There is no objective list of the 14 most underrated cars: the label depends on which market, rivals and buyers you have in mind. Here, “the decade” means cars from the 2010s, with a US-market emphasis where the cited model-year evidence supports it. The list includes a few UK-market editorial picks, identified as such; their prices and comparisons should not be read as US-market guidance.

These cars earned less attention than their strengths might suggest, often because of a compromise, a stronger-known rival or a less fashionable badge. That does not make every one a bargain, dependable choice or fit for every driver. Check a specific car’s year, trim, history and condition before treating an appealing reputation as a buying case.

What makes a car underrated?

“Underrated” is an editorial judgment, not a measurable vehicle quality. Auto Express says buyers may overlook a car in favor of newer technology or a better-known badge, while a flaw such as divisive styling, weak infotainment or a small boot can overshadow other strengths. Jalopnik notes that drawbacks can also reduce demand and, over time, contribute to depreciation. Those explanations help frame the picks; they do not prove that every car below is cheap or reliable.

The models span different jobs—from family crossovers and practical hatchbacks to a pickup and an electric performance saloon—so there is no fair single ranking by value. Consider each against rivals in its own class and according to the work you need it to do.

14 cars that deserve a closer look

1. Mazda 3 (2014–2018 examples)

Edmunds’ used-car recommendations, reported by the Associated Press in 2024, include 2014–2018 Mazda 3 models as small-car options. The car is available as a sedan or hatchback, with different engine and transmission choices. Auto Express praises the fourth-generation Mazda 3’s design, gearbox and interior, but says its engines can feel underpowered against class leaders. That trade-off matters: it may appeal to someone who values cabin and driving character more than outright pace, but verify the exact generation, powertrain and trim before comparing cars.

2. Honda CR-V (2012–2016 examples)

The AP’s 2024 report on Edmunds recommendations highlights 2012–2016 CR-V examples for their space and practicality, with all-wheel drive available and updates across the range. The recommendation was part of an under-$15,000 used-car set at that time; it is a dated price frame, not a current valuation. A CR-V’s usefulness depends on the specific vehicle’s equipment and condition, so inspect the individual example rather than relying on the model’s reputation.

3. Honda Accord (2013–2017 examples)

Edmunds’ US-focused recommendations, reported by AP in 2024, cover 2013–2017 Accord models. Four-cylinder and V6 engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and a 2014 hybrid option were available within the relevant model years. That breadth gives shoppers more than one kind of Accord to consider, but also makes exact year and powertrain identification essential when comparing equipment or asking prices. The under-$15,000 context belongs to the 2024 recommendations, not today’s market.

  • 1/24 Scale Diecast Model Car

  • Window box measures: 9.75"L x 4.5"W x 4"H

4. Toyota Highlander (2014–2019 examples)

The Highlander appears in the AP/Edmunds 2024 used-car recommendations for 2014–2019 models. It offers three rows, and engine choices vary by year and configuration. Edmunds’ report pointed shoppers toward 2017–2019 changes, but equipment should be checked by trim and model year; a three-row layout alone does not tell you which features a particular vehicle has. The report’s under-$15,000 frame was specific to its 2024 recommendations.

5. Toyota Tacoma (2005–2015 examples)

Although some of the cited Tacoma examples predate the 2010s, the AP’s 2024 report on Edmunds recommendations includes 2005–2015 trucks. It notes that Tacoma values tend to hold strongly and says important safety features became standard from 2009, a detail to confirm against the exact year, cab and configuration. Strong value retention can mean less depreciation for an owner, but it can also make a used example cost more; condition and equipment still matter.

6. Ford Focus ST (third-generation US model)

Jalopnik describes the US-market third-generation Focus ST as a hot hatch with a turbocharged four-cylinder, front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual. It reports 252 horsepower and cites a Kelley Blue Book price estimate for a 2015 model. Treat both details as tied to the specific model and estimate discussed, not as specifications or current pricing for every Focus ST. Its appeal is the compact, performance-oriented package; its manual transmission and front-drive layout may not suit every buyer.

  • Die-cast metal body. Opening doors and engine compartment.

  • Mounted on plastic stand.

