not a complete fitment specification. A repair procedure or part may still depend on engine, transmission, drivetrain, production date, body style, and country-market equipment.
If you are working on an older car, a BMW 3 Series repair manual can be useful, but select an edition that explicitly covers the chassis code, engine, and model years of your car. An E30 workshop manual is not a substitute for E46 service information, and a manual covering an F30 does not automatically explain the electronics or systems of a G20. BMW’s digital owner manuals are better suited to vehicle operation and factory equipment information; they are not necessarily a substitute for a detailed workshop manual.
The same caution applies to diagnostic tools. Older generations and newer electronically networked cars do not necessarily use identical diagnostic requirements, so an OBD-II scanner should be checked for BMW-system compatibility and the specific generation before purchase. Fitment products such as floor mats, filters, suspension parts, batteries, and wiper blades must likewise be selected by chassis, body style, and sometimes production date.
Why the dates differ between sources
There are several legitimate reasons a source may show a different range:
- Global production versus U.S. model year: A car introduced late in a calendar year may be sold in the United States as the following model year.
- Sedan versus complete generation: A sedan may end before a coupe, convertible, wagon, or other derivative.
- Launch timing versus full availability: A new generation may debut with one engine or body style and add others months later.
- Imported and leftover inventory: A vehicle built in one period may be titled or sold in another model year, especially across market transitions.
- Different terminology: BMW’s historical use of sedan for the E21’s two-door body does not match how most modern buyers use the word sedan.
The E36 and E46 are the clearest examples. The E36 was built globally through 2000 even though the practical U.S. sedan range ends around 1998. The broader U.S. E46 family is frequently described as 1998–2006, while the sedan-only range is more usefully described as approximately 1999–2005.
