The “$140 million a year” headline is outdated. Black Sesame’s roughly $140 million figure referred to a 2022 net loss, not proven annual cash burn. The latest audited results, for 2025, show a larger automotive-chip business but continued heavy losses: revenue reached RMB822.3 million, operating cash flow was negative RMB985.4 million, and net loss attributable to shareholders was RMB1.4247 billion.
Black Sesame is now a listed Chinese automotive-computing company, not a general-purpose Nvidia substitute. Its progress is real—products are shipping, revenue is growing and gross margins have improved—but it has not yet demonstrated that vehicle-program growth can cover its enormous research and development bill.

The company describes its Huashan family as high-computing-power automotive SoCs and its Wudang family as cross-domain SoCs. Company materials and annual-report disclosures also reference the C1200 family and the higher-performance A2000 platform under development. Product names and capabilities can change by generation, so historical claims about a specific chip should not be treated as a current product ranking.

In 2023 reporting based on the company’s listing materials, the A1000 Pro was described as delivering more than 160 TOPS, with a higher-performance version in development. TOPS is only a throughput measure: vehicle buyers also evaluate power consumption, thermal design, safety certification, software, price, production yield and long-term supply.
Is Black Sesame really an Nvidia rival?
Only in a narrow, automotive sense. Black Sesame is a Chinese specialist competing for selected vehicle-compute programs. Nvidia is a global accelerated-computing company whose businesses include data-center GPUs, networking, software ecosystems and automotive products. The two companies are not comparable in scale, software adoption, product breadth or balance-sheet strength.
A more accurate description is a Chinese automotive-chip alternative to Nvidia, Qualcomm, Mobileye and other foreign suppliers. That positioning matters in China, where automakers want more local control over semiconductor supply and where export controls and geopolitical risk have made foreign dependencies more consequential. Chinese design ownership, however, does not mean a fully domestic manufacturing chain.

What the $140 million figure actually meant
The original figure came from coverage of Black Sesame’s 2023 Hong Kong listing prospectus. The company reported 2022 revenue of RMB165.4 million, a net loss of approximately RMB1 billion—about $140 million at the exchange rate used in that coverage—and RMB764.1 million of research and development expense. A net loss is an accounting result; it is not automatically the amount of cash consumed during the year.

- Net loss: accounting loss after operating costs, finance items, taxes and other adjustments.
- Operating loss: loss from the core business before certain non-operating effects.
- Operating cash burn: cash used by day-to-day operations.
- R&D expense: a major cost, but not a synonym for cash burn.
- Adjusted net loss: a company-defined non-IFRS measure that may exclude items such as share-based compensation.
For 2025, the audited cash measure is clear: Black Sesame used RMB985.4 million in operating activities. It also recorded a RMB1.4483 billion operating loss, RMB1.4174 billion of R&D expense and a RMB1.4247 billion net loss. At a simple RMB7.2-per-dollar conversion, those are roughly $136 million of operating cash use and $198 million of net loss, but the reported figures are best read in RMB because exchange rates vary.
Revenue has grown sharply, but profitability has not arrived
| Fiscal year | Revenue | Reported net result | Operating cash flow |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | RMB165.4 million | Approximately RMB1 billion loss | Not stated in the cited 2023 coverage |
| 2023 | RMB312.4 million | Reported profit affected by financial-instrument accounting | RMB1.190 billion used |
| 2024 | RMB474.3 million | RMB313.3 million reported profit; adjusted net loss RMB1.3043 billion | RMB1.190 billion used |
| 2025 | RMB822.3 million | RMB1.4247 billion loss | RMB985.4 million used |
Revenue rose nearly fivefold from 2022 to 2025. That is meaningful commercial progress, but the cost base remains much larger than gross profit. In 2025, gross profit was RMB337.1 million against RMB1.4174 billion of R&D expense and a RMB1.4483 billion operating loss.
Why the 2024 “profit” was misleading
Black Sesame reported RMB313.3 million of profit attributable to shareholders in 2024, yet its adjusted net loss was RMB1.3043 billion. The difference was dominated by a RMB2.0466 billion fair-value gain on financial instruments issued to investors. That non-cash accounting movement can produce a reported profit without showing that chip sales cover engineering and operating costs.
For this company, operating loss, adjusted net loss and operating cash flow are more informative indicators of the underlying business than the headline IFRS profit alone.
Gross margins are improving
Overall gross margin increased from 24.7% in 2023 to 41.1% in 2024. Autonomous-driving products and solutions generated RMB438.0 million in 2024, up 58.5% from 2023, with a 37.4% gross margin. Intelligent-imaging solutions generated RMB36.3 million at an 85.4% margin.
The 2024 annual report attributed the improvement partly to customized algorithms integrated into SoC-based solutions, which can require fewer hardware components, and to a larger share of software and algorithm licensing in intelligent imaging. Higher gross margin is encouraging, but it does not establish profitability while annual R&D remains above RMB1.4 billion.
Who uses Black Sesame’s technology?
Company disclosures and reporting have referenced work with BYD, Dongfeng, Geely, FAW Group, JAC, ECARX, Baidu, Bosch, ZF and Marelli. The 2024 annual report specifically cited continued sales to domestic automakers including BYD, Dongfeng and Geely, as well as increased use in mass-produced vehicle models, commercial vehicles and vehicle–road–cloud projects.

