What makes the 135i worth considering?
BMW introduced the 128i and 135i coupes to the U.S. market for the 2008 model year. The 135i is the performance-oriented version, appealing to drivers who want a compact, rear-wheel-drive coupe. BMW’s launch announcement describes the original new-car offering, not coverage or benefits that carry over to a used car: BMW’s 2007 1 Series Coupe announcement.
Whether one is a good buy today depends more on the exact example than on the badge. The available historical sources do not establish current asking prices, average repair bills, failure rates, or a universal reliability winner between the two engines. Compare real cars using their records and inspection findings, rather than assuming that every 135i is trouble-prone—or trouble-free.
Which engine and transmission does a 135i have?
BMW technical training material documents a change from the N54 to the N55 in E82/E88 135i models in the 2011 model-year update. Both are 2,979 cc inline-six engines, but a listing’s year alone should not substitute for identifying the specific car. Market, build date, body style, and equipment can affect the configuration. The same training material describes a six-speed manual as standard and a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) as an automatic option for the configurations it covers. Do not assume every market or model year follows that specification; verify the transmission on the car you are considering.
What should you check before buying?
Start with the car’s identity and paperwork
Get the VIN and establish the model year, build date, coupe body style, engine, transmission, market, and modification history. Ask for invoices and campaign-completion records, not just a verbal account of maintenance. These details matter because BMW’s engine transition and service information distinguish configurations and body styles.

Investigate the historical high-pressure fuel-pump action
In October 2010, BMW announced a voluntary action covering some model-year 2008–2010 135i vehicles among a broader group. BMW described possible high-pressure fuel-pump failure symptoms including extended cranking and a Service Engine Soon light; some cases could also involve reduced performance and an Engine Malfunction warning. Depending on service history, the action could involve a pump replacement and/or software update. Ask for records and investigate any symptoms, but do not infer that a specific car was affected—or repaired—from the model year alone. BMW’s announcement said approximately 130,000 vehicles across the affected model group were potentially affected and about 40,000 were expected to require a new pump; these were not 135i-only counts. Details are in BMW’s 2010 announcement.
Check open recalls by VIN
Use BMW USA’s recall lookup and ask a BMW Center or seller for completion documentation. BMW says recall repairs are free at an authorized BMW Center. A historical campaign range is not proof that a particular VIN is affected or that work remains open.

Use coolant-pump information narrowly
BMW service bulletin SIB 01 13 21, dated May 5, 2021, concerns a class-action settlement involving electric engine coolant pumps used with N54/N54T/N55 engines. Its application table lists E88 135i convertibles—N54 for 2008–2010 and N55 for 2011–2013—and describes VIN-specific eligibility. That convertible table does not establish eligibility for an E82 coupe or prove that any benefit is currently available. For a coverage claim, rely on VIN-specific BMW records. Treat non-U.S. recall information as a prompt, not a verdict
ADAC’s German-market E82/E88 catalog lists historical actions including a possible electrical power-distribution connector issue and driveshaft flex-disc breakage, as well as the twin-turbo fuel-pump/software action. Its entries concern portions of the relevant population, not every 135i, and do not establish the status of a U.S.-market VIN. Request records and have a specialist inspect relevant areas where appropriate; confirm applicable campaigns with BMW for the car’s market. See ADAC’s E82/E88 catalog.

How to compare two 135i examples
When choosing between cars, weigh the evidence for each one rather than treating N54 or N55 as a guarantee of lower ownership risk.

So, should you buy a used BMW 135i?
Consider one if you want a compact performance coupe and find a car whose configuration is verified, records are credible, open recalls are resolved, and inspection results make sense to you. Walk away or renegotiate if the seller cannot substantiate key claims, significant symptoms remain unexplained, or the inspection reveals problems outside your budget. The deciding factor is the specific car’s evidence—not a general claim that all 135is are either great buys or bad ones.