7. Cadillac XTS

Jalopnik presents the XTS as a traditional luxury sedan that can be overshadowed by more attention-grabbing cars in Cadillac’s lineup. That makes it an interesting alternative for someone who wants a large, conventional sedan rather than a conspicuous performance model. Jalopnik’s roughly $10,000 used-price example was framed in 2025 and should not be treated as a current market quote. The evidence here does not establish a comparative reliability advantage.

8. Nissan Titan XD

Jalopnik argues that the Titan XD received comparatively limited development relative to larger pickup competitors, which may help explain why it attracts less attention. Jalopnik also reported, citing CarEdge, that the truck retained 36% of its original purchase price after five years. That residual-value figure is source- and methodology-dependent, and should not be generalized to every year or individual truck. Check the exact configuration and compare it with the towing, payload and cabin needs that matter to you.

9. Volkswagen Touareg

Jalopnik describes the Touareg as sharing platform roots with the Audi Q7, with all-wheel drive, seating for five and up to 64 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Those are useful attributes for a buyer considering a capable, five-seat SUV. Jalopnik’s 2025 used-price example and its positive reliability characterization are not a current price guide or a comparative reliability dataset. Confirm capacity and equipment for the year and trim you are considering, and assess the vehicle’s own condition.

  • Scaled replicas of cars and trucks

10. Fiat 124 Spider

The rear-wheel-drive 124 Spider offers an open-top alternative to more common roadsters, with a turbocharged engine and manual or automatic transmission. Jalopnik identifies 2020 as its final model year and reported in 2025 that high trims could be found below $20,000 at the time. That price is a dated snapshot, not a present-day guarantee. Choose based on the specific transmission, trim and condition; the car’s roadster format makes it a specialized choice rather than a general-purpose replacement for a family car.

11. Alfa Romeo Giulia (UK editorial perspective)

Auto Express says UK buyers did not choose the Giulia as often as German compact executive saloons, despite its looks and driving appeal. Its coverage also flags dated infotainment and discusses the outgoing model’s powertrain context. This makes the Giulia an example of a car whose appeal can be obscured by stronger-established rivals and a technology compromise. Auto Express’s price figures are UK-market snapshots, not US valuations; no general reliability conclusion follows from the editorial comparison.

12. Cupra Leon (UK editorial perspective)

Auto Express describes the Cupra Leon as a hot hatch that flies under the radar beside the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The relevant comparison is a UK-market editorial one, not a claim that every Leon is a better buy or that its specifications transfer to other markets. If considering one, match the exact year and trim against the rival you would otherwise buy; the source does not establish a current price or reliability advantage.

13. Skoda Scala (UK editorial perspective)

Auto Express highlights the Scala’s room, comfort, equipment and value, with cabin space and boot capacity among its strengths. Those qualities make it a practical hatchback candidate for buyers who prioritize everyday usability over a premium badge. The price and equipment discussion is UK-specific and time-sensitive, so confirm local-market specifications and current asking prices before comparing it with alternatives.

14. Suzuki Swift (UK fleet example)

Auto Express reported that its long-term fleet Swift averaged 56.8 mpg. That is one publication’s fleet result, accessed in 2026, not a standardized result or a promise for every model year, trim, route or driver. Auto Express’s example is useful as a real-world reference point, but assess the exact car and your likely use rather than applying the number universally.

How to use this list when shopping

Start with the vehicle’s job, then compare within that category. A small hatchback, three-row SUV, roadster, pickup and performance saloon cannot be ranked fairly on one value scale. Also separate a model’s interesting strengths from evidence about the specific used car in front of you: the sources here do not provide a uniform dataset for reliability, maintenance costs or current prices across all 14.

  • Confirm the model year, trim, body style, engine and transmission; names can cover materially different configurations.
  • Treat any price as a dated, market-specific example. The cited Jalopnik figures were framed in 2025, the AP/Edmunds recommendations in 2024, and Auto Express’s pound-denominated list is UK-specific.
  • Compare a car with relevant class rivals and decide which compromise you can live with—such as less power, older infotainment or a less familiar badge.
  • For a used purchase, obtain a vehicle history report and inspect the car for neglect or abuse, as AP/Edmunds advises.