Supply-chain exposure remains a strategic risk
Black Sesame designs chips; it does not thereby control the factories, equipment, intellectual property or advanced manufacturing capacity needed to produce them. Prospectus-era disclosures identified foundry access, third-party IP, international trade policy, sanctions and export controls as risks. The 2023 reporting specifically identified TSMC as a manufacturer of Black Sesame SoCs.
The defensible conclusion is exposure, not proof that production has been cut off. A restriction, price increase or loss of access at a foundry—or the unavailability of a restricted IP block—could delay products or force expensive redesigns. “Chinese alternative” and “fully domestic” are therefore not interchangeable descriptions.

At December 31, 2025, Black Sesame reported RMB1.4468 billion in cash and cash equivalents, or RMB1.5307 billion including current financial assets measured at fair value through profit or loss. Borrowings and lease liabilities totaled RMB778.6 million. Against that, 2025 operating cash use was RMB985.4 million.
Dividing year-end liquid resources by one year of cash use gives a rough comparison of about 1.55 years, not a formal runway forecast. Burn can change, some financial assets may not be unrestricted operating cash, debt must be serviced, and financing proceeds affected the year-end balance. Management said available funding and financing were expected to support the next twelve months from December 31, 2025, while also stating that continued operations depend on generating cash and obtaining additional equity or debt financing.

Growth has depended on external financing
In 2025, financing activities generated RMB1.1987 billion. This included RMB1.1421 billion, net of issuance costs, from an ordinary-share placing and RMB540 million of new borrowings, partly offset by RMB480 million of repayments.
That funding supports product development and expansion, but it creates a trade-off for shareholders: additional equity can dilute ownership, while debt adds repayment obligations before the core business is profitable.
What would prove the business model?
- More revenue from repeat, high-volume vehicle production rather than development projects.
- Evidence of rising vehicle shipments across several OEM programs, not only customer announcements.
- Gross-margin durability as chip prices face competition and customers demand customization.
- R&D efficiency: new programs reaching certification and production without continuously escalating engineering costs.
- Lower operating cash burn achieved through operating leverage rather than temporary working-capital movements.
- Resilient foundry and IP access despite export-control and geopolitical changes.
Key failure modes
- A major customer delays or cancels a vehicle program.
- A design win produces samples but never reaches mass production.
- Production volumes remain concentrated in low-volume commercial or specialty vehicles.
- Chinese competitors pressure average selling prices.
- Automakers develop more hardware and software internally.
- Certification, safety or software-integration work delays launches.
- Government grants or tax incentives decline.
- New share issues dilute existing investors while debt service consumes cash.
- Robotics and other expansion projects increase spending before producing material revenue.
Bottom line: a real automotive supplier, not yet a self-funding one
Black Sesame has outgrown the company described by the 2023 “$140 million” headline. Revenue reached RMB822.3 million in 2025, products are associated with production programs, margins improved and the company is publicly listed. But the central financial issue remains: operating cash use was RMB985.4 million and net loss was RMB1.4247 billion in the latest audited year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe company is best viewed as a listed Chinese automotive-SoC specialist with genuine commercialization progress and substantial financing risk. Its strategic value depends on helping automakers localize vehicle compute; its investment case depends on turning that growth into durable operating leverage before external funding becomes the limiting factor.
